Book Choice Theory With Addicted Populations

Download or read book Choice Theory With Addicted Populations written by Michael Rice and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foreword to this book is written by Dr William Glasser. This book is for both professionals in the field of substance abuse as well as those who may live with or love an addicted individual. It contains techniques, directives, ideas, and explanations for those who may be addicted to prescription meds, street drugs or alcohol. Also included are several exercises that Mike has developed over the years in working with groups that he has combined along with the work of Dr. William Glasser, M. D., the creator of Reality Therapy and most recently, Choice Theory. Not all of the information is user-friendly for the non-professional because a close friend or family member will never be able to establish a clinical relationship with the addict. The non-professional will always be recognized by the addict as Mom, Dad, Friend, Wife, Husband, etc which will inhibit the addict from taking them as someone who might understand and be able to help them. However, there are many other things in the book that the non-professional will be able to utilize that will make their personal life better by knowing what they can control and what they can't control with their loved one. Mike applies Choice Theory, the new Reality Therapy, by allowing the client to create their own personal treatment plan and not one that is necessarily designed by the therapist or agency. This allows for the client to feel s/he has control and choices rather than being coerced or forced to do something they don't want to do because someone else said they had to do it. People eventually learn that the drug or alcohol that they are consuming is effective for ridding themselves of unwanted emotions. Quite bluntly, they are unhappy. They are unhappy because of unsatisfying relationships with the important people in their life. After several weeks or months, they become biochemically addicted to the substance. They are now functioning on a daily basis with drug affected thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while causing harm to their internal organs. What they want mostly, satisfying relationships, are being destroyed by their behavior as well as the behavior of those whom they want in their life. While their drug of choice numbs their unwanted emotions, it also numbs their wanted emotions. The lack of these unwanted emotions fools them into thinking they are happy . . . a major misdiagnosis or identification. They are only feeling pleasure which they confuse for being happiness. This book is essential for understanding not only the wanted happiness of the addict, but the happiness of those who are involved with the addict as well. Understanding what motivates us is the key to satisfying our basic needs that create and maintain our happiness.

Book Choice Behavioral Economics and Addiction

Download or read book Choice Behavioral Economics and Addiction written by Rudolph Eugene Vuchinich and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-11-13 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choice, Behavioural Economics and Addiction is about the theory, data, and applied implications of choice-based models of substance use and addiction. The distinction between substance use and addiction is important, because many individuals use substances but are not also addicted to them. The behavioural economic perspective has made contributions to the analysis of both of these phenomena and, while the major focus of the book is on theories of addiction, it is necessary also to consider the behavioural economic account of substance use in order to place the theories in their proper context and provide full coverage of the contribution of behavioural economics to this field of study. The book discusses the four major theories of addiction that have been developed in the area of economic science/behavioural economics. They are: . hyperbolic discounting . melioration . relative addiction . rational addiction The main objective of the book is to popularise these ideas among addiction researchers, academics and practitioners. The specific aims are to articulate the shared and distinctive elements of these four theories, to present and discuss the latest empirical work on substance abuse and addiction that is being conducted in this area, and to articulate a range of applied implications of this body of work for clinical, public health and public policy initiatives. The book is based on an invitation-only conference entitled, Choice, Behavioural Economics and Addiction: Theory, Evidence and Applications held at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, March 30 - April 1, 2001. The conference was attended by prominent scientists and scholars, representing a range of disciplines concerned with theories of addiction and their consequences for policy and practice. The papers in the book are based on the papers given at the above conference, together with commentaries by distinguished experts and, in many cases, replies to these comments by the presenters.

Book A Choice Theory Psychology Guide to Addictions

Download or read book A Choice Theory Psychology Guide to Addictions written by Michael Rice and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Choice Theory approach to addictive behavior does not rely on external controlling methods to make someone do something they don't want to do. Instead, the Choice Theory approach is discovering what and how the client really would want his/her life to be; identifying the important people in their life; evaluating the client's choices and how those choices either helped or harmed their relationships; allowing them the freedom and respect to make their own decisions on how to improve their life; and creating a plan on how to get what they want in their life. Clients are more inclined to improve their life when it is their own idea, feel respected, and don't feel threatened or coerced to do something they don't want to do.

Download or read book TIP 35 Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Use Disorder Treatment Updated 2019 written by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.

Download or read book Choice Theory written by William Glasser, M.D. and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2010-11-16 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. William Glasser offers a new psychology that, if practiced, could reverse our widespread inability to get along with one another, an inability that is the source of almost all unhappiness. For progress in human relationships, he explains that we must give up the punishing, relationship–destroying external control psychology. For example, if you are in an unhappy relationship right now, he proposes that one or both of you could be using external control psychology on the other. He goes further. And suggests that misery is always related to a current unsatisfying relationship. Contrary to what you may believe, your troubles are always now, never in the past. No one can change what happened yesterday.

Book Theory of Addiction

  • Author : Robert West
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2013-11-04
  • ISBN : 0470674210
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Theory of Addiction written by Robert West and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word ‘addiction’ these days is used to refer to a chronic condition where there is an unhealthily powerful motivation to engage in a particular behaviour. This can be driven by many different factors – physiological, psychological, environmental and social. If we say that it is all about X, we miss V, W, Y and Z. So, some people think addicts are using drugs to escape from unhappy lives, feelings of anxiety and so on; many are. Some people think drugs become addictive because they alter the brain chemistry to create powerful urges; that is often true. Others think that drug taking is about seeking after pleasure; often it is. Some take the view that addiction is a choice – addicts weigh up the pros and cons of doing what they do and decide the former outweigh the latter. Yet others believe that addicts suffer from poor impulse control; that is often true… And so it goes on. When you look at the evidence, you see that all these positions capture important aspects of the problem – but they are not complete explanations. Neuroscience can help us delve more deeply into some of these explanations, while the behavioural and social sciences are better at exploring others. We need a model that puts all this together in a way that can help us decide what to do in different cases. Should we prescribe a drug, give the person some ‘tender loving care’, put them in prison or what? Theory of Addiction provides this synthesis. The first edition was well received: ‘Throughout the book the reader is exposed to a vast number of useful observations...The theoretical aims are timely, refreshing, ambitious and above all challenging. It opens up a new way of looking at addiction and has the potential to move the field of addiction a considerable leap forward. Thus we wholeheartedly would like to recommend the book for students as well as scholars. Read and learn!’ Nordic Studies on Alcohol and Drugs ‘The book provides a comprehensive review of existing theories - over 30 in all - and this synthesis of theories constitutes an important contribution in and of itself... West is to be commended for his synthesis of addiction theories that span neurobiology, psychology and social science and for his insights into what remains unexplained.’ Addiction This new edition of Theory of Addiction builds on the first, including additional theories in the field, a more developed specification of PRIME theory and analysis of the expanding evidence base. With this important new information, Theory of Addiction will continue to be essential reading for all those working in addiction, from student to experienced practitioner – as urged above, Read and learn!
