Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue Raisonn' of Works on the Occult Sciences, Vol. 3: Freemasonry, a Catalogue of Lodge Histories (England) There still remain a great number of very old Lodges whose Histories have not yet been written, and although it is unfortunately true that in many instances the oldest Minute Books have been lost or destroyed, there are some Lodges whose records are extant and yet await a literary Past Master to edit and publish them. Our brethren should bear in mind that all missing records have not been destroyed although lost, and that such volumes may be recovered from Old book shops and the lumber rooms of country houses. Book Occult Phenomena in the Light of Theology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Occult Phenomena in the Light of Theology Classic Reprint written by Alois Wiesinger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Occult Phenomena in the Light of Theology E number of books that have in recent years been ten on the subject of occultism is very large indeed, and the number of its adherents and of the periodicals concerned with it grows continually; this is a sign that it has become a serious problem, one which disturbs men's souls like a spiritual epidemic. Professor F eldmann, to whom the writer is obliged for many valuable suggestions, states in his Okkulte Philosophie that a second-hand bookseller in Munich sent him a catalogue of books on occult sciences consisting of four volumes, each of which contained between 600 and 800 titles. A number of firms are engaged in the printing and distribution of publica tions on the occult both at home and abroad. The causes of this general widespread interest reside first of all in the great hunger for the preternatural which the various philosophical systems are unable to assuage, however high-sounding their names; this epidemic, however, is also a violent reaction against the materialism which holds matter to be the sole reality and the mother of all living things, which assumes no difference between spirit and matter, and refers to man simply as a digestive tract open at both ends. The religion of Christ satisfies this hunger; but many have forsaken God, the fountain of living water, and have built unto themselves cisterns that hold no water (jer. 2. I 3) They have no knowledge of the means of salvation, and, although they consider themselves educated, are ignorant of Christian doctrine. They stand in particular fear of the Catholic Church because of her moral code, live like heathens and are ready to accept any superstition that in some slight way promises to lead them beyond the material. Book A History of Magic and Experimental Science Vol 1

Download or read book A History of Magic and Experimental Science Vol 1 written by Lynn Thorndike and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Magic and Experimental Science, Vol. 1: During the First Thirteen Centuries of Our Era Galen: the Man and His Times, in The Scientific Monthly, January, 1922; Early Christianity and Natural Science, in The Biblical Review, July, 1922; The Latin Pseudo Aristotle and Medieval Occult Science, in The Journal of English and Germanic Philology, April, 1922 and notes on Daniel of Morley and Gundissalinus in The English His torical Review. For permission to make use of these pre vions publications in the present work I am indebted to the editors of the periodicals just mentioned, and also to the editors of The Columbia University Studies in History, Economics, and Public Law, The American Historical Re view, Classical Philology, The M onist, Nature, The Philo sophical Review, and Science. The form, however, of these previous publications has often been altered in embodying them in this book, and, taken together, they constitute but a fraction of it. Book I greatly amplifies the account of magic in the Roman Empire contained in my doctoral dis sertation. Over ten years ago I prepared an account of magic and science in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries based on material available in print in libraries of this country and arranged topically, but I did not publish it, as it seemed advisable to supplement it by study abroad and of the manuscript material, and to adopt an arrangement by authors. The result is Books IV and V of the present work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
