Book Vanderbilt Free Electron Laser Center for Research in Surgery Medicine Photobiology and Materials Science

Download or read book Vanderbilt Free Electron Laser Center for Research in Surgery Medicine Photobiology and Materials Science written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This program is designed to explore the militarily-relevant medical applications of high-power, tunable infrared radiation available from unique accelerator-based light sources, the Mark Ill FEL, the monochromatic X-ray system, and a new Smith-Purcell THz FEL. As applications mature, we also develop cost-efficient, dedicated systems to expand the use of these applications beyond the FEL Center. During the last funding period, we have developed a comprehensive research program directed towards a thorough understanding of militarily-relevant laser medicine applications. These studies involve substantial collaborations with all the other FEL centers: dermatology with the Wellman Laboratories, infection and cancer diagnosis with Stanford, bone and cartilage ablation with UC Irvine, neurosurgery with Duke. Since the Vanderbilt center has the only FEL that is coupled to an FDA-approved human operating rooms, all FEL clinical applications developed within the MFEL program are carried out at Vanderbilt. In particular, our researchers have concentrated on the development of three new surgical approaches using the FEL, 1) decrease of wound healing and scar minimization, 2) ophthalmological surgery in the back of the eye without removing the eye from the socket, and 3) laser-based non-contact nerve stimulation.

Book The Vanderbilt University Free Electron Laser Center

Book excerpt: Vanderbilt University has established a multidisciplinary Free-Electron Laser Center to exploit the opportunities made possible by the free-electron laser for applications in medicine, biology, materials science, and other fields of research. The free-electron laser, which recently began operation, is tunable over the wavelength range from 2 to 10 pim. The device has demonstrated 400 mJ per pulse at a wavelength of 4.8 um, in 6-?is pulses, and an average power of II W at a repetition rate of 30 Hz. Extensions to the X-ray and far-infrared regions are underway. The Center, which will be used by researchers from within the University and from around the world, has already given birth to a variety of interdisciplinary collaborations among scientists brought together by the unique opportunities provided by the Center.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 22nd International Free Electron Laser Conference and 7th FEL User Workshop were held August 13-18, 2000 at Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina, USA. The conference and the workshop were hosted by Duke University's Free Electron laser (FEL) Laboratory. Following tradition, the FEL prize award was announced at the banquet. The year 2000 FEL prize was awarded to three scientists propelling the limits of high power FELs: Steven Benson, Eisuke Minehara and George Neill. The conference program was comprised of traditional oral sessions on First Lasing, FEL theory, storage ring FELs, linac and high power FELs, long wavelength FELs, SASE FELs, accelerator and FEL physics and technology, and new developments and proposals. Two sessions on accelerator and FEL physics and technology reflected the emphasis on the high quality of accelerators and components for modern FELs. The breadth of the applications was presented in the workshop oral sessions on materials processing, biomedical and surgical applications, physics and chemistry as well as on instrumentation and methods for FEL applications. A special oral session was dedicated to FEL center status reports for users to learn more about the opportunities with FELs. As usual, the oral sessions were supplemented by poster sessions with in-depth discussions and communications. The FEL physicists and FEL users had excellent opportunities to interact throughout the duration of the event, culminating a Joint Sessions. The year 2000 was very successful being marked by lasing with two SASE and one storage ring short-wavelength FELs, and by the first human surgery with the use of FEL, to mention but a few. The International Program Committee and chairs of the sessions had the challenging and exciting problem of selecting invived and contributed talks for the conferences and the workshop from the influx of abstracts mentioning new results and ideas. The success of the conference was determined by these contributions. Scientists from 15 countries gave 70 talks, presented 176 posters and submitted 146 papers, which are published in the present volume of proceedings.

Book Midsize Facilities

Download or read book Midsize Facilities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-04-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the instruments now used for materials research are too complex and expensive for individual investigators to own, operate, and maintain them. Consequently, they have become increasingly consolidated into multi-user, small to midsized research facilities, located at many sites around the country. The proliferation of these facilities, however, has drawn calls for a careful assessment of best principles for their operation. With support from the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, the NRC carried out a study to characterize and discuss ways to optimize investments in materials research facility infrastructure with attention to midsize facilities. This report provides an assessment of the nature and importance of mid-sized facilities, their capabilities, challenges they face, current investment, and optimizing their effectiveness.

Book Handbook of Laser Technology and Applications

Download or read book Handbook of Laser Technology and Applications written by Colin Webb and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 1183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The invention of the laser was one of the towering achievements of the twentieth century. At the opening of the twenty-first century we are witnessing the burgeoning of the myriad technical innovations to which that invention has led. The Handbook of Laser Technology and Applications is a practical and long-lasting reference source for scientists and engineers who work with lasers. The Handbook provides, a comprehensive guide to the current status of lasers and laser systems; it is accessible to science or engineering graduates needing no more than standard undergraduate knowledge of optics. Whilst being a self-contained reference work, the Handbook provides extensive references to contemporary work, and is a basis for studying the professional journal literature on the subject. It covers applications through detailed case studies, and is therefore well suited to readers who wish to use it to solve specific problems of their own. The first of the three volumes comprises an introduction to the basic scientific principles of lasers, laser beams and non-linear optics. The second volume describes the mechanisms and operating characteristics of specific types of laser including crystalline solid - state lasers, semiconductor diode lasers, fibre lasers, gas lasers, chemical lasers, dye lasers and many others as well as detailing the optical and electronic components which tailor the laser's performance and beam delivery systems. The third volume is devoted to case studies of applications in a wide range of subjects including materials processing, optical measurement techniques, medicine, telecommunications, data storage, spectroscopy, earth sciences and astronomy, and plasma fusion research. This vast compendium of knowledge on laser science and technology is the work of over 130 international experts, many of whom are recognised as the world leaders in their respective fields. Whether the reader is engaged in the science, technology, industrial or medical applications of lasers or is researching the subject as a manager or investor in technical enterprises they cannot fail to be informed and enlightened by the wide range of information the Handbook supplies.
