Book excerpt: The Navy is studying the nature of the antiborer constituents of naturally marine-borer-resistant woods to determine if these natural products could be developed into new, more effective, nonpolluting wood protectants against these borers; emphasis is placed on those compounds effective against limnorians. In order to study the effect of these natural wood extractives on the physiology of limnorians under controlled laboratory conditions, a laboratory culture of Limnoria tripunctata has been established using a closed recirculating aquarium system. The usual invertebrate closed-aquarium culture techniques have been modified to fit our needs. This includes the redesign of the biological filter bed and its location outside each aquarium. A brief biology of the limnorians and a full description of our closed recirculating aquarium system and its procedures for maintenance are given. (Author).
