Book excerpt: "A Century of Wrong" is a historical novel. At the advent of the South African War (Second Anglo-Boer War), Francis William Reitz, in his capacity of State Secretary of the South African Republic, published an overview of Anglo-Boer relations in the nineteenth century in Dutch, under the title "A Century of Wrong". The book was an important propaganda document in the war. Reitz defends the Dutch from what he terms as wrong accusations of Dutch Boer brutality against the natives of the Transvaal Region. He in turn counters with a history of British aggression against the Dutch migrants in the South African Republic.

Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Wrong Briton against the Conservative Boer, and especially to advocate the Cause of the Reformers and Uitlanders against the old Tory Administration of President Kruger. By agitation, by pressure, and even, if need be, in the last resort by legitimate insurrection, I had always been ready to seek the establishment of a progressive Liberal Administration in Pretoria. And I have at least the small consolation of knowing that if any Of the movements which I defended had succeeded, the present crisis would never have arisen, and the in dependence Of the South African Republic would have been established on an unassailable basis. But with such a record it is Obvious that I was almost the last man in the Empire who could be regarded as an authorised exponent Of the case of the Boers. A housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with a German spy. . . . And two orphaned Russian brothers embark on radically different paths when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription, and revolution. From the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms of the mighty, Fall of Giants takes us into the inextricably entangled fates of five families—and into a century that we thought we knew, but that now will never seem the same again. . . .

Gloom is a prophecy that must be believed so that it will turn out wrong. Joffe [posits that] 'economic miracles' that propelled the rising tide of challengers flounder against their own limits.
