This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Christian Science Exposition of the Atonement In giving you our thoughts on the sublime subject of Atonement, we are not presumptuous enough to think that What we may say on that subject is all the Truth and nothing but the Truth. It can hardly be expected of one who has been preaching for thirty years (and conscientiously too) the old orthodox view of the Atonement, that he should be able to learn, and accurately express with only three years' of study, and proof, the new tongue, which the Spiritual interpretation of Scriptures requires. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Christian Atonement The following Manual is not presented to the public, because the subjects it discusses are not ably set forth by men of deep theological science and ardent piety, but because most of the works published are found in large volumes of systems of theology, and are, therefore, not so accessible to, and sought for by, the Christian public. We live in a day when long discussions, on any one subject, however important, are not so well received as those that are short, direct, and comprehensive. Download or read book The Atonement of Christ and the Justification of the Sinner Classic Reprint written by Andrew Fuller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement of Christ, and the Justification of the Sinner In looking into the composition of the human mind we observe various passions and propensities; and if we inspect their operations, we shall see in each a marked aversion from the true God, and from all true religion. For example: Man loves to think, and cannot live without thinking; but he does not love to think of God; God is not in all his thoughts. Man delights in activity, is perpetually in motion, but has no heart to act for God. Men take pleasure in conversation, and are never more cheerful than when engaged in it; but if God and religion be introduced, they are usually struck dumb, and show an inclination to drop the subject. Men greatly de light in hearing and telling news but if the glorious news of the gospel be sounded in their ears, it fre quentlv 'proves as unwelcome as Paul's preaching at Athens. In fine, man feels the necessity of a God, but has no relish for the true God. There is a remarka ble instance of this in the conduct of these nations planted by the king of Assyria in the cities of Sa maria. They were consumed by wild beasts, and considered it as an expression of displeasure from the god of the land. They wished to become ao quainted with him, that they might please him. An Israelitish priest is sent to teach them the manner of the god of the land. But when he taught them the fear of Jehovah, his character and worship do not seem to have suited their taste; for each nation pre ferred the worship of its own gods. 2 Kings, 17. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement, or the Death of Christ the Redemption of His People: A Posthumous Treatise The untenable Views and theories of certain individuals in support of universal redemption are animadverted upon and refuted; but this is intended only to render the investigation of the doctrine more thorough, and its vindication more complete, and with no View to disparage either the talents or characters of the parties referred to. This is the divine mission for which Christ was sent into the world. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. But what is the divine method of saving the world by Christ? Was the salvation of the human race to be purely an intellectual process, requiring only a divine teacher of the truth? Is the production of this great mental, moral, and spiritual change a function of the reason only, when it has been taught by Christ; or was the process of man's salvation to be ethical as well as rational, dc manding a perfect moral law, illustrated by the. Book Doctrine of the Atonement as Taught by Christ Himself

Download or read book Doctrine of the Atonement as Taught by Christ Himself written by George Smeaton and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-19 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doctrine of the Atonement, as Taught by Christ Himself: Or the Sayings of Jesus on the Atonement, Exegetically Expounded and Classified My task in this work has been simply to determine, by strict exegetical investigation, the import of Christ's words, and to reproduce His thoughts by the exact interpretation of lan guage. I have no other desire than to ascertain what He did say, and to abide by it 3 and the principle on which alone it is safe to carry on investigations into doctrine on any point, is, I am fully persuaded, to go to the Scriptures, not for the starting point of thought alone, but for the substance of thought as well, or for the rounded and concrete development of the doc trine in all its elements: and these will be found in Christ's sayings, if we but patiently investigate them. It is not, then, to the Christian consciousness that I appeal with some modern teachers, nor to Christian feeling and Christian reason with others, but to the sayings of the Great Teacher, and of His commissioned servants, employed as His organs of revelation to the Church of all time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Atonement The Atonement is certainly the greatest topic that can occupy our thoughts, because it is the central feature of God's Fatherhood, the central purpose of the life of Jesus Christ, the central object of the ceaseless and unsleeping energy of God the Holy Spirit in the Church. We will begin with the plain meaning of the word. I know no cause to doubt the simple derivation that Atonement is At-one-ment - the removal of all hindrances to perfect unity. That is the problem God has set before Himself to solve. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Atonement and the Death of Christ

Download or read book Atonement and the Death of Christ written by William Lane Craig and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through his death on the cross, Christ atoned for sin and so reconciled people to God. New Testament authors drew upon a range of metaphors and motifs to describe this salvific act, and down through history Christian thinkers have tried to articulate various theories to explain the atonement. While Christ's sacrifice serves as a central tenet of the Christian faith, the mechanism of atonement--exactly how Christ effects our salvation--remains controversial and ambiguous to many Christians. In Atonement and the Death of Christ, William Lane Craig conducts an interdisciplinary investigation of this crucial Christian doctrine, drawing upon Old and New Testament studies, historical theology, and analytic philosophy. The study unfolds in three discrete parts: Craig first explores the biblical basis of atonement and unfolds the wide variety of motifs used to characterize this doctrine. Craig then highlights some of the principal alternative theories of the atonement offered by great Christian thinkers of the premodern era. Lastly, Craig's exploration delves into a constructive and innovative engagement with philosophy of law, which allows an understanding of atonement that moves beyond mystery and into the coherent mechanism of penal substitution. Along the way, Craig enters into conversation with contemporary systematic theories of atonement as he seeks to establish a position that is scripturally faithful and philosophically sound. The result is a multifaceted perspective that upholds the suffering of Christ as a substitutionary, representational, and redemptive act that satisfies divine justice. In addition, this carefully reasoned approach addresses the rich tapestry of Old Testament imagery upon which the first Christians drew to explain how the sinless Christ saved his people from the guilt of their sins.
