Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Custer found himself in the one dilemma all soldiers most dread-he was outnumbered and completely surrounded. With disaster looming in every quarter and no chance of escape. . . ." So Gregory J. W Urwin pulls the reader into a scene describing not the Battle of the Little Big Horn but a Civil War engagement that George Armstrong Custer and his troop survived, thanks to strategy as much as naked courage. Many books have focused on Custer's Last Stand in 1876, making legend of total defeat. Custer Victorious is the first to examine at length, with attention to primary sources, his brilliant Civil War career. Urwin writes: "None of Custer's exploits against the Plains Indians could compare with those he performed while with the Army of the Potomac." The leader of a brigade called "the Wolverines," Custer was promoted to major general and the helm of the Third Cavalry Division when he was only twenty-four. Urwin describes the Boy General's vital contributions to Union victories from Gettysburg to Appomattox. Gregory J. W Urwin, an associate professor of history at the University of Central Arkansas, has written a new preface for this Bison Book edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of a Cavalryman: With Custer's Michigan Cavalry Brigade in the Civil War In preparing this book it has not been the purpose of the author to write a complete historical sketch of the Michigan cavalry brigade. Such a history would require a volume as large for the record of each regi ment; and, even then, it would fall short of doing jus tice to the patriotic services of that superb organiza tion. The narrative contained in the following pages is a story of the personal recollections of one of the troopers who rode with Custer, and played a part small it is true, but still a part - in the tragedy of the civil war. As such it is modestly put forth, with the hope that it may prove to be an interesting story to those who read it The author also trusts that it may contribute something, albeit but a little, toward giving Custer's Michigan cavalrymen the place in the history of their country which they so richly earned on many fields. Book excerpt: The narrative contained in the pages of this book is a story of the personal recollections of one of the troopers who rode with Custer, and played a part in the tragedy of the civil war. As such it is modestly put forth, with the hope that it may prove to be "an interesting story" to those who read it. The author also trusts that it may contribute something, albeit but a little, toward giving Custer's Michigan cavalrymen the place in the history of their country which they so richly earned on many fields. While memory has been the principal guide, the strict historical truth has been sought and, when there appeared to be a reasonable doubt, the official records have been consulted, and the writings of others freely drawn upon to verify these "recollections." . The Roll of Honor -- a list of all those who were killed in action, or who died of wounds received in action -- is as complete as it was possible to make it from the official records. In a very few cases, men who were reported "missing in action," and of whom no further record could be found, were assumed to have belonged in the list, but these are not numerous enough to materially affect the totals. For the rest, the author cannot claim that he has done justice to either of these organizations, but he has made an honest effort to be fair and impartial, to tell the truth as he saw it, without prejudice. How well he has succeeded is not for him to say. "It is an interesting story," said an officer who served with distinction in the Fifth Michigan cavalry. If that shall be the verdict of all the comrades who read it, the writer will be satisfied. A completely new reprint of the original 1908 edition, this Our Civil War Press book has been edited and printed in a clear, crisp typeface for easy reading.

This book was released on 2016-11-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition is expanded and annotated.Envision 10,000 mounted men of one of the best cavalries the world has ever produced strung out along 13 miles, marching around Robert E. Lee's right flank, taunting J.E.B. Stuart to come out and fight. In one of the most thrilling and detailed accounts of one of the most important battles of the American Civil War that most people know nothing of, James Kidd tells this story and much more of the Michigan Wolverine Cavalry under the command of George Armstrong Custer. The popular image of General Custer, James Kidd wrote in 1908, is incorrect. He was not reckless or wasteful of men.The battle was Yellow Tavern, part of the Spottslyvania fight, and Phil Sheridan later said he believed it was the greatest cavalry engagement of the Civil War. J.E.B. Stuart was fatally wounded in the fight. At Gettysburg, Brandy Station, the Trevillian Raid, Kilpatrick's Richmond raid, and the Shennandoah Valley, the Wolverines played a crucial role in the Union victory.Kidd also provides wonderful details about the movement of large cavalry units, especially when they must be turned in battle. In one of the best-written memoirs of the Civil War, Kidd has presented a picture of the Michigan Cavalry and its unforgettable leader that helps complete the image of Custer as a soldier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riding with Custer is a rousing and vivid illustration of the tactical worth of cavalry in the army. Captain James H. Kidd raised his own company, engaged in more than sixty battles, rose to colonel in 1864, and after conspicuous valor in the Valley campaign of that year succeeded Custer as commander of the Michigan Brigade. When he wrote these memoirs several decades after the war, his recollections were sharp and indelible--among them the experience of fighting with Custer at Gettysburg, Falling Waters, the Wilderness, Yellow tavern, and Cedar Creek. He describes life on the move in all kinds of weather and terrain, the sensation of combat, the pleasure of a cup of coffee, and, besides Custer, such famous generals as Judson Kilpatrick, Phil Sheridan and Wesley Merritt.
