The currently available analytical methods (both physicochemical and biological) can characterize the primary, secondary and to some extent, the higher order structure of proteins. The sensitivity and selectivity of these methods allow for the identification and characterization not only of the desired protein component, but also many product-related substances and impurities as well as process-related impurities present in the drug preparations. Using an appropriate selection of analytical tools, it may be possible to demonstrate physicochemical and functional comparability between protein products manufactured before and after a manufacturing change or during product development. However, the extent of demonstrable comparability depends on the tests used, on the nature of the product and on the basic understanding of structure-function relationships. Assessment of immunogenicity is also a critical component of product characterization and is highly dependent on the types of assays used.

This OIE Global Conference on Aquatic Animal Health was an opportunity for the OIE and its Member Countries to help build a framework for improved involvement and cooperation between the authorities (Veterinary and Fish Health, Fisheries and Environment), the scientific community and the private sector on aquatic animal health and welfare; help clarify the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders in the process of early disease detection, rapid response and reporting; help increase aquatic animal health emergency response capabilities; exchange information on emerging diseases and animal welfare issues; help develop a science-based approach to the management of aquatic animal health and welfare; and present the valuable experience gained in the past few years. Following the presentations and discussions, recommendations were developed to better define roles and responsibilities and to assist in the evaluation and improvement of the current standards and guidelines for better control of infectious aquatic animal health, and the preparedness of countries for aquatic animal disease emergencies.

It now seems important to re-examine this hypothesis. Knowledge of the mechanisms of acquired influenza immunity and correlations with measurable laboratory parameters is clearly of importance in understanding influenza epidemiology and vaccine-induced immunity. While immunity is certainly multi-factorial, involving both B and T cell responses, any comprehensive assessment is complicated by the capacity of the virus to undergo extensive and frequent antigenic variation. The aim of this workshop was to review the methods available for assessing immune responses and their advantages and disadvantages; to present information on immune responses to the various vaccine types and attempt to draw possible conclusions on their value in assessing protective immunity; to address the question of standardization and validation of assays and the appropriate use of reference materials; to identify appropriate themes for international collaborative studies.
