Download or read book Victorian Reformation written by Dominic Janes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early Victorian England there was intense interest in understanding the early Church as an inspiration for contemporary sanctity. This was manifested in a surge in archaeological inquiry and also in the construction of new churches using medieval models. Some Anglicans began to use a much more complicated form of ritual involving vestments, candles, and incense. This "Anglo-Catholic" movement was vehemently opposed by evangelicals and dissenters, who saw this as the vanguard of full-blown "popery." The disputed buildings, objects, and art works were regarded by one side as idolatrous and by the other as sacred and beautiful expressions of devotion. Dominic Janes seeks to understand the fierce passions that were unleashed by the contended practices and artifacts - passions that found expression in litigation, in rowdy demonstrations, and even in physical violence. During this period, Janes observes, the wider culture was preoccupied with the idea of pollution caused by improper sexuality. The Anglo-Catholics had formulated a spiritual ethic that linked goodness and beauty. Their opponents saw this visual worship as dangerously sensual. In effect, this sacred material culture was seen as a sexual fetish. The origins of this understanding, Janes shows, lay in radical circles, often in the context of the production of anti-Catholic pornography which titillated with the contemplation of images of licentious priests, nuns, and monks.

Book The Letters and Diaries of John Henry Newman Volume IX

Download or read book The Letters and Diaries of John Henry Newman Volume IX written by John Henry Newman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Henry Newman (1801-90) was brought up in the Church of England in the Evangelical tradition. An Oxford graduate and Fellow of Oriel College, he was appointed Vicar of St Mary's Oxford in 1828; from 1839 onwards he began to have doubts about the claims of the Anglican Church and in 1845 he was received into the Roman Catholic Church. He was made a Cardinal in 1879. His influence on both the restoration of Roman Catholicism in England and the advance of Catholic ideas in the Church of England was profound. This volume covers a crucially important and significant period in Newman's life. The Church of England bishops' continuing condemnation of Tract 90 - plus Pusey's two-year suspension for preaching a university sermon on the Real Presence - are major factors in Newman resigning as Vicar of St Mary's, Oxford. His doubts about the Church of England are deeper and stronger than ever, and he is moving closer to Rome. William Lockhart's sudden defection to Rome in August 1843 precipitates his resignation. He preaches his final Anglican sermon, 'The Parting of Friends', and retires into lay communion at Littlemore. The first edition of University Sermons, including the celebrated sermon on theological development, virtually sells out within a fortnight.

This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charge Delivered to the Clergy of the Diocese of London at the Visitation, in July, 1834 Reverend Brethren, The interval of time, which has elapsed since I first met you in the character of your diocesan, has been marked by the rapid growth, or development, of a spirit of innovation. I would not be understood to use the word in an invidious sense; but simply as denoting a bent and tendency towards change, in almost all the component parts of the social fabric. It may be for good, or for evil: we trust that it may be overruled by Providence to good: but whether for good, or for evil, the spirit is gone forth into the world; and while we look with wonder, if not with dismay, at its past triumphs, it is impossible for us not to trace its progress with anxiety, and to watch its intents with somewhat of apprehension, if not of alarm.
