Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been much concern over the potential or realized environmental impacts of the long-range transport of acidifying substances in the atmosphere, and several studies done in Atlantic Canada have reported changes in water chemistry in recent decades. This research report presents the results of a statistical analysis of water quality data for 28 rivers in Atlantic Canada (13 in Nova Scotia, 4 in New Brunswick, 2 in Prince Edward Island and 9 in Newfoundland). For some of the rivers, data are available from 1966-85, with sample sizes that exceed 200 dates over that period. The data was examined for longer-term temporal trends in water chemistry, as well as for identification of shorter-term events of relatively high or low concentration.
