Book Theatre and Cartographies of Power

Download or read book Theatre and Cartographies of Power written by Analola Santana and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the colonial period to independence and into the twenty-first century, Latin American culture has been mapped as a subordinate “other” to Europe and the United States. This collection reconsiders geographical space and power and the ways in which theatrical and performance histories have been constructed throughout the Americas. Essays bridge political, racial, gender, class, and national divides that have traditionally restricted and distorted our understanding of Latin American theatre and performance. Contributors—scholars and artists from throughout the Americas, including well-known playwrights, directors, and performers—imagine how to reposition the Latina/o Americas in ways that offer agency to its multiple peoples, cultures, and histories. In addition, they explore the ways artists can create new maps and methods for their creative visions. Building on hemispheric and transnational models, this book demonstrates the capacity of theatre studies to challenge the up-down/North-South approach that dominates scholarship in the United States and presents a strong case for a repositioning of the Latina/o Americas in theatrical histories and practices.

Book Art Creativity and Politics in Africa and the Diaspora

Download or read book Art Creativity and Politics in Africa and the Diaspora written by Abimbola Adelakun and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the politics of artistic creativity, examining how black artists in Africa and the diaspora create art as a procedure of self-making. Essays cross continents to uncover the efflorescence of black culture in national and global contexts and in literature, film, performance, music, and visual art. Contributors place the concerns of black artists and their works within national and transnational conversations on anti-black racism, xenophobia, ethnocentrism, migration, resettlement, resistance, and transnational feminisms. Does art by the subaltern fulfill the liberatory potential that critics have ascribed to it? What other possibilities does political art offer? Together, these essays sort through the aesthetics of daily life to build a thesis that reflects the desire of black artists and cultures to remake themselves and their world.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Greek Drama in the Americas

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Greek Drama in the Americas written by Kathryn Bosher and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 1047 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Greek Drama in the Americas is the first edited collection to discuss the performance of Greek drama across the continents and archipelagos of the Americas from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present. The study and interpretation of the classics have never been restricted by geographical or linguistic boundaries but, in the case of the Americas, long colonial histories have often imposed such boundaries arbitrarily. This volume tracks networks across continents and oceans and uncovers the ways in which the shared histories and practices in the performance arts in the Americas have routinely defied national boundaries. With contributions from classicists, Latin American specialists, theatre and performance theorists, and historians, the Handbook also includes interviews with key writers, including Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott, Charles Mee, and Anne Carson, and leading theatre directors such as Peter Sellars, Carey Perloff, H?ctor Daniel-Levy, and Heron Coelho. This richly illustrated volume seeks to define the complex contours of the reception of Greek drama in the Americas, and to articulate how these different engagements - at local, national, or trans-continental levels, as well as across borders - have been distinct both from each other, and from those of Europe and Asia.

Book Visualizing Black Lives

Download or read book Visualizing Black Lives written by Reighan Gillam and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new generation of Afro-Brazilian media producers have emerged to challenge a mainstream that frequently excludes them. Reighan Gillam delves into the dynamic alternative media landscape developed by Afro-Brazilians in the twenty-first century. With works that confront racism and focus on Black characters, these artists and the visual media they create identify, challenge, or break with entrenched racist practices, ideologies, and structures. Gillam looks at a cross-section of media to show the ways Afro-Brazilians assert control over various means of representation in order to present a complex Black humanity. These images--so at odds with the mainstream--contribute to an anti-racist visual politics fighting to change how Brazilian media depicts Black people while highlighting the importance of media in the movement for Black inclusion. An eye-opening union of analysis and fieldwork, Visualizing Black Lives examines the alternative and activist Black media and the people creating it in today's Brazil.

Book Between Brown and Black

    Book Details:
  • Author : Antonio José Bacelar da Silva
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2022-06-17
  • ISBN : 1978808542
  • Pages : 197 pages

Download or read book Between Brown and Black written by Antonio José Bacelar da Silva and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-17 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With new momentum, the Brazilian black movement is working to bring attention to and change the situation of structural racism in Brazil. Black consciousness advocates are challenging Afro-Brazilians to define themselves and politically organize around being black, and more Afro-Brazilians are increasingly doing so. Other segments of the Brazilian black movement are working to influence legislation and implement formal mechanisms that aim to promote racial equality, including Affirmative Action Racial Verification Committees. For advocates of these committees, one needs to be phenotypically black enough to be a more likely target of racism to qualify for Affirmative Action programs. Paradoxically, individuals are told to identify as black but only some people are considered black enough to benefit from these policies. Afro-Brazilians are presented with a whole range of identity choices, from how to classify oneself, to whether one votes for political candidates based on shared racial experiences. Between Brown and Black argues that Afro-Brazilian activists’ continued exploration of blackness confronts anti-blackness while complicating understandings of what it means to be black. Blending linguistic and ethnographic accounts, this book raises complex questions about current black struggles in Brazil and beyond, including the black movements’ political initiatives and antiracist agenda.

