Download or read book Arthur Symons written by Roger Holdsworth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur William Symons (1865-1945) is a haunting poet of the modern city, catching its dangerous, complex beauty in works that first introduced the imagery of the urban underworld into English poetry. He was a champion of the French Symbolists. Yeats, Pound and Eliot acknowledged their debt to him and were influenced by his sense of the city as the essential landscape of modernity. As a poet and critic, in his own right, though, Symons has come into his own in recent years. This selection is taken from the full range of Symons' poetry and prose, revealing an experimental writer exploring art, literature and music. Roger Holdsworth's introduction sets Symons in his context as both an 1890s Decadent and a precursor of Modernism.

Download or read book From Lisbon to the World written by George Monteiro and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fernando Pessoa is one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. Until some years ago known in the English-speaking world only among a minority of connaisseurs, his work is finally becoming available in English translations, and more are in the process of reaching the literary public. Born in Lisbon in 1888, Pessoa was only forty-seven when he died, but he left behind a staggering number of unpublished manuscripts that are still being screened and brought to light. George Steiner heralded the day Pessoa discovered his major Portuguese heteronyms, for no country had ever seen the birth of four great poets in a single day. That was a reference to the personae Pessoa created, the famous heteronyms Alberto Caeiro, Alvaro de Campos, and Ricardo Reis, besides the man himself -- all poets in their own right with their biographies and even critical exchanges among themselves. Today well over a hundred Pessoa heteronyms are known, including, notably, the semi-heteronym Bernardo Soares, author of The Book of Disquiet, presently available in two English translations. Lately, another Pessoa is emerging -- an English writer, as well as a thinker. Indeed, having been educated in Durban, South Africa, where his stepfather was the consul of Portugal, the poet had a strong English education that shaped his life and thought. George Monteiro has been in the forefront of the uncovering of this side of Pessoa. Author, among many other works, of The Presence of Pessoa: English, American, and Southern African Literary Responses, and Fernando Pessoa and Nineteenth-Century Anglo-American Literature, in this volume Monteiro continues to explore and interpret the world of Pessoa to English-speaking readers.

Download or read book The Odes of Horace written by Horace and published by Carcanet Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first rigorously metrical translation of Horace’s classic work in many years, this collection combines a staunch respect for the meaning of the Latin verse, which appears on facing pages, with an ebullient sense of these varied poems as works in English. A line-for-line rendition that finds English equivalents for the original quantitative meters, the volume captures both the tenderness and occasional irascibility of the great Augustan poet. The book also contains useful end notes for those wishing to better understand Horace’s allusions and mythological proper names.

Hell and After contains substantial selections of the work of McNamara (1811-1880), and three poets from the second half of the nineteenth century. The social reformer Mary Gilmore (1865-1962) grew up in the bush and her poems are vivid evocations of colonial life. John Shaw Neilson (1872-1942), a poet of great lyricism and humour, spent most of his life in poverty as a manual labourer, and Lesbia Harford (1891-1927), was a radical activist who worked as a factory machinist and servant."--BOOK JACKET.
