Download or read book A Century of Birmingham Life Vol 2 written by John Alfred Langford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-27 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Birmingham Life, Vol. 2: Or a Chronicle of Local Events, From 1741 HE success which has attended the publication of the first volume of this work has far exceeded my most sanguine expectations. The cordial manner in which the press has reviewed the book has greatly cheered and encouraged me in the preparation of the second volume. The life of Birmingham since the year 184o - the time at which these annals close - has been one of great activity and interest; which, at some future time, I hope to narrate. The relation of the modern life of the town would require a mode of treatment different from that which has been found so acceptable in the present work. It would not be necessary, nor desirable, to reproduce the reprints and extracts from the newspapers with the same copiousness; but to give the results in a consecutive and more compressed form. Should I live, it is my intention so to complete the story of Birmingham life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book New Directions in Local History Since Hoskins

Download or read book New Directions in Local History Since Hoskins written by Christopher Dyer and published by Univ of Hertfordshire Press. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilizing the techniques developed by renowned local historian W. G. Hoskins in his landmark study published 50 years ago, "Local History in England," this book demonstrates how local history has evolved as a discipline over the last half century. Fifteen historians write about a variety of local history subjects that are significant in their own right but which also point to current trends in the field. They show how local historians use their sources systematically, from the nonverbal evidence of buildings to various types of electronic sources. All periods between the middle ages and the early twenty-first century are explored, covering many parts of England from Skye to the Kent coast and discussing topics that include social, economic, religious, legal, intellectual, and cultural history.

Book Napoleon and British Song 1797 1822

Download or read book Napoleon and British Song 1797 1822 written by Oskar Cox Jensen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers a radical reassessment of a crucial period of political and cultural history. By looking at some 400 songs, many of which are made available to hear, and at their writers, singers, and audiences, it questions both our relationship with song, and ordinary Britons' relationship with Napoleon, the war, and the idea of Britain itself.