Book Receptions of the Classics in the African Diaspora of the Hispanophone and Lusophone Worlds

Download or read book Receptions of the Classics in the African Diaspora of the Hispanophone and Lusophone Worlds written by Elisa Rizo and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlantis Otherwise expands the study of the African diaspora by focusing on postcolonial literary expressions from Latin America and Africa. The book studies the presence of classical references in texts written by writers (black and non-black) who are committed to the articulation of the fragmented history of the African experience from the Middle Passage to the present outside of Euro-centric views. Consequently, this book addresses the silencing of the African Diaspora within the official discourses of Latin America and Hispanic Africa, as well as the limitations that linguistic and geographic boundaries have imposed upon scholarship. The contributors address questions related to the categories of race and cultural identity by analyzing a diverse body of Afro-Latin American and Afro-Hispanic receptions of classical literature and its imaginaries. Literary texts in Spanish and Portuguese written in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, and Equatorial Guinea provide the opportunity for a transnational and trans-linguistic examination of the use of classical tropes and themes in twentieth-century drama, fiction, folklore studies, and narrative.

Book Speedlights Speedlites

Download or read book Speedlights Speedlites written by Lou Jones and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canon Speedlites and Nikon Speedlights are small, off-camera flashguns that can provide big results - if you know how to use them properly. Acclaimed Boston photographers Lou Jones, Bob Keenan and Steve Ostrowski guide you through the technical and creative aspects of how to get the most out of these powerful tools in this indispensable guide, packed full of inspirational images and comprehensive diagrams of the lighting set ups used to capture them. They are significantly more advanced, lighter and considerably cheaper than a standard flashgun, and have many advantages. They are small (and cheap) enough that a number can be carried in your kit, and they can be used in combination, triggered wirelessly. They use through-the-lens (TTL) metering, which allows you to use the in-camera LCD and histograms to calculate the required power/direction, rather than havng to use a light meter or trial and error. They use proprietary, dedicated technology (from Canon and Nikon) that means there are no compatability issues. Getting the most out of them, however, remains a mystery - most photographers still just use their speedlights in the same way as a standard flash gun. This is where this book comes in.

Book La Sombra del Egombe egombe

Download or read book La Sombra del Egombe egombe written by Gudea de Lagash and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 903 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book La Sombra del Baron written by Lavayén Lavayén and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005-05-27 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memoir uncovers truth about effects of ghost story and family dynamic in Argentine Childhood The transition from childhood to adulthood is difficult no matter what the circumstances. When more stress is added from societal and familial pressures, that transition is even shorter and harsher. The Shadow of the Baron by American-Argentinian author Laura Lavayén is a memoir of her childhood in Argentina, living on the land of a deceased landholder. The Baron was a fanatic and kept repeating that, if Germany lost the war, he would commit suicide. He did. The Baron starved to death after destroying all his belongings brought from Germany. The only things left, very close to Laura's home, were a pine tree – also brought from Germany – and his grave surrounded by an iron railing. Soon after the Baron's death, people said that his spirit wandered in the area. It is in this environment that the memoir begins, before quickly moving into the difficult childhood that fills the book. Lavayén’s memories of her older half-sister, Caty, a mentally handicapped girl who died very young, her gaucho father who was a storyteller and she loved dearly, and stories of scarcity and lack of understanding, mainly from her mother who never agreed with her behavior, flavor much of the text. The old ranch where the family lived was in the outskirts of beautiful Bariloche. Not far from the place where she used to play with her brothers and sisters, they found broken remains from the former inhabitants in the area, or so they thought. Later on, they learned that they had belonged to the German Baron Ludwig von Bulow. His spirit wandering in the area was a recurring nightmare for Laura…
