Book A Catalogue of Minerals and Synonyms Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Catalogue of Minerals and Synonyms Classic Reprint written by T. Egleston and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of Minerals and Synonyms This catalogue was commenced in the year 1867 for use in arranging the collections of the School of Mines of Columbia College, but after many months labor, when the work was nearly completed up to that date, it was abandoned on account of the press of other duties. The collections have since that time increased to such an extent that the necessity of a Museum catalogue has impressed itself upon me many times, but other duties prevented my taking it up. In the year 1885, however, having occasion to make some investigations and finding it almost impossible to get at the different synonyms of the various minerals on account of the imperfections of the indices of the various works, the work was taken up again and finished. It was found that the progress of the science since 1867 had been so great that the work previously done had to be altogether abandoned, so that all that is left of it is the general plan. It is hardly to be hoped that this catalogue is without errors, or that every name which has been published has been found. There are, however, several thousand more names contained in it than in any other published index. In doing the work there have been consulted first of all the collections of the School of Mines, and also the following works: (1) Dana's System of Mineralogy Fifth edition. New York, 1875. (2) Dana's first, second, and third Supplements. New York. (3) American Journal of Science. (4) Elemente der Mineralogie. Naumann. Tenth edition. Leipsic. 1877. (5) Cours de Mineralogie. Delafosse. 3 vols. Paris, 1862. (6) Traite de Mineralogie. Dufrenoy. 5 vols. Second edition. 1859. (7) Websky die Minerale Species. Breslau, 1868. (8) Readwin's Index Mineralogy. London, 1867. (9) Bristow's Glossary Mineralogy. London, 1861. (10) Plattner's Blowpipe Analysis. New York, 1873. (11) Cleaveland's Mineralogy. Second edition. 1822. (12) The Bulletin de la Societe Mineralogique de France. (13) Zeitschrift fur Krystallographie und Mineralogie. (14) Mohs's Grundriss der Mineralogie. Dresden, 1822. (15) Haidinger's Translation of Mohs. Edinburgh, 1825. (16) Mineralogical Magazine. London. (17) Tabellarische Ubersicht der Mineralien. Groth. Third edition. 1889. (18) Neues Jahrbuch fur Mineralogie, Geologie und Paleontologie. (19) Tschermak's Mineralogische und Petrographische Mittheilungen. None of these have been found, after careful observation, to have had a complete index. The need of such a collection of synonyms has been such a necessity in the management of the collection of the School of Mines that it is hoped it will be found to be useful in other museums. Book A Glossary of Mineralogy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Glossary of Mineralogy Classic Reprint written by Henry William Bristow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of Mineralogy Tms little work was undertaken to supply a want which the Author had frequently experienced. In compiling it he has endeavoured to produce a handy book, combining facility of reference with a concise and familiar account of all the known minerals. In carrying this object into execution, the various names used by different authors have been introduced, as well as certain terms, which, though now obsolete, are, nevertheless, of common occurrence in the works of older mineralogists. To assist those persons who may wish to know something more about minerals than can be learned from books, and who may be desirous of studying our national collections by comparing the printed descriptions with the specimens themselves, references have (when practicable) been made to the Cases in which they will be found both in the British Museum and in the Museum of Practical Geology. The copious list of synonyms used by German and French mineralogists, will, it is to be hoped, prove of great assistance to the student in reading the works of foreign authors, as well as in studying mineral collections in continental museums, or in private cabinets at home, according to whatever system they may happen to be arranged. The names of the authors printed in Italics are those of the persons by whom the minerals to which they are appended were originally examined and named, or they are those of the authors in whose works the mineral will be found described under the name which they follow in the Glossary.
