Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for the adult players at the open-air Swan theatre in 1613, this master-piece of Jacobean city comedy signals its ironic nature even in the title: chaste maids, like most other goods and people in London's busiest commercial area, are likely to be fake. Money is more important than either happiness or honour; and the most coveted commodities to be bought with it are sex and social prestige. Middleton interweaves the fortunes of four families, who either seek to marry their children off as profitably as possible, to stop having any more for fear of poverty, or to acquire some in order to keep their property in the family. Most prosperous is the husband who pimps his wife to a rich knight and lets him support the household with his alimony. Like many early modern critics of London's enormous growth, this play warned: the city is a monster that lives off the money the country produces.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,0, University of Paderborn (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: "What is the City but the People?" - Exploring Renaissance London, language: English, abstract: The city comedy "A Chaste Maid in Cheapside" was written by Thomas Middleton in 1613 and published in quarto in 1630. It is situated in Cheapside, the main market square in London then. The story consists of several plots that develop around the constituent families and cross in the course of the play. In this work, I explore a part of Renaissance London. With the help of Thomas Middleton’s play "A Chaste Maid in Cheapside", published in 1630, I investigate the gender role of the main character Moll, who is also the “chaste maid”. I draw attention to the questions: How is “the chaste maid” represented? What is her role within the social systems of family, lover and arranged marriage partner? How is Moll an example for women’s positions between gender and social roles within society? I argue that Moll’s role shows a clear example of how women were treated unequally and how they had less rights than men. When analyzing the woman’s role within society, I consult secondary sources that examine the image of women and gender during that time so that the satire of the play can be understood accordingly.

Book Shakespeare and London A Dictionary

Download or read book Shakespeare and London A Dictionary written by Sarah Dustagheer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare and London: A Dictionary is a topographical reference book of all the London locations, allusions and colloquial terms mentioned in Shakespeare's complete works. For many years critics have argued that Shakespeare did not engage with the city in which he lived, however London's topography and life is present in all his work, in its language, its locations and its characters. This dictionary offers a concise and fascinating insight into the city's impact on the Shakespearean imagination and provides readers with a wide-ranging guide to early modern London, its contemporary meanings and the ways in which Shakespeare employs these throughout the canon.
