Download or read book Special Course on Subsonic Transonic Aerodynamic Interference for Aircraft written by ADVISORY GROUP FOR AEROSPACE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT NEUILLY-SUR-SEINE (France) and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This course was a follow-up to an AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel Symposium on Subsonic/Transonic Configuration Aerodynamics. The emphasis of the course was on the configuration optimization in the transonic regime where both military and commercial aircraft must cruise efficiently and where military aircraft must maneuver in an agile but stable manner. The course material was updated and presented in a more structured fashion emphasizing the fluid dynamic interference mechanisms that are the keys to the optimization. In addition, some aspects of subcritical interference were also covered, including those arising in the takeoff and landing phase of the flight with high lift devices deployed. Specific topics include: Subsonic/Transonic Aerodynamic Interference for Aircraft; Computational Methods for Subsonic and Transonic Aerodynamic Design; Subsonic/Transonic Viscous Interactions; Transonic Airfoil Development; Application of Computational Procedures in Aerodynamic Design; Transonic Empirical Configuration Design Process; External Stores Interference; and Engine/Airframe Interference.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inter A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique in based on a Vortex Lattice Method (VLM) is presented for treating the unsteady, low speed aerodynamics of a Wing/Fuselage/Pylon/Store(W/F/P/S) combination in an incompressible flow. The main emphasis is placed on a gene practical, cost-effective engineering solution of the complex problem with a reasonable computational efficiency allowing the computer code to run on small personal computers. The computational model presented in this study enables the calculation of the unsteady aerodynamic forces acting on a wing system from undergoing a time dependent three dimensional motion. An unsteady. wing following and wake shedding procedure provides the transient wake shapes. Computed flow field simulations are presented for various unsteady and angle of attack conditions, involving pylon/store locations at various spanwise locations under the wing. The external store separation under the influence of the unsteady wake rollup behind the wing system is modeled by considering the full mutual interaction between the store and the W/F/P configuration. The results show that the method is capable of simulating the important features of the unsteady forces and wake development behind the W/F/P/S configuration.

Book Technical Evaluation Report on the Fluid Dynamics Panel Symposium on Subsonic transonic Configuration Aerodynamics

Download or read book Technical Evaluation Report on the Fluid Dynamics Panel Symposium on Subsonic transonic Configuration Aerodynamics written by Horst Körner and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel held its spring symposium 1980 on Subsonic/Transonic Configuration Aerodynamics at the Hochschule der Bundeswehr Munchen, Neubiberg, 5-7 May, 1980. The requirement of improved performance of military combat and airlift aircraft requires not only highly refined point designs at specific flight conditions, but also mission design to maintain optimal performance over the flight spectrum; for instance, by variable geometry concepts. Of particular importance here is the aerodynamic design of the wing, fuselage, components of the empennage, external and conformal stores, fuselage and wing-mounted nacelle-pylons with their powered jet exhausts at subsonic and transonic Mach numbers such that each component achieves optimal performance under the influence of the other components. Here, not only must adverse interference effects be eliminated, but positive favorable interference must be sought. There have been great strides recently in the understanding of aerodynamic interference through more carefully conducted and highly diagnosed windtunnel tests, as well as by the availability of versatile computer codes and powerful computers. It will be the aim of the Symposium to report on these accomplishments. Vectored thrust in the context with V/STOL in excluded. With this scope the meeting was a direct successor of the FDP-Symposium Aerodynamic Interference held in autumn 1970. At that time the solution of aerodynamic interference problems at subsonic and supersonic speed became feasible with the development of panel methods.

Book Application of the Vortex Lattice CFD Method to Obtaining Unsteady Aerodynamic Predictions About Wing Fuselage Pylon Store Configuration Including Store Separation

Download or read book Application of the Vortex Lattice CFD Method to Obtaining Unsteady Aerodynamic Predictions About Wing Fuselage Pylon Store Configuration Including Store Separation written by C. Kaykayoglu and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unsteady Vortex Lattice Method (UVLM) was used to predict the geometry of the wake and the aerodynamics loads on the Wing/Fuselage/Pylon/ Store (W/F/P/S) configuration in an incompressible flow. The main emphasis was placed on a practical and cost effective engineering solution of the complex problem with a reasonable computational efficiency allowing the computer code to run on personal computers. The mutual interaction between the configuration and the wake flow, which is not known a priori, was studied. Due to the interaction between the configuration and its wake, a new longitudinal vortex develops between the wing-tip and the wing-fuselage junction. It was shown that the wake development influences the unsteady aerodynamic forces acting both on the wing and the external store. Computed flow field simulations were presented for various angle of attack conditions. The effect of the pylon/store location on the wing aerodynamic coefficients were investigated. The external store separation under the influence of the wake rollup was modeled by considering the full mutual interaction between the store and the W/F/P system. The results show that the method is capable of simulating the unsteady aerodynamic interference between the moving store and the flow around the W/F/P configuration.

Book A CFD

  • Pages : 37 pages

Download or read book A CFD written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With advanced subsonic transports and military aircraft operating in the transonic regime, it is becoming important to determine the effects of the coupling between aerodynamic loads and elastic forces. Since aeroelastic effects can significantly impact the design of these aircraft, there is a strong need in the aerospace industry to predict these interactions computationally. Such an analysis in the transonic regime requires high fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis tools, due to the nonlinear behavior of the aerodynamics in the transonic regime and also high fidelity computational structural dynamics (CSD) analysis tools. Also, there is a need to be able to use a wide variety of CFD and CSD methods to predict aeroelastic effects. Since source codes are not always available, it is necessary to couple the CFD and CSD codes without alteration of the source codes. In this study, an aeroelastic coupling procedure is developed to determine the static aeroelastic response of aircraft wings using any CFD and CSD code with little code integration. The aeroelastic coupling procedure is demonstrated on an F/A-18 Stabilator using NASTD (an in-house McDonnell Douglas CFD code) and NASTRAN. In addition, the Aeroelastic Research Wing (ARW-2) is used for demonstration of the aeroelastic coupling procedure by using ENSAERO (NASA Ames Research Center CFD code) and a finite element wing-box code. The results obtained from the present study are compared with those available from an experimental study conducted at NASA Langley Research Center and a study conducted at NASA Ames Research Center using ENSAERO and modal superposition. The results compare well with experimental data.
