Book A Christian Palestinian Syriac Horologion

Download or read book A Christian Palestinian Syriac Horologion written by Matthew Black and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1954, the manuscript of this book of hours was bought in Cairo in 1906 for the Berlin State Library from a Syrian dealer. It may have come from the library of the Convent of St Catherine from Mount Sinai. It is a complete Malkite Horologion: a translation for the most part of a Horologion of the Greek Orthodox Church into Palestinian Syriac, the dialect of Amaric employed in their scriptures and services by the Malkites, a Syrian sect of the Orthodox Church. It is rich in Psalm texts, most of which are new to the Palestinian Syricac Bible. Internal evidence points to Palestine and perhaps to Jerusalem as the ultimate provenance of the text.

Book A Guide to Early Jewish Texts and Traditions in Christian Transmission

Download or read book A Guide to Early Jewish Texts and Traditions in Christian Transmission written by Gabriele Boccaccini and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewish culture of the Hellenistic and early Roman periods established a basis for all monotheistic religions, but its main sources have been preserved to a great degree through Christian transmission. This Guide is devoted to problems of preservation, reception, and transformation of Jewish texts and traditions of the Second Temple period in the many Christian milieus from the ancient world to the late medieval era. It approaches this corpus not as an artificial collection of reconstructed texts--a body of hypothetical originals--but rather from the perspective of the preserved materials, examined in their religious, social, and political contexts. It also considers the other, non-Christian, channels of the survival of early Jewish materials, including Rabbinic, Gnostic, Manichaean, and Islamic. This unique project brings together scholars from many different fields in order to map the trajectories of early Jewish texts and traditions among diverse later cultures. It also provides a comprehensive and comparative introduction to this new field of study while bridging the gap between scholars of early Judaism and of medieval Christianity.

Book Christian Arabic Versions of Daniel

Download or read book Christian Arabic Versions of Daniel written by Miriam Lindgren Hjälm and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Christian Arabic Versions of Daniel, Miriam L. Hjälm provides an insight into the Arabic transmission of the biblical Book of Daniel. This book offers an inventory and a classification of extant manuscripts as well as a detailed account of the translation techniques employed in the early manuscripts. The use of the texts is discussed and the various versions are compared with liturgical Bible material. Miriam L. Hjälm shows the importance of Arabic as a tool for understanding the development of the religious heritage of Christian communities under Muslim rule. Arabic became an indispensable part of the everyday life of many Near Eastern Christians and was increasingly used next to the established liturgical languages, which remained the standard measure of the biblical text.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Apocrypha

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Apocrypha written by Gerbern S. Oegema and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the Apocrypha addresses the Old Testament Apocrypha, known to be important early Jewish texts that have become deutero-canonical for some Christian churches, non-canonical for other churches, and that are of lasting cultural significance. In addition to the place given to the classical literary, historical, and tradition-historical introductory questions, essays focus on the major social and theological themes of each individual book. With contributions from leading scholars from around the world, the Handbook acts as an authoritative reference work on the current state of Apocrypha research, and at the same time carves out future directions of study. This Handbook offers an overview of the various Apocrypha and relevant topics related to them by presenting updated research on each individual apocryphal text in historical context, from the late Persian and early Hellenistic periods to the early Roman era. The essays provided here examine the place of the Apocrypha in the context of Early Judaism, the relationship between the Apocrypha and texts that came to be canonized, the relationship between the Apocrypha and the Septuagint, Qumran, the Pseudepigrapha, and the New Testament, as well as their reception history in the Western world. Several chapters address overarching themes, such as genre and historicity, Jewish practices and beliefs, theology and ethics, gender and the role of women, and sexual ethics.

Book The Virgin Mary in Byzantium c 400 1000

Download or read book The Virgin Mary in Byzantium c 400 1000 written by Mary B. Cunningham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Virgin Mary assumed a position of central importance in Byzantium. This major and authoritative study examines her portrayal in liturgical texts during the first six centuries of Byzantine history. Focusing on three main literary genres that celebrated this holy figure, it highlights the ways in which writers adapted their messages for different audiences. Mary is portrayed variously as defender of the imperial city, Constantinople, virginal Mother of God, and ascetic disciple of Christ. Preachers, hymnographers, and hagiographers used rhetoric to enhance Mary's powerful status in Eastern Christian society, depicting her as virgin and mother, warrior and ascetic, human and semi-divine being. Their paradoxical statements were based on the fundamental mystery that Mary embodied: she was the mother of Christ, the Word of God, who provided him with the human nature that he assumed in his incarnation. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
