Book A Century of Great Actors 1750 1850 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Century of Great Actors 1750 1850 Classic Reprint written by Cecil Ferard Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Great Actors, 1750-1850 It is not easy to write about actors. There is danger if they are alive and the risk of dullness if they are dead. Few things apparently interest the average person more than a real live actor, and few things bore them more than a dead one! This is partly because too much attention is generally paid to the personality of the actor, but principally because his reign, like a king's, ceases when he dies - sometimes before. But we can read the history of that reign, and can, to a certain extent, tell what manner of man the king was. Moreover, we are, some of us, that is to say, naturally interested in those who have tended the sacred lamp of the drama and kept it burning for some definite period of time. Actors do leave foot-prints on the sands of time. Tradition keeps their memory green, traditional pieces of business are sometimes remembered when their originator is forgotten. Sometimes both are remembered and always associated. Macklin and his Shy lock are a living force in the drama to-day. Book Destroy the Copy Plaster Cast Collections in the 19th 20th Centuries

Download or read book Destroy the Copy Plaster Cast Collections in the 19th 20th Centuries written by Annetta Alexandridis and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-09-05 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on two international conferences held at Cornell University and the Freie Universität of Berlin in 2010 and 2015, this volume is the first ever to explicitly address the destruction of plaster cast collections of ancient Mediterranean and Western sculpture. Focusing on Europe, the Americas, and Japan, art historians, archaeologists and a literary scholar discuss how different museum and academic traditions – national as well as disciplinary –, notions of value and authenticity, or colonialism impacted the fate of collections. The texts offer detailed documentation of degrees of destruction by spectacular acts of defacement, demolition, discarding, or neglect. They also shed light on the accompanying discourses regarding aesthetic ideals, political ideologies, educational and scholarly practices, or race. With destruction being understood as a critical part of reception, the histories of cast collections defy the traditional, homogenous narrative of rise and decline. Their diverse histories provide critical evidence for rethinking the use and display of plaster cast collections in the contemporary moment.

Book Performing Knowledge 1750 1850

Download or read book Performing Knowledge 1750 1850 written by Mary Helen Dupree and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period between 1750 and 1850 was a time when knowledge and its modes of transmission were reconsidered and reworked in fundamental ways. Social and political transformations, such as the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution, went hand in hand with in new ways of viewing, sensing, and experiencing what was perceived to be a rapidly changing world. This volume brings together a range of essays that explore the performance of knowledge in the period from 1750 to 1850, in the broadest possible sense. The essays explore a wide variety of literary, theatrical, and scientific events staged during this period, including scientific demonstrations, philosophical lectures, theatrical performances, stage design, botany primers, musical publications, staged Schiller memorials, acoustic performances, and literary declamations. These events served as vital conduits for the larger process of generating, differentiating, and circulating knowledge. By unpacking the significance of performance and performativity for the creation and circulation of knowledge in Germany during this period, the volume makes an important contribution to interdisciplinary German cultural studies, performance studies, and the history of knowledge.

Book Structural Iron 1750 1850

Download or read book Structural Iron 1750 1850 written by R.J.M. Sutherland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the period when iron became the dominant ’high-technology’ material, increasingly taking over from timber and masonry. It was necessary for the engines and machines of the new industries, but equally vital for the vast civil engineering works which supported this industrialisation. It was these works - mills, warehouses, dockyards, and above all bridges - which so impressed the public in the early 19th century. The papers selected here trace the evolving structural uses of cast and wrought iron in frames and roofs for buildings, and look in particular at the development of bridge design and construction, in America, France, and Russia, as well as in Britain. They cover the processes of design and testing, and at the same time throw much light on the attitudes and careers of the engineers themselves.
