Book A Class II Cultural Resource Inventory of the Lower White River and Danforth Hills Known Recoverable Coal Resource Areas KRCRAs Moffat and Rio Blanco Counties Colorado

Download or read book A Class II Cultural Resource Inventory of the Lower White River and Danforth Hills Known Recoverable Coal Resource Areas KRCRAs Moffat and Rio Blanco Counties Colorado written by E. Kinzie Gordon and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between November 1980 and September 1981, a Class II cultural inventory addressing approximately 126,567 acres of Known Recoverable Coal Resource Areas (KRCRAs) was undertaken by Gordon & Kranzush, Inc. The work was conducted under Contract Number YA-553-CTO-1063 for the Craig District, White River Resource Area, of the Bureau of Land Management in the Danforth Hills KRCRA and the Lower White River KRCRA, southern Moffat and northern Rio Blanco Counties, Colorado. Class II sample survey results were utilized to construct scientifically reliable models for predictive location of cultural resources to guide the Bureau of Land Management in application of Unsuitability Criterion #7 to large areas of known coal resources, in order to facilitate protection of cultural resources at a very early point in the planning process. A random sample of the KRCRAs was generated, resulting in the selection of 194 40-acre sample units (7760 acres) to be subjected to intensive 100% pedestrian coverage to provide cultural and environmental data for model construction. Eighteen additional 40-acre tracts (720 acres) were selected and surveyed to verify model predictions. A single predictive model for the entire KRCRA under consideration proved to be inaccurate and unreliable. Consequently, three separate geographic areas were refined and three separate models created. Acceptable accuracy in predicting resource presence or absence within 40-acre tracts utilizing environmental and topographical variables was achieved for the Danforth Hills KRCRA and the Elk Springs portion of the Lower White River KRCRA. Poor accuracy resulted for the remaining portion of the Lower White River KRCRA, due to its great internal environmental diversity. The inventory located 160 non-recent resources (146 of which were recorded within the surveyed tracts) including 47 sites, 40 localities and 73 isolated finds. Aboriginal resources included campsites, lithic scatters, rock art, and sheltered localities, increasing in frequency from the Paleo-indian (pre-5000 BC) to the Proto-historic Periods. The three historic resources are isolates and only limited inferences regarding historic (pre-AD 1931) Euroamerican penetration of the KRCRA could be drawn. One prehistoric site, 5 MF1299, is considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Twenty-eight other resources may be eligible, but final determinations await further data recovery. Avoidance, protection and full eligibility evaluations for these resources are recommended. No previously recorded sites included in the National Register listing are located within the KRCRA boundaries.

Book The Reanalysis of Class II Cultural Resource Inventory Data from the Lower White River Known Recoverable Coal Resource Area

Book excerpt: "On June 30, Gordon & Kranzush, Inc, (G&K) was contracted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to conduct a Class II (sample) inventory of approximately 6.7% (8500 acres) of 126,567 acres of the Lower White River Danforth Hills Known Recoverable Coal Resource Areas (KRCRAs) in the BLM Craig District in Moffat and Rio Blanco Counties, Colorado. The sample inventory was authorized under Contract Number YA-553-CTO-1063, and was designed to locate, record and evaluate the significances of all non-recent (pre-AD 1931), exposed cultural resources within a portion of the KRCRAs in a manner which would allow an objective estimate of the nature and distribution of cultural resources in the entire study area. These objectives were approached through 100% intensive pedestrian survey of 212 randomly selected forty-acre tracts drawn from an eligible sample unit universe of 1247 such tracts in the two KRCRAs, and through computer analyses of variable data recorded during the inventory which resulted in the formulation of a resource location predictive model for the study areas. In the final report submitted under YA-553-CTO-1063 (Gordon et al. 1982) G&K presented three predictive models of site location for the Danforth Hills and Lower White River KRCRAs. Under the hypothesis that environmental variations will cause variation in factors important to the prediction of resource location, individual discriminant analyses were performed using tract data from each of three recognized environmental zones: the Danforth Area, the Elk Springs Area and the Lower White River Area (Figure 1). The analyses resulted in a high degree of accuracy in predicting the presence or absence of cultural resources within the Danforth and the Elk Springs Areas, but G&K was unable to derive a predictive function for the Lower White River Area that exceeded approximately 67% in accuracy. G&K proposed modification of Contract Number YA-553-CTO-1063 to reanalyze data from the Lower White River Area to achieve a model accuracy rate of 75% or greater. BLM authorized the addition of Modification No. 1 of Contract Number YA-553-CTO-1063 on September 27, 1982. This document constitutes the final report of analyses conducted under Modification No. 1 of YA-553-CTO-1063"--Introduction.
