Book excerpt: What do these scenarios have in common: a professional tennis player returning a serve, a woman evaluating a first date across the table, a naval officer assessing a threat to his ship, and a comedian about to reveal a punch line? In this counterintuitive and insightful work, author Frank Partnoy weaves together findings from hundreds of scientific studies and interviews with wide-ranging experts to craft a picture of effective decision-making that runs counter to our brutally fast-paced world. Even as technology exerts new pressures to speed up our lives, it turns out that the choices we make––unconsciously and consciously, in time frames varying from milliseconds to years––benefit profoundly from delay. As this winning and provocative book reveals, taking control of time and slowing down our responses yields better results in almost every arena of life … even when time seems to be of the essence. The procrastinator in all of us will delight in Partnoy’s accounts of celebrity “delay specialists,” from Warren Buffett to Chris Evert to Steve Kroft, underscoring the myriad ways in which delaying our reactions to everyday choices––large and small––can improve the quality of our lives.

Download or read book WORLD POLITICS ON ROHINGYA CRISIS written by Harpreet Singh and published by Laxmi Book Publication. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rohingya are an ethnic, linguistic and Muslim minority group in Myanmar's northern Rakhine state. Although they have been living in Myanmar for centuries, the Myanmar government does not recognize the Rohingya as citizens of Myanmar. The Myanmar government believes the Rohingya are "illegal immigrants" or "Bengalis" who have recently entered the region. As a result, the Rohingya have not been recognized as an official ethnic minority in Myanmar since the 1982 Citizenship Amendment Act. Nowadays these people are stumbling around in different countries as stateless citizens. No country is ready to accept them as its citizens. The Rohingya have a long history of living in Myanmar's Rakhine state. Rakhine state, formerly known as Arakan state, was inhabited by members of the Rohingya Muslim and Buddhist communities. However, within the last two centuries, Arakan Kingdom was conquered by the Burmese in 1784 and then Myanmar, like India, was ruled by the Britishers for a long time. From 1824 to 1948, Myanmar was a slave of the British. The British made Myanmar a colonial state and to work there, the Britishers brought laborers from Bangladesh and different regions of India which had a large number of poor Muslims. Thus, the number of people in this region increased and these people settled permanently in the Rakhine region. After Myanmar gained independence, immigrants were not accepted by the indigenous

Book Nonlinear Control Under Nonconstant Delays

Download or read book Nonlinear Control Under Nonconstant Delays written by Nikolaos Bekiaris-Liberis and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have developed a methodology for control of nonlinear systems in the presence of long delays, with large and rapid variation in the actuation or sensing path, or in the presence of long delays affecting the internal state of a system. In addition to control synthesis, they introduce tools to quantify the performance and the robustness properties of the designs provided in the book. The book is based on the concept of predictor feedback and infinite-dimensional backstepping transformation for linear systems and the authors guide the reader from the basic ideas of the concept?with constant delays only on the input?all the way through to nonlinear systems with state-dependent delays on the input as well as on system states. Readers will find the book useful because the authors provide elegant and systematic treatments of long-standing problems in delay systems, such as systems with state-dependent delays that arise in many applications. In addition, the authors give all control designs by explicit formulae, making the book especially useful for engineers who have faced delay-related challenges and are concerned with actual implementations and they accompany all control designs with Lyapunov-based analysis for establishing stability and performance guarantees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dialectic of Salvation is issue oriented, coming to grips with the many criticisms of liberation theology—the criticisms of the Vatican, Schubert Ogden, and Dennis McCann. The critics are answered through a thorough analysis of the issues involved and a detailed presentation of the position of liberation theology. The book presents the first substantial discussion between the Vatican and liberation theology. It analyzes the Vatican's own theology of freedom and its social doctrine of liberation, focusing on its anthropological assumptions, and shows that the present conflict between the two parties is a conflict between two radically opposed horizons and modes of thinking, between the personalist and the dialectical. Min provides a Hegelian interpretation of liberation, arguing that it is the first theology to take the Hegelian-Marxian heritage seriously in the context of contemporary theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1965, the Second Vatican Council formally issued a historic document titled Nostra Aetate (In Our Time). It was an attempt to frame the relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and the Jewish people. Never before had an ecumenical council attempted such a task. The landmark document issued by the Council and proclaimed by Pope Paul VI precipitated a Copernican revolution in Catholic-Jewish relations and started a process that has spread to the Protestant and Orthodox worlds as well. A Jubilee for All Time, consisting of essays and reflections by Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, and Jewish scholars and theologians, by pastors and professors from the United States, Canada, Ireland, Great Britain, and Israel, is an evaluation of what Nostra Aetate has accomplished thus far and how Christian-Jewish relations must proceed in building bridges of respect, understanding, and trust between the faith groups. A Jubilee for All Time serves as a source of discussion, learning, and dialoguefor scholars, students and intelligent laypersons who believe that we must create a positive relationship between Judaism and Christianity.

Book The Hidden Pope

Download or read book The Hidden Pope written by Darcy O'Brien and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a PEN/Hemingway Award–winning author: The true story of Pope John Paul II, his Jewish childhood friend, and a milestone in religious history. In October 1978, Karol Wojtyla, Polish Archbishop of Krakow, became Pope John Paul II, the first non-Italian pontiff in 455 years. He had a mission to improve the Catholic Church’s relations with Judaism, Islam, and the Anglican Communion. Only days after the election, he granted Jerzy Kluger, a virtually unknown Jewish businessman, the privilege of first audience at the Vatican. Jerzy was overwhelmed, but not surprised. When they were children, Karol and Jerzy were best friends, known then as Lolek and Jurek. For the pope, this union of Catholic and Jewish faiths was a profound symbol of things to come. It was also a personal gesture that reflected a remarkable bond between the two men. The Hidden Pope is the story of that relationship, from their simple boyhood in the small town of Wadowice in southern Poland to their separation at the beginning of World War II and their survival under Nazi occupation and Soviet tyranny. The reunion almost thirty years later—after Jerzy lost his family in the Holocaust and spent years in Stalinist labor camps—would not only deepen a friendship, but also afford Jerzy a unique perspective on papal intrigue and policies when he was eventually appointed diplomat between the Vatican and Israel. Set against the landmark events of the twentieth century, and the monumental reconciliation between Christianity and Judaism, this singular portrait of John Paul II reveals him as only one of his closest friends can. Readers will come to know the Holy Father as a man, to understand his controversial ideas as expressions of his life experiences, and to discover the genesis of an enduring friendship that would impact the world. The Hidden Pope is “a fascinating personal tale played out against the great moments of modern European history. . . . Anyone intrigued by the often surprising confluences of history, politics and religion will relish this impressive study in faith, friendship and mutual respect” (Publishers Weekly).
