Download or read book Early Placentia written by Jeanette Gardner and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today Placentia is part of the vast suburban Orange County sprawl that extends eastward from Los Angeles into Southern California's "Inland Empire." This landscape of homes and shopping centers was a windswept wilderness until a Mexican land grant helped transform it into ranches that dry-farmed hay and irrigated fruits and vegetables. The arrival of the Valencia orange and the discovery of oil reshaped the future of Placentia again as groves and derricks covered the land in the first half of the 20th century. The railroad also arrived, followed by more oil discovery to the east and the coming of laborers of Mexican heritage, who formed a community to the south. Schools, churches, and civic buildings remained ancillary to the predominantly agrarian society and economy that existed through the World War II era.

Download or read book Vaquero Turned Vintner written by Barbara Booth Keiller and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keiller's quest for stories and images that both animate and illuminate the U.S.-Mexico border landscape leads the author to California's Santa Maria Valley. Border writer Keiller follows her intuition to the genius loci of the Santa Maria River Valley. She reads about an old adobe located at the Bien Nacido Vineyard and intuits the location matches the landscape that calls to her. She meets vintner James Ontiveros and the story of early Californios begins to emerge. James Ontiveros, a ninth-generation Californio, introduces Keiller to the story of his ancestors traveling north into Alta California with the 1781 Pobladore Expedition to establish Los Angeles and the Santa Barbara Presidio. Images of diseños, ranchos, horses, long-horned cattle, reatas, trails, missions, and wine embellish the tapestry of relationships interwoven throughout Vaquero Turned Vintner: The Ontiveros Border Story. The author's love of the Mexico-United States border landscape energizes her experiences exploring the story. Barbara delves into the layers of the story using her skills as a therapist … listening to storytellers, asking questions, and researching the archives. Lures, cues, dreams, and intuitions lead the way. Keiller describes her evolving relationships with people, the landscapes, and the wildlife throughout her odyssey that covers more than a decade from California, Baja California, Mexico, Arizona, Spain, France, Argentina, and Chile. She reports details in the form of a diary, much like the early explorers reported the day-to-day experiences on their expeditions into Alta California.
Download or read book Memoirs from Away written by Helen M. Buss and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the imagination entwine the shreds of memory of family, place and culture to root a self in the fluid experience of the present? Daughter, wife, mother, teacher, writer and feminist academic, Helen M. Buss / Margaret Clarke has lived in many parts of Canada and writes from a life of multiple perspectives full of contradictory loyalties and obligations, of opposing histories and identities. For this woman, whose sense of a unified identity is so tenuous that she even writes under two names, writing memoirs becomes the way to bring together the diverse strands of her life. A Newfoundland girl who awakened to the public world just at the moment her homeland joined Canada, she writes of her childhood, of the effects of war, technology, the politics of nation and gender, and of the private world of several generations of her close-knit family. From the perspective of a woman from “away”, she discovers a New Found Land of “girlhood” that weaves past and present in a narrative that delights in questioning its own making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images of Baseball: Mexican American Baseball in Los Angeles celebrates the flourishing culture of the great pastime in East Los Angeles and other communities where a strong sense of Mexican identity and pride was fostered in a sporting atmosphere of both fierce athleticism and social celebration. From 1900, with the establishment of the Mexican immigrant community, to the rise of Fernandomania in the 1980s, baseball diamonds in greater Los Angeles were both proving grounds for youth as they entered their educations and careers, and the foundation for the talented Forty-Sixty Club, comprised of players of at least 40, and often over 60, years of age. These evocative photographs look back on the great Mexican American teams and players of the 20th century, including the famous Chorizeros--the proclaimed "Yankees of East L.A."
