Book Anna Richards Brewster American Impressionist

Download or read book Anna Richards Brewster American Impressionist written by Anna Richards Brewster and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anna Richards Brewster, American Impressionist is the first in-depth study of an artist whose name is not well-known today but who was one of the most successful women artists of her time. This beautifully illustrated book, catalog to the exhibition of the same name, provides a fascinating look at the turn-of-the-twentieth-century art world as experienced by a woman artist. Anna Richards Brewster (1870-1952) began painting at age ten, studied with William Merritt Chase and John LaFarge, and trained at Acadmie Julian in Paris. She was a prolific painter of landscapes, portraits, and illustrations who showed her work regularly until the 1930s. In this volume, curator Judith Kafka Maxwell revives Brewster's work while exploring the contradictions common to women like her--those whose professional ambitions were neither supported nor encouraged by institutions or patrons. An introduction by Wanda M. Corn situates the artist in her social and cultural milieu, and essays by art historian Leigh Culver and American historian Kirsten Swinth explore the works themselves, the artist's education, and the post-Civil War rise of women artists. The result is a rich history of an artist and her time that makes vivid the obstacles faced by female artists in the early twentieth century.

Book excerpt: This catalogue of the Georgia Museum of Art's permanent collection is both a tribute to Alfred Heber Holbrook, the museum's founder, and a record of his legacy, which began in 1945 when he gave one hundred works of American art to the people of Georgia through its flagship university. These works formed the foundation of the museum's current collection of more than 8,000 art objects. Published to coincide with the museum's grand reopening in January 2011 after a 30,000-square-foot expansion, this catalogue features one hundred significant American paintings that, for the first time, will be on continual display in the building's new permanent-collection galleries. Book The Artists of the World Bio bibliographical Index by Profession

Download or read book The Artists of the World Bio bibliographical Index by Profession written by and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2002 with total page 992 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bio-bibliographical Index by Profession is a unique index of visual artists from all over the world and throughout all ages. It provides the user with access to the Allgemeines Ku nstlerlexikon (AKL), which, on completion, will contain more than 500,000 biographies on artists and provide an overview of artistic activity. Several hundred artistic professions are included here, from architects to etchers, from sculptors to body-arts. The basis for the biographical entries are over 200 major international encyclopedia of artists with a total of some 500 volumes, whose data, including source references, are indexed by the Bio-bibliographical Index by Profession in a clearly structured manner, providing the user with an overview and easy access. The data has been supplemented with material from the published volumes of AKL, Thieme-Becker and Vollmer, and with additional details researched by the editorial staff. The index thus represents a biographical reference work in its own right. The index is structured by artistic professional groups (in English), within professional groups by country and within countries, in chronological order. The Bio-bibliographical Index by Profession thus also provides a chronological overview of the history of artists and the development of various art forms in individual countries. Providing up-to-date information, the short entries comprise the artist's name (including name variants and pseudonyms), fields of artistic activity, biographical dates, places of birth and death (if not known: place and date first and/or last mentioned), country classification and at least one bibliographicalsource reference. For each professional title listed in English, the five-language "Glossary of Occupations" provides German, French, Italian and Spanish equivalents. User information, the "Overview of Professions and their Classification" and the "Alphabetical List of Countries" are also provided in five languages, making this work a genuine treasure trove of information to be used all around the globe.
