Book An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform A L

Download or read book An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform A L written by Christopher Hoolihan and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of rare books dealing with "popular medicine" in early America which is housed at the University of Rochester Medical School library. The books described in the catalogue were written by physicians and other professionals to provide information for the non-medical audience. The books taught human anatomy, hygiene, temperance and diet, how to maintain health, and how to cope with illness especially when no professional help was available. The books promoted a healthy lifestyle for the readers, giving guidance on everything from physical fitness and recreation to the special health needs of women. The collection consists of works dealing with reproduction [from birth control to delivering and caring for a baby], venereal disease, home-nursing, epidemics, and the need for public sex education. These books, covering areas largely ignored by the medical profession, made important contributions to the health of the American public, and the collection is a vital piece of medical history. The collector is Edward C. Atwater, Professor Emeritus of Medicine and the History of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical School. Christopher Hoolihan is History of Medicine Librarian at the University of Rochester Medical School's Edward G. Miner LIbrary.

Book The Ingalls Wilder Family Songbook

Download or read book The Ingalls Wilder Family Songbook written by Dale Cockrell and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: URL: https://www.areditions.com/rr/rra/a071.html The eight Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867¿1957), anchored in her family¿s history and filled with memories of frontier life, are cornerstone classics in American children¿s literature. Embedded in them are citations to 127 pieces of music--from parlor songs, stage songs, minstrel show songs, patriotic songs, Scottish and Irish songs, hymns and spirituals, to fiddle tunes, singing school songs, play party songs, folk songs, broadside ballads, catches and rounds. No books in American literature of comparable standing and popularity feature America¿s vernacular music so centrally, assign it such a major narrative role, and index it in such rich abundance. This edition is a reconstruction of "the family songbook," based on the music referenced in Wilder¿s books. Although no such object ever existed, her representations of music-making have likely informed the imaginations of more Americans than many a paper-and-bindings anthology, for what millions of readers have come to know about America¿s musical heritage is what they learned from the Little House books¿the titles and lyrics to songs; how songs and tunes functioned; where they were heard; what they meant; the importance of music to individuals, families, and communities. Wilder¿s references and her evocative images of music-making thus form the basis of understanding about "American music" to many readers. The Ingalls Wilder Family Songbook is an effort to give fresh voice and sound to the music inscribed in these great books and new appreciation about how music functioned during a place and time important in American history and mythology.

Book All s Well that Ends Well Annotated with Biography and Critical Essay

Download or read book All s Well that Ends Well Annotated with Biography and Critical Essay written by William Shakespeare and published by Golgotha Press. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All’s Well that Ends Well was written circa 1604 and was the first of a series of plays that Shakespeare wrote mixing humor and pathos. The play may have been a comment on a situation that was being debated in Parliament at the time – that the King could control the property of a nobleman who inherited his title before he turned twenty-one. The plot of the play revolves around Helen, the orphaned daughter of a doctor, who has helped cure the King of France. He had promised her if she could cure him, she could have any man she wanted as her husband. Helen asks him if she could marry Bertram, the Count of Rossillion, whom she is in love with. The Count is considerably above her in station, and the King agrees to the marriage, but with great reluctance. Bertram is unhappy about the whole situation, and soon after the wedding, he leaves for war in Italy, the marriage unconsummated. He is accompanied by, Parolles, who is a bit of an opportunist although Bertram thinks he is a true friend. He later betrays Bertram. This annotated edition includes a biography and critical essay.

Book Macbeth Annotated with Biography and Critical Essay

Download or read book Macbeth Annotated with Biography and Critical Essay written by William Shakespeare and published by BookCaps Study Guides. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although MacBeth is classified as a tragedy in Shakespeare’s canon of work, it is also a history play based upon true events in Scotland’s past. Shakespeare’s source of information was Raphael Holinshead’s Chronicles. The playwright was undoubtedly inspired to construct a Scottish plot by the arrival on the English throne of King James I. James was also heir to the throne of Scotland, through his mother Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary had been executed for conspiracy by her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. Shakespeare probably felt a little flattery of the king might go a long way – King James was a descendant of the real life Banquo. Shakespeare sought to please by celebrating the return of the rightful Scottish king (Malcolm) at the end of the play. MacBeth is referred to as “The Scottish Play” and is considered somewhat unlucky in theatre circles. Shakespeare used magic devices (such as witches and apparitions) in MacBeth, which begins with three witches planning to meet MacBeth and Banquo, two generals in the army of Scotland’s king, Duncan. The generals, thanks to their ability as military leaders, have prevented an invasion from the north by Norwegians. The witches tell MacBeth that he will rule Scotland. They also tell Banquo that his descendants will also sit on the throne. This annotated edition includes a biography and critical essay.
