An Example of Racism in Medicine. HeLa cells are the most well-known and widely used in the biological research community. HeLa cells have played a key role in many of the scientific developments of the last 60+ years including the development of the Polio vaccine, as well as work on HIV and numerous cancer studies. The HeLa cell line has endured as a research model for the last ~70 years because it can be easily grown, is incredibly robust and is available as a free resource from John Hopkins. Moreover, with the volume of work done on these cells it means that it is well characterised making it possible to infer more information. One issue with HeLa cells is that due to their robust nature they can inadvertently end up as contaminants of other cell lines. Thus, an attempt has been made in this E-Booklet to include the following Key Takeaways- Hela Cells: · HeLa cells are the first immortal human cell line. · The cells came from a cervical cancer sample obtained from Henrietta Lack in 1951, without her knowledge or permission. · HeLa cells have led to many important scientific discoveries, yet there are disadvantages to working with them. · HeLa cells have led to the examination of the ethical considerations of working with human cells. Further, it is also attempted to deliver an Image Gallery of several Microscopic views for the enthusiastic Medicos at one click! …Dr. H. K. Saboowala. M.B.(Bom) .M.R.S.H.(London)

Book A new concept of Microchimerism and its Important Role in Autoimmune Diseases Cancer Wound healing etc

Download or read book A new concept of Microchimerism and its Important Role in Autoimmune Diseases Cancer Wound healing etc written by Dr. Hakim Saboowala and published by Dr.Hakim Saboowala. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new concept of Microchimerism and its Important Role in Autoimmune diseases, Cancer, Wound healing, etc. Microchimerism is the presence of cells from one individual in another genetically distinct individual. Pregnancy is the main cause of natural microchimerism through transplacental bi-directional cell trafficking between mother and fetus. In addition to a variety of cell-free substances, it is now well-recognized that some cells are also exchanged in pregnancy. Furthermore, it is now known that microchimerism persists decades later both in mother and in her progeny. The consequences of pregnancy-related microchimerism are under active investigation. However, many researchers have suggested a close relationship linking fetal microchimerism and the development of autoimmune diseases. Fetal microchimerism is emerging as a potential contributing factor in certain diseases, including cancer. Parallel studies in animal and human pregnancy suggest that microchimeric fetal cells play a role in wound healing. An effort has been made in this Booklet to discuss the role of Fetal Microchimerism - a potential contributing factor in wound healing, certain diseases, including cancer etc. along with several relevant illustrations. …Dr. H. Saboowala. and published by Dr.Hakim Saboowala. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Immunotherapies against α-Synucleinopathies and Tauopathies”- Exploring the promising Disease-Modifying Treatment Strategies., α-Synuclein and tau deposition in the central nervous system is responsible for various parkinsonian syndromes, including: § Parkinson’s disease, § Multiple system atrophy, § Dementia with Lewy bodies, § Progressive supranuclear palsy and cortico-basal degeneration. Emerging evidence has suggested that pathologic α-synuclein and tau are transmitted from cell to cell and further accelerate the aggregation of pathologic proteins in neighbouring cells. Furthermore, extracellular pathologic proteins have also been reported to provoke inflammatory responses that lead to neurodegeneration. Therefore, immunotherapies targeting extracellular α-synuclein and tau have been proposed as potential disease-modifying strategies. It is strived in this E-BOOKLET to summarize completed phase I trials and ongoing phase II trials of immunotherapies against α-synuclein and tau and to discuss concerns and hurdles to overcome in the future. This book was released on 2024-04-07 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Protein Misfolding Cyclic Amplification? Protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA) is a technique that amplifies misfolded prions. It's used as a test for spongiform encephalopathies like: § Chronic wasting disease (CWD) or § Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). PMCA is similar to Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) but doesn't involve nucleotides. It's a widely used in vitro cell-free prion conversion assay. PMCA uses ultrasound waves to fragment the PrP(Sc) polymers, increasing the amount of seeds. PMCA is the sole technique that can successfully amplify the disease-associated, infectious form of the prion protein (PrPSc) in vitro. PMCA has been broadly applied in research areas that include the veterinary disease diagnosis. An attempt has been made in this E-Booklet to describe concisely the entire technique along with the relevant Images for better understanding at one click! Dr. H. K. Saboowala. Download or read book The Lazarus phenomenon Auto resurrection An Image Crisis for Doctors An Analytical Concise review written by Dr. Hakim. K. Saboowala and published by Dr.Hakim Saboowala. This book was released on 2022-06-12 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lazarus phenomenon (Auto-resurrection): An Image Crisis for Doctors. An Analytical Concise review. The term was coined from the story of Lazarus, who was resurrected by Christ four days after his death. Medical literature which essentially implies the ‘resurrection’ of an individual after cardiac arrest. Although there have been a handful of such cases reported, the clinical incidence and significance may be underestimated Because of the presumed infrequency of this condition, there are no studies specifically researching Lazarus phenomenon in scientific literature. Research databases namely Google Scholar, Science Direct, Medline and PubMed were utilized. Only articles which identified cases where the return of spontaneous circulation occurred after cessation of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and review articles on the entity were included. The mentioned databases were searched using the terms ‘Lazarus phenomenon’, ‘cardiopulmonary resuscitation’ and ‘return of spontaneous circulation’. A literature review was synthesised based on articles meeting the eligibility criteria to better understand the phenomenon of return of spontaneous circulation. Thus, an attempt has been made in this Booklet to systematically and precisely present current and past knowledge on this rare but definitive phenomenon. …Dr. H. K. Saboowala. Book Exploring the Current Knowledge of Molecular Genetics of Human Pigmentation Disorders

