Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of Problems in Illustration of the Principles of Theoretical Mechanics In regard to the mode in which the author of this treatise has completed the task which he has proposed to himself, he feels every degree of diifidence, and would willingly that it had been undertaken by an abler hand. In apology for the imperfections, of which either he is himself aware or which may have eluded his observation, he can plead only the fact of engrossing occupa tions, or of perhaps insufficient preparation for a work requiring greater research than was originally contemplated. Book The Theory and Practice of Mechanics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Mechanics Classic Reprint written by S. E. Slocum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Mechanics A course in theoretical mechanics often lacks the strength and vitality resulting from practical applications, whereas a course in applied mechanics is likely to be so technical and limited in its range as to obscure the meaning and s00pe of the fundamental principles involved. By properly combining theory and practice the efficiency of instruction is greatly increased, and mechanics also becomes a powerful instrument for coordinating mathematics and physics with technology. In this text the aim is to present the fundamental principles of mechanics in such a way as to emphasize their actual significance and relationship, and at the same time make them a matter of intelligent interest to the average student of junior grade in col leges and universities, and in technical and engineering schools. In each article the explanation is given a body by direct applica tion to some practical problem within the range of the student's experience or understanding. Download or read book Mathematical Methods of Classical Mechanics written by V.I. Arnol'd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constructs the mathematical apparatus of classical mechanics from the beginning, examining basic problems in dynamics like the theory of oscillations and the Hamiltonian formalism. The author emphasizes geometrical considerations and includes phase spaces and flows, vector fields, and Lie groups. Discussion includes qualitative methods of the theory of dynamical systems and of asymptotic methods like averaging and adiabatic invariance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technical Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics The following paragraph is an adaptation from the preface of the first edition of this work, published ten years ago; it applies to the present edition. This book might be described fairly as a theoretical mechanics for students of engineering. It is not comparable to books commonly called Theoretical Mechanics, generally intended for students of mathematics or physics; nor to books commonly titled Applied Mechanics which generally include a treat ment of strength of materials, hydraulics, etc., for students of engineering. The title Technical Mechanics seems fairly appropriate for this book; and inasmuch as it is not otherwise used in this country, it was so adopted. On the theoretical side, practically each subject discussed herein has a direct bearing on some engineering problem.' The applications were selected and presented for the purpose of illustrating a principle of mechanics and for training students in the use of such principles, not to furnish information, except incidentally, about the structure, machine, or what not to which the application was made. Ten years use of the book asa text in the author's classes has suggested many changes; and in recent years the need of a new collection of problems has become urgent. Accordingly, a revision was undertaken, and the effort has resulted in a practically rewritten book. Indeed the only portion of the former edition used again with little or no change is the present Appendix A. Though containing fewer pages than the old book, the new one because of its (nearly one-third) larger printed page contains more material than the old. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mathematical Principles of Mechanical Philosophy: And Their Application to Elementary Mechanics and Architecture, but Chiefly to the Theory of Universal Universal Gravitation A leading object that I have had in view in pre paring the present Treatise has been to gather into one uniform system the principles of mechanical science, beginning with the most elementary and ascending to the most general. In attempting to accomplish this I have collected the fundamental principles into sepa rate Chapters, and placed after them Chapters of ap plication of these principles to. The demonstration of others of a second class, and have then added collections of problems, and, in some instances, hints to guide to their solution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles Elementary Mechanics The demonstration of the formula for centrifugal force may appear to be unnecessarily lengthy, but I trust that the student will gain a clearer conception of the mode of action of the forces, and be better satisfied with the logic of the demonstration, by following the proof here given, than by certain of the shorter methods. The demonstra tion by some of the latter methods is defective, although the same result is reached by them.
