This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to great spirit of all, I have made this tiny success without anyone's help. When I am not on this earth, I will rest in peace, since I would know that I have finished what I started years ago and succeeded in doing so against all odds. This is the story of life that has come to be mine to come alive in my writings. I hope others would also find an opportunity to achieve something they dreamed to do and succeed in doing so. Lastly, I hope the young generation would engage in reading some poetry, now and then, and to appreciate poetry as an important part of human culture which remains as an everlasting mirror, standing in front of us, reflecting our actions on this earth, just like a movie with a cast of people whereas in the case of poetry, words replace the cast of people.

Book Refusing Heaven

  • Author : Jack Gilbert
  • Publisher : Knopf
  • Release : 2009-04-02
  • ISBN : 0307543943
  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book Refusing Heaven written by Jack Gilbert and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2009-04-02 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a decade after Jack Gilbert’s The Great Fires, this highly anticipated new collection shows the continued development of a poet who has remained fierce in his avoidance of the beaten path. In Refusing Heaven, Gilbert writes compellingly about the commingled passion, loneliness, and sometimes surprising happiness of a life spent in luminous understanding of his own blessings and shortcomings: “The days and nights wasted . . . Long hot afternoons / watching ants while the cicadas railed / in the Chinese elm about the brevity of life.” Time slows down in these poems, as Gilbert creates an aura of curiosity and wonder at the fact of existence itself. Despite powerful intermittent griefs–over the women he has parted from or the one lost to cancer (an experience he captures with intimate precision)–Gilbert’s choice in this volume is to “refuse heaven.” He prefers this life, with its struggle and alienation and delight, to any paradise. His work is both a rebellious assertion of the call to clarity and a profound affirmation of the world in all its aspects. It braces the reader in its humanity and heart.

Book Good Poems

    Book Details:
  • Author : Various
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2003-08-26
  • ISBN : 1101174978
  • Pages : 504 pages

Download or read book Good Poems written by Various and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2003-08-26 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day people tune in to The Writer's Almanac on public radio and hear Garrison Keillor read them a poem. And here, for the first time, is an anthology of poems from the show, chosen by the narrator for their wit, their frankness, their passion, their "utter clarity in the face of everything else a person has to deal with at 7 a.m." The title Good Poems comes from common literary parlance. For writers, it's enough to refer to somebody having written a good poem. Somebody else can worry about greatness. Mary Oliver's "Wild Geese" is a good poem, and so is James Wright's "A Blessing." Regular people love those poems. People read them aloud at weddings, people send them by e-mail. Good Poems includes poems about lovers, children, failure, everyday life, death, and transcendance. It features the work of classic poets, such as Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, and Robert Frost, as well as the work of contemporary greats such as Howard Nemerov, Charles Bukowski, Donald Hall, Billy Collins, Robert Bly, and Sharon Olds. It's a book of poems for anybody who loves poetry whether they know it or not.

Book There Are More Beautiful Things Than Beyonce

Download or read book There Are More Beautiful Things Than Beyonce written by Morgan Parker and published by Tin House Books. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A TIME Magazine Best Paperback of 2017 One of Oprah Magazine's "Ten Best Books of 2017" "This singular poetry collection is a dynamic meditation on the experience of, and societal narratives surrounding, contemporary black womanhood. . . . These exquisite poems defy categorization." —The New Yorker The only thing more beautiful than Beyoncé is God, and God is a black woman sipping rosé and drawing a lavender bath, texting her mom, belly-laughing in the therapist’s office, feeling unloved, being on display, daring to survive. Morgan Parker stands at the intersections of vulnerability and performance, of desire and disgust, of tragedy and excellence. Unrelentingly feminist, tender, ruthless, and sequined, these poems are an altar to the complexities of black American womanhood in an age of non-indictments and deja vu, and a time of wars over bodies and power. These poems celebrate and mourn. They are a chorus chanting: You’re gonna give us the love we need.

