Book Teacher Turnover and Student Academic Achievement

Download or read book Teacher Turnover and Student Academic Achievement written by Elvi Benitez-Mackintosh and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For at least six decades teacher turnover has been a major educational problem. Further, teacher turnover has been shown to have a negative effect on student academic achievement. This study was conducted to better understand the impact of teacher turnover on the academic achievement of students at the individual school level. Specifically, this study examined state mandated performance data, district Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments, and teacher assignment data for a Southern California elementary school over six years. The study sought to determine if there was a negative relationship between the number of new teachers assigned to fifth-grade students who had been enrolled at a Turnaround school for the 2010 through 2015 academic years and their academic achievement in reading and mathematics as measured by the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments and the California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) or California Assessment of Students Performance and Progress (CAASPP) assessments. The researcher obtained MAP language arts and mathematics scores for 85 fifth graders who had attended the school for at least five years. In addition, the researcher collected students' enrollment data to determine the number of first and second year teachers they had from Kindergarten through fifth grade. Analysis for the MAP data revealed that the group of students who had three or more new teachers experienced noticeable (i.e., a few points) but not statistically significant lower mean performance scores in both language arts and math. However, for the STAR and CAASP data, there was a statistically significant negative correlation between the number of new teachers and students' performance. Implications of these findings for this and other schools experiencing high teacher turnover are discussed and suggestions for teacher support are provided.

  • Pages : 42 pages

Download or read book Teacher Turnover written by Marcela Guerrero and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basis of this project is to explore the reasons behind teacher turnover rates in nonprofit charter schools in California. Turnover rates for teachers in nonprofit charter schools are higher than those in traditional district schools. Research suggests that besides monetary reasons, some of the deciding factors that cause teachers to leave their current assignment are workload and administrative relationships, ethnic or racial mismatches, and age and experience. Nonprofit charter school management is often setup using a bureaucratic hierarchy. Using Weber's theories on bureaucracy for comparison and evaluation of these organizations structures and procedures, in-depth insights could be provided as to why these turnover decisions are higher for these nonprofit charter school organizations as opposed to a traditional district organization.

Book Beyond Retention

Download or read book Beyond Retention written by Catherine George and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document reports findings of a California Department of Education (DOE) study that examined grade-retention practices in the state. Data were collected primarily through surveys of schools and school districts. Findings indicate that approximately 1 in 10 students spent an extra year in school before second grade during the 1988-89 school year. In kindergarten and first grade, the retention rates for African-Americans and Hispanics were up to double the rate for whites. The most common treatment for retained students was grade repetition. Despite research findings to the contrary, most educators believed that retention was effective. Many educators used Light's Retention Scale, an instrument that lacks reliability and validity in identifying students for retention. The following alternatives to retention are identified--dissemination of research, developmentally appropriate instruction, the Reading Recovery Program, other intervention programs, the Success for All Program, and structural changes (such as combination classes, year-round education, and ungraded schools). Several recommendations are offered to reduce the statewide retention rate: (1) School districts and schools should examine their policies and practices in light of current research; (2) school districts and schools should disseminate research on retention to elementary and middle school staffs; (3) school districts with high retention rates should develop a plan to reduce the rate and improve the instructional program for at-risk students; (4) school districts should monitor the differential effects of retention for different ethnic groups, non-English-speaking children, and boys and girls; and (5) the DOE and state legislature should provide support to school districts to implement early intervention reading programs. Two figures are included. (LMI)

Book Factors Impacting Catholic School Teacher Turnover Including Alternative Teacher Certification

Download or read book Factors Impacting Catholic School Teacher Turnover Including Alternative Teacher Certification written by Elizabeth Youngs and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation study was to examine the factors that impact Catholic school teacher turnover with special attention to alternative route to teacher certification. Teacher turnover has a negative impact on the school organization economically, and a negative effect on student success. Factors tested in this study as having an impact on teacher turnover, in addition to route to certification or licensure, include teacher characteristics, school characteristics, and working conditions. The study also compared the percentage of teacher turnover in the Archdiocese of Denver Catholic Schools to national teacher turnover statics, and factors that impact teacher turnover locally with national trends. Teachers new to the Archdiocese of Denver Catholic Schools between 2001 and 2006 were the focus for this study. Data were obtained from 284 current and former Archdiocese of Denver Catholic Schools teachers through a 55-item survey developed by the researcher. The survey was modeled on the National Center for Educational Statistics Teacher Follow-up Survey which also provided the national numbers for comparison in this study. Regression analyses and Chi-square tests were used to determine which of the factors might be predictive of teacher retention or attrition. The findings of this study show that for the six-year period studied, alternatively certified beginning teachers had the same as or a higher percentage of retention than traditionally certified beginning teachers. Findings also show that family circumstances, size of the school, and the diversity of student ethnicity are the factors that are most predictive of teacher attrition or retention. The age of the teacher and the lack of evidence of student service in support of Catholic social justice teachings were the next most significant factors predicting teacher turnover. The study shows that teachers are more likely to continue teaching in Archdiocese of Denver Catholic Schools when the evidence of the Catholic identity indicators matches the importance placed on that indicator by the teacher. The results of this dissertation study extend the research on teacher retention and have implications for school principals who hire teachers in Catholic schools, for archdiocesan superintendents, and institutions of higher education that train teachers.
