Download or read book That s a Crazy One written by Mel Stones and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That's A Crazy One is an inside look at the youth culture that dominated downtown NYC in the early 1990's. That same culture that helped spark the multi-million dollar industries of skateboarding and streetwear that exist now. The subjects were the inspiration for Larry Clark's cult classic film KIDS. In stark contrast to the storyline told in the film,it is the true capture of what life was like for the cast of KIDS prior to the film being made and released. Photographed by Mel Stones & High throughout 1991-1995, the two teenage girls used NYC public school darkrooms to develop and print these images. Shot by insiders, That's A Crazy One is a rare archival portrait of early NYC street skating and the intimate relationships that existed between this crew of kids. Shot in low light on 35mm film pushed to the max, the images are grainy and gritty and bring you back to Pre-Giuliani New York rawness. That's a Crazy One features images that run a wide gamut, from kids sleeping on the train, skateboarding through the streets, smoking weed and drinking 40's, to the abandoned buildings and roof that were their playgrounds. However it is the dedication of the book that sets the tone for the images that follow. Once read, you realize that many of the kids on these pages are no longer among the living. Often mistaken as a documentary film, KIDS left an aftershock amongst this group of teenagers long after the limelight faded, with no solid foundation many met tragic ends. These lives so superficially portrayed on screen were genuinely struggling and that struggle materialized in the deaths of many of them. The images evoke the painful truth of how one can feel alone and together at the same time.Too painful to face their losses, these images have remained archived for over 20 years. That's A Crazy One takes you through their cathartic journey. All profits from book sales will be donated to NYC Public Schools Photography Program in memorial to their departed.

Book excerpt: Of all the great warriors of Native America, Crazy Horse remains the most enigmatic. Scorned from his childhood for his light hair, he was a man who spurned the love of finery and honors so characteristic of Lakota Sioux warriors. Despite these differences, Crazy Horse led his people to their greatest victory at the Battle of the Little Big Horn where General Custer fell. Crazy Horse's entire life was a triumph of the spirit. In youth, Crazy Horse was set aside by his powerful vision of Rider, the spiritual expression of his future greatness, and by the passion and grief of his overwhelming love for a woman. It was only in battle that his heart could find rest. As his world crumbled, Crazy Horse managed to find his way in harmony with the age-old wisdom of the Lakota—and to beat the US Army on its own terms. He lived, and died, his own man.

Book excerpt: "e;There's something evil emanating form Boston Harbor in this supernatural thriller, and we aren't talking about the smell at low tide. The plot features enough greed, ambition, and self-deception to stock a thriller of the more mundane variety. But on top of that, the author builds a ghost story to manipulate the protagonists beyond where they are prepared to manipulate one another. A Yankee tycoon has begun to build a gambling casino on a private island in Boston Harbor. When workers unearth puzzling stone structures, progress is halted until an archaeologist can render a verdict. The tycoon calls Peter Van Zandt, a scholar who has suffered both professional and personal disaster of late. Mourning the loss of his wife and struggling to raise their small son alone, Peter has seen his judgment falter and his reputation skid. Working feverishly on the island, he becomes convinced that he has discovered a Celtic ritual circle of world-shaking significance. As he falls under the stones' power, he is haunted by spooky visions mingling the sanguinary history of the site with ghostly images of his wife. Both Peter's sanity and the life of his son hang on his obsession. . . Book excerpt: It’s an old-time playtime—nothing electronic, just games that have stood the test of time! They help children build skills like hand-eye coordination, problem solving, and simply learning how to be a good team player and work well with others. But most of all, they’re lots of fun. This collection of timeless games guarantees kids a great time—by themselves, with a group of friends, or with their family. And best of all, no batteries are required . . . and very little equipment, too. There’s Hopscotch and Dodgeball, Four Square and Stoopball, Horse and One Old Cat (a ball game similar to baseball, but with only one base). All you need is your brain—and occasionally a paper and pen—to play games like Association, the Minister’s Cat, and Dumb Crambo (which is similar to Charades, but has a rhyming twist). A rainy day with no pals around would be just right to make Hand Shadows, walk on Can Stilts, or practice Jacks. Don’t forget card games like Crazy Eights and Rummy, Crab and Sack Races, and old favorites like Duck, Duck, Goose and Red Rover. And because no parent likes to hear the whine of "Are we there yet?" there’s a whole chapter of games for the car! Black-and-white illustrations keep the old-timey feel while getting kids excited to play. Simple instructions explain how many people can play, what you need, the object of the game, and the basic rules. For extra entertainment, there are also lots of fun facts about the history of the games sprinkled throughout. This book is so packed with activities that kids will want to turn off their computers, shut down their PlayStations and Xboxes, and get playing the old-fashioned way!
Download or read book There Are Four Trees on Your Stone written by Jean Leonard and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02-18 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you are a 28-year-old white woman reporter, with a newspaper editor husband and a college administrator father, and you find a stone on a holy Lakota mountain, and a Lakota holy man says, Do you see the four trees on this stone? you look and see only four fern leaves fossilized on the stone. When he says You will meet four men in 9,2,4, and 8 and points to some fossilized numbers in the corner of the stone, you are skeptical and offer to give him the stone. When he says, No, it is your stone, you do keep it. And over the next two years, when in September, February, April, and August, you meet four men of the bloodlines of great Lakota (Sioux) and Apache, you start honoring the stone, and the mountain you found it on. You start paying close attention to the holy man, Frank Fools Crow, and his wife Kate, who is the mother you never had. This book is the story of finding the four men, the four trees. It is the story of what they and Fools Crow taught me as we traveled several states together. There were powerful adventures at North and South Dakota and Montana reservations and universities, a Minnesota sacred pipestone quarry and Minnesota maximum security prison, a California publishing company, and Alaska cities. These are places where September, February, April, and August brought four holy men. The skeptical just the facts, man white woman began to see the connectedness of all of life. On Bear Butte near Sturgis, South Dakota, where Crazy Horse had fasted, she gave her life to the Great Spirit, because her energies were being miserably unused and the world was going by without her doing something she felt she should be doing. In exchange for her offering up her life, the stone glowed, a tree gave a loving message, stars fell, and she would never feel alone again. Fools Crows prediction also brought Native American women to me, and we wrote their books and traveled their lands in Minnesota and Alaska. It was fun to travel them again in this book. Also crossing my path were people of black, white, and Asian American cultures. The book tells of the exciting events with these people. I am writing this, my story, so that all these people can live on.