Book Poetry with Punch

  • ISBN : 1616630523
  • Pages : 256 pages

Book excerpt: There is life, not death, in my scabbard. Helen Murray's Poetry with Punch: For the Urgency of the Hour is anything but standard Christian poetry. These compelling poems truly pack a punch, offering a coltish perspective with instructional undertones. Expect sweet meditations? Try again. Do you anticipate a counter perspective? You're getting warmer. Will your 'gentle Jesus meek and mild' expectation be satisfied? Go home. Do you mean these are fighting words? You had better believe it. Through her poetry, Murray seeks to combat the way worldly thinking has overtaken Christian communities. Over the years, she's observed how churches often do not reflect the glory of God in power and truth. Poetry with a Punch is meant to bring Christians back to reality, back to the exquisite culture which clearly distinguishes people of faith from those of the gentile world. These poems have application in every field of Christian endeavour and are well suited for education, counseling, the home group, the sermon, or the coffee table. Prepare to rethink your faith, discover a playful provocation (in the best sense), and chuckle at a slice of incisive raillery. Poetry with Punch will press you toward the exit door of your dangerous comfort zone and advance you into an extraordinary life, where truth establishes freedom and people, through the exuberant wisdom of the Spirit of Truth, exceed all limitations.

Book Mortality s Muse

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inevitability of death—that of others and our own—is surely among our greatest anxieties. Mortality’s Muse: The Fine Art of Dying explores how art, mainly literary art, addresses that troubling reality. While religion and philosophy offer important consolations for life’s end, art responds in ways that are perhaps more complete and certainly more deeply human. Among subjects treated: the ars moriendi or “art of dying” tradition; the contrast between past and more recent cultural values; the religious consolation’s value but shortcoming for some people; the role of art in offering a secular consolation; dying as a performing art; the philosophic ideal of good death; the lively appeal of carpe diem or living for the present moment; the elegiac sense of life; and the two opposite parts Mortality’s Muse has played in dealing with war, the most senseless and unnecessary cause of death. The idea of an aesthetic sense of life forms the basis of these discussions. Human beings are makers in the largest sense of the word, and art represents everything they make—civilization itself with all its greatness and failings. Our civilization may ultimately be nothing but an evanescent blip in the cosmos. Even so, the creation of beauty, meaning, and purpose from disorder and suffering defines us as human beings. In the words of Robinson Jeffers, even if monuments eventually crumble and all art perish, yet for thousands of years carved stones have stood and “pained thoughts found the honey of peace in old poems.”

Book Human Hours

  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book Human Hours written by Catherine Barnett and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Believer Book Award The triumphant follow-up collection to The Game of Boxes, winner of the James Laughlin Award Catherine Barnett’s tragicomic third collection, Human Hours, shuttles between a Whitmanian embrace of others and a kind of rapacious solitude. Barnett speaks from the middle of hope and confusion, carrying philosophy into the everyday. Watching a son become a young man, a father become a restless beloved shell, and a country betray its democratic ideals, the speakers try to make sense of such departures. Four lyric essays investigate the essential urge and appeal of questions that are “accursed,” that are limited—and unanswered—by answers. What are we to do with the endangered human hours that remain to us? Across the leaps and swerves of this collection, the fevered mind tries to slow—or at least measure—time with quiet bravura: by counting a lover’s breaths; by remembering a father’s space-age watch; by envisioning the apocalyptic future while bedding down on a hard, cold floor, head resting on a dictionary. Human Hours pulses with the absurd, with humor that accompanies the precariousness of the human condition.

Book Bathroom Poetry

Download or read book Bathroom Poetry written by T.A. Dieringer and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not about poetry; it is simply a book to read while one relieves him or herself in the latrine, bathroom, head, or toilet, while taking a crap, dropping a stool, pinching a loaf, dropping the kids off at the lake, I could go on, but I am sure you get the picture. There are quotes from the stalls of many bathroom walls found all over the world. Now since I am male, I did not have a chance to visit many, if any, female bathrooms (sorry, ladies), so I do not have many quotes from said places. Some subject material may be offensive. Please read with cautious trepidation. Some are personal quotes, things that pop into my brain at any given moment. Sometimes these thoughts are followed by bouts of laughter that cause people that are standing near me to think that I am strange. They usually react by walking away fast. But I decided to add these thoughts to Bathroom Poetry anyways. Some quotes are famous and semifamous quotes. Some are unknown author quotes. Many of the quotes were found on the stalls of bathrooms from all over the globe. I have collected many quotes from memory during my travels around the world while serving twenty-one years in the United States Navy. This book is meant for entertainment value only. Any words of wisdom gleaned while reading this book is pure shit-house luck.
