Book excerpt: In 1774, Edinburgh “pirate publisher” Alexander Donaldson boldly challenged a group of major London booksellers who sought to monopolize the right to copy books in perpetuity. Why is there a time limit on copyright? This book goes back to the beginning on this question by focusing on a pivotal eighteenth-century court debate in England from a social and cultural point of view. Its historical investigation of the issues of copyright is based on detailed documentary research. The book explores the relationships among the booksellers, lawyers, members of the nobility, and writers who formed the backdrop to the eighteenth-century publishing industry, a backdrop that offers many insights in considering the issues of copyright today. It is also a history of publishing culture, introducing the ideas and debates about literary works prevailing at that time and the people who figured in those debates. “It is difficult to treat ‘monopoly’ or ‘piracy’ as a clear dichotomy of good and bad,” writes Yamada in his conclusion. “Both were ultimately acting in the pursuit of economic gain, and both claimed to either represent the rights of authors or the convenience of readers to defend their own position. This book tries to illustrate how their head-on clash in the courtroom, intertwined with the interpersonal relationships among lawyers and judges. This approach may seem curious to scholars of law who may be interested primarily in a detailed analysis of the logical structure of court debates. I am convinced, however, that matters not to be found in the courtroom debates alone can show us the forces that set history in motion.” Copyright is an artificial thing, which was born out of the pulsing magma that was the emergence of modern society. Today in the twenty-first century, once again society is undergoing great changes wrought by advances in digital technology and the development of global capitalism. Renewed debate over copyright is indispensable. A parable for the digital media era, this book’s examination of the historic case of Donaldson offers valuable hints as we develop our own stance on the issues of copyright.

The labour records of the printing and bookselling trades probably represent the fullest account of any work force in early modern England and the printed products of the trade survive in such great numbers that they enable us to examine them for evidence not only of who made and sold them but also of how they were made. These volumes constitute a reference work of importance not only for literature specialists, bibliographers, and historians of book production but also for economic, social, and political historians. Most importantly the Chronology and Calendar extends the earlier work of Arber, Greg, and Jackson on the earlier seventeenth century. Book excerpt: Bluestocking Feminism and British-German Cultural Transfer, 1750–1837 examines the processes of cultural transfer between Britain and Germany during the Personal Union, the period from 1714 to 1837 when the kings of England were simultaneously Electors of Hanover. While scholars have generally focused on the political and diplomatic implications of the Personal Union, Alessa Johns offers a new perspective by tracing sociocultural repercussions and investigating how, in the period of the American and French Revolutions, Britain and Germany generated distinct discourses of liberty even though they were nonrevolutionary countries. British and German reformists—feminists in particular—used the period’s expanded pathways of cultural transfer to generate new discourses as well as to articulate new views of what personal freedom, national character, and international interaction might be. Johns traces four pivotal moments of cultural exchange: the expansion of the book trade, the rage for translation, the effect of revolution on intra-European travel and travel writing, and the impact of transatlantic journeys on visions of reform. Johns reveals the way in which what she terms “bluestocking transnationalism” spawned discourses of liberty and attempts at sociocultural reform during this period of enormous economic development, revolution, and war.

Book excerpt: Ireland's situation on the periphery of western Europe is sometimes seen as isolating it from lierary and intellectual developments during the eighteenth century. An examination of Irish private libraries and the book trade which supplied them shows instead an Irish readership au fait with Continental trends in literature, the sciences, politics and the arts. This study concentrates on French language works circulating in the country through the use of booksellers' and auction catalogues, book reviews and advertising. An exploration of the ownership of French language works points to an interested audience at different social levels and across the religious divides. Dublin dominated the Irish trade in French-language books, its major booksellers importing stock from London and European publishing centres and distributing books and periodicals wholesale and by catalogue to the larger Irish cities and towns. Domestic publication in French also occured in Dublin, Cork and Belfast. The provincial cities too had a role to play in the distribution of French-language material, opening up new markets in the smaller towns, using regional newspaper advertising and selling by catalogue. Questions of literacy and readership are explored, with particular emphasis on the teaching of French, indentifying teachers and schools throughout the country. The huguenot contribution is outlined, especially their role in the publication of French-language books in the first half of the century. Many Catholics received their education in Francophone countries, returning to Ireland with advanced French language skills. In elite circles the French language was a fashionable accomplishment. This works draws on comparable studies in Britain, France and Germany to place Irish readership of French-language materials in the broader context. The picture that emerges shows Irish readers as active participants in the cosmopolitan culture which flourished in eighteenth-century Europe.
