Book excerpt: Offering a complete accounting of the insects of North America, this handbook is an up-dated edition of the first handbook ever compiled in the history of American entomology. By using American Insects, A Handbook of the Insects of America North of Mexico, Second Edition, readers can quickly determine the taxonomic position of any species, genus, or higher taxon of insect known to occur in America and Canada. Every order, family, and genus is conveniently numbered and indexed, making this volume the only complete single source for all of the names of orders, families, and genera currently available. This book fills the need for an accurate way to identify, with the several hundred drawings and photos, the common insects of all orders. Now there is a tool available to those working without a major collection and library; and those who would like to have a general knowledge of insect life without becoming overwhelmed by the vast number of minute insect species. This usable guide provides sizes, shapes, color patterns and salient features of some species of each major family by pointing out those groups most likely to be encountered, including all North America pests. What's New in this Edition? Researchers in many orders use the results of cladistics, a new tool for determining the relationship of orders, families, genera, and species of organisms, including plants as well as animals Specialists have provided lengthy lists of generic changes Many of the identification keys have been revised by adding more illustrations and making sure all description terms are in the Glossary The bibliographies of each Order section have been updated to include all important works that have appeared since the original edition

Book excerpt: The second supplement cites the important literature on the classification of coccids that appeared between January 1, 1963, the cutoff date of the first supplement, and December 31, 1969. In addition, it includes numerous earlier articles that were omitted from the previous bibliographies but that are now available and appear to be relevant. This supplement also corrects the few errors in authorship, dates, volume numbers, and pages that have been noted in the former bibliographies.

G. D. May 1976 Part III THEORDERSOFINSECTS THE CLASSIFICATION AND PHYLOGENY OF INSECTS The classification of insects has passed through many changes and with the growth of detailed knowledge an increasing number of orders has come to be recognized. Handlirsch (1908) and Wilson and Doner (1937) have reviewed the earlier attempts at classification, among which the schemes of Brauer (1885), Sharp (1899) and Borner (1904) did much to define the more distinctive recent orders. In 1908 Handlirsch published a more revolutionary system, incorporating recent and fossil forms, which gave the Collembola, Thysanura and Diplura the status of three independent Arthropodan classes and considered as separate orders such groups as the Sialoidea, Raphidioidea, Heteroptera and Homoptera. He also split up the old order Orthoptera, gave its components ordinal rank and regrouped them with some of the other orders into a subclass Orthopteroidea and another subclass Blattaeformia.

Book Australian gall inducing scale insects on Eucalyptus revision of Opisthoscelis Schrader Coccoidea Eriococcidae and descriptions of a new genus and nine new species

Download or read book Australian gall inducing scale insects on Eucalyptus revision of Opisthoscelis Schrader Coccoidea Eriococcidae and descriptions of a new genus and nine new species written by Nate B. Hardy and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two most species-rich radiations of gall-inducing eriococcids are parasites of Eucalyptus: (1) the genus Apiomorpha R?bsaamen (ca 40 described species and many undescribed cryptic species), and (2) a monophyletic group composed of species currently placed in the genera Lachnodius Maskell, Opisthoscelis Schrader, Sphaerococcopsis Cockerell, Fragorbis Hardy and Gullan and Floracoccus Beardsley (ca 30 described species). We revise the genus Opisthoscelis Schrader, and erect the genus Tanyscelis gen. n. with Opisthoscelis pisiformis Froggatt as its type species. As a result of our taxonomic revision, Opisthoscelis has six species and Tanyscelis has 12 species. We describe the adult female and female gall of each species and galls of males for 10 species of Opisthoscelis and Tanyscelis, and provide photographs of the galls for most species. A key to the adult females of the species of both genera is included.

This book was released on 2013-09-23 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iran is in the Near East, located between longitudes E 44?02? and 63?20? and latitudes N 25?00? and 39?47?; bordered to the north by the Caspian Sea, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan; to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan; to the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman; and to the west by Iraq and Turkey. It occupies 1,648,195km2, of which 14% is arable land, 8% forest, 47% natural (i.e. non-arable) pasture and 31% varied environment (Yale et al. 2001). The list contains all species of Coccoidea recorded up to March, 2013 and includes 275 species in 113 genera and 13 families. This present checklist is intended to facilitate access to the most recent data on Iranian Coccoidea for taxonomists and to update the recorded species from Iran. Only records in which Iran is specifically mentioned are cited. New records from Iran are marked with asterisks and the following 32 species are currently only known from Iran.

Book The Greenland Entomofauna

Download or read book The Greenland Entomofauna written by Jens Böcher and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Greenland Entomofauna an international team of 64 taxonomic specialists provide for the first time a richly illustrated guide to the identification of the ≈1200 species of Hexapods/Insects, Arachnids and Myriapods so far known to occur in the country. While the composition, origin and adaptations of the Greenland fauna has always been a challenge to biogeographers and ecologists/ecophysiologists, the provision of a tool for detailed identification of its constituent species is now particularly timely, since global climate change will expectedly have a particularly noticeable impact on biota at high latitudes. This obviously renders the feasibility of monitoring distributional range shifts of the principal components of this biota a matter of some urgency. Download or read book Mealybugs and their Management in Agricultural and Horticultural crops written by M. Mani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of information on all basic aspects of mealybugs, as well as management strategies for mealybug species affecting different crop plants in different countries. It highlights the latest information on morphology, cytogenetics, taxonomy, molecular characterization, biology, damage, ecology, natural enemies, ant association, control measures, insecticide resistance and pheromones – essential aspects which will equip researchers to pursue further research on mealybugs. The book examines current trends in the management of mealybugs for a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops, forest plants and mulberry in different countries, while also addressing the negative effects of chemical control methods and presenting success stories of mealybug control that utilize their natural enemies. It offers a valuable guide for crop growers, government officials and other stakeholders in the industry, as well as researchers and students engaged in related research and development activities.
