Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Education: Being a Concise History of the Rise and Progress of the Public Schools The rise and progress of public free schools in Providence is one of the most interesting and important features in its history, and the centennial year, so replete with patriotic memories, is a period eminently appropriate in which to place its educational story on record. In doing this the author has deemed it proper to bring into view the action of the town as early as 1663, and also the efforts of men on behalf of the common schools, whose enlarged ideas placed them in advance of the popular sentiment of the time. Their disinterested labors, though not immediately successful, prepared the way for the success of others who took up the work where they left it, and have secured for them an honored place among public benefactors. In the school were taught the Latin language, the Mathematics, and the rudiments of an English education. Though supported by funds derived from the Society of Friends, and under the exclusive direc tion of members of that society, it was open indiscriminate ly to individuals of all religious denominations and for more than sixty years, continued to be the only public place of instruction m the province. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Allegheny Century of Education: 1815 1915 With the approach of the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of Allegheny College, it seemed essential that an account of the experiences of the century should be prepared. The undertaking presented many difficulties. No previous history had ever been written. The Board of Trustees had long favored the publication of such a detailed work. In 1912 it gave official sanction to the author, the professor of history in Allegheny College, to issue the volume and appointed a committee of supervision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Pennsylvania, 1740-1893: The History of the University and Its Present Work The Wharton School and the School of American His tory represent each a new idea in American education. The former was founded as an experiment in the education of busi ness men, and as a preliminary to the law, journalism or public life and has eminently justified the foresight of its founder. It recognizes the need for a broader preparation than has usually been given in the fields just mentioned, especially that of gen eral business. The quality of work done in the school is best shown in two volumes, one on The Development of American Industries, prepared and published by the Class of 1891, and the valuable work on Philadelphia and its Government, which has just been published by the Class of 1893. The school's success is also seen in the places held by its graduates, and the high praise accorded it by such a body as the American Bankers' Association. The special Work of the school is done in the Junior and Senior years. An excellent library in economics, history, and public law is owned by the school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public-School System of the United States The material contained in this volume will consist of the most important of the data that I collected during a journey extending over a period of more than five months, made under the auspices of "The Forum," for the purpose of studying the public-school system of the United States. The facts presented in the first part of the present work do not vary materially from those presented in a series of articles recently published in that magazine. The matter contained in the second part, however, - the part devoted exclusively to the compositions written by the children and the drawings made by them, - appears here for the first time. In undertaking this journey it was my aim not only to learn what methods of instruction were commonly followed in our country, and the general condition of our schools, but also to investigate the manner in which the schools of different cities were managed. Book The Public Schools in the United States of America Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Public Schools in the United States of America Classic Reprint written by Edward E. Sheib and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Schools in the United States of America In modern times the ideas of popular Education have Sprung up as necessities. But these ideas, to a great ex tent, have been transplanted from the countries of Europe to the United States of America, hardly differently from the manner in which the Secondary School was introdu ced, the history of which extends back to the beginning of civilization in Europe. Yet the schools of Europe have gradually assumed a character, so peculiar to the different nations, that it is easy to know the German from the French or English institution. And still, though it is true that the nature of educational institutions is certainly determined to a great extent by nationality, social and political interests and the standard of civilization which has been reached by each particular nation, nevertheless the achievements of one nation in the department of education like the re searches of science, cannot long remain unknown to others. And for that reason, despite their national peculiarities, we find that the schools of all European countries have much in common, and that the fundamental ideas pervading those of England, France, Germany and Switzerland are at the present day much the same. That the results' which are achieved in the different countries are so dissimilar is ow ing to two things: Knowledge or ignorance of the best methods and the skill or deficiency of the instructors. Book The Development of Free Schools in the United States

Download or read book The Development of Free Schools in the United States written by Arthur Raymond Mead and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Free, Schools in the United States: As Illustrated By, Connecticut and Michigan The schools of Connecticut became free in the last half of the nineteenth century, but to understand the development of such schools it is helpful to consider some conditions of colonial edu cation, and to trace the slow growth of the movement and related movements to the time of the enactment of the free school law of 1868. The colonial period, from 1634 to 1776, a period of one hundred and forty-two years, was a time in which European traditions were transplanted, and also gradually modified. Some very important social changes occurred in Connecticut during this period. The colonists of Connecticut came, for the most part, from Massachusetts and were very similar in character and antecedents to the people of that colony. At New Haven and Hartford, settlements were made which had separate govern ments, and between which a rivalry appeared. The two were united under a royal charter in 1665. The government was similar, in many respects, to that of Massachusetts. At first, the town was the unit of local government. The general control was exercised by the General Court and governor, under the charter and a rather peculiar constitution. The General Court was an elective body, based upon a limited suffrage, having a combination Of legislative, executive, and judicial powers. Religiously, the Connecticut colonists were Puritans. The church and civil government were united in many ways. The early pursuits were, of necessity, hunting and agriculture, but soon a coastwise trade grew up, and primitive manufactures appeared. The times were not peaceful. Indian wars, and the European wars of parent nations brought to the settler of Con necticut a share of the common burdens of the period.