Download or read book Exploring the Current Knowledge of Molecular Genetics of Human Pigmentation Disorders written by Dr. Hakim. Saboowala. and published by Dr.Hakim Saboowala. This book was released on 2022-10-10 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the Current Knowledge of “Molecular Genetics of Human Pigmentation Disorders”., Pigmentation has long fascinated the human race, with developmental melanocyte abnormalities reported by ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians. Pigmentation, defined as the placement of pigment in skin, hair, and eyes for coloration, is distinctive because the location, amount, and type of pigmentation provides a visual manifestation of genetic heterogeneity in pathways regulating the pigment-producing cells, melanocytes. The scope of this genetic heterogeneity in humans ranges from normal to pathological pigmentation phenotypes. Clinically abnormal human pigmentation exhibits markedly reduced or increased pigment levels, known as hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation, respectively. Elucidation of the molecular genetics underlying pigmentation has revealed genes important for melanocyte development and function. Thus, unravelling the genetics of easily visualized pigmentation disorders has identified molecular similarities between melanocytes and less visible cell types/tissues, revealing a common cellular origin and/or common genetic regulatory pathways. It is strived in this Booklet to discuss notable human pigmentation disorders and their associated genetic alterations and to illustrate the Booklet with plenty of relevant IMAGES/Table for better understanding! …Dr. H. This book was released on 2022-11-28 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fitzpatrick Skin Types (Phototype): Types, Purpose, Limitations & Alternatives. The Fitzpatrick skin phototypes (FSP) were developed in Boston for use with phototherapy. The scale’s original purpose was to help determine a patient’s risk of burning or tanning when exposed to UV light. Fitzpatrick initially based the scale on a person’s skin and eye colour to determine the amount of UV therapy used to treat skin disorders without causing phototoxicity, or irritation from UV light. The current scale classifies skin from types I to VI. Type I refers to skin that always burns, while type VI refers to skin that never burns. · The Fitzpatrick scale was also used to determine the risk of skin cancer from exposure to UV rays. · The scale is also often used to determine the setting on a laser when performing laser hair removal. · It has also been used by medical professionals to assess risk for sunburn and skin cancer. Thus, an effort has been made in this Booklet to precisely present Fitzpatrick skin types, scale’s limitations, and proposed alternatives, a sample questionnaire along with relevant TABLES and ILLUSTRATIONS for better understanding. Download or read book Need To Know About The Leaky Gut Syndrome Ingredients That Aid Treat It A Complete Pedagogy written by Dr. Hakim Saboowala and published by Dr.Hakim Saboowala. This book was released on 2023-06-29 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Need To Know About “The Leaky Gut Syndrome & Ingredients” That Aid Treat It. A Complete Pedagogy. The human body is exposed daily to potentially harmful substances and agents. The GIT has the most significant load of antigens. The GIT can protect the intestinal integrity by allowing the passage of beneficial agents and blocking the path of harmful substances. Under normal conditions, a healthy intestinal barrier prevents toxic elements from entering the blood stream. However, several factors described in this Booklet can compromise the composition of the intestinal microbiota and the homeostasis of the intestinal barrier function of the intestine, leading to increased intestinal permeability. Intestinal hyperpermeability can allow the entry of harmful agents through the junctions of the intestinal epithelium, which pass into the bloodstream and affect various organs and systems. Thus, leaky gut syndrome and intestinal barrier dysfunction are associated with intestinal diseases. The impact of dietary nutrients on barrier function can be crucial for designing new strategies for patients with the pathogenesis of leaky gut-related diseases associated with epithelial barrier dysfunctions. Thus, it is strived in this E-Booklet to describe the role of functional ingredients, suggested as mediators of leaky gut-related disorders along with plenty of several relevant ILLUSTRATIONS/Tables for better understanding the entity. …Dr. H.
