Book A Case Study on the Impacts of Rigor Relevance and Relationships in a Freshman Academy for Secondary Classroom Students

Download or read book A Case Study on the Impacts of Rigor Relevance and Relationships in a Freshman Academy for Secondary Classroom Students written by Anna S. Moose and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study researched the impact a Freshman Academy approach has on rigor, relevance, and relationships in a secondary classroom setting. For the purpose of this paper, a Freshman Academy is one where ninth-grade students are grouped together in their core academic courses with a common group of teachers. Within these common academic courses, ideas and concepts are integrated in order to transition more effectively into the high school environment and provide students with a more cohesive academic experience. This paper further reflects the current, critical problems in existence in today's high school setting that can potentially be addressed using the Freshman Academy approach. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine how integrating the curriculum, utilizing effective teacher collaboration, and creating a Freshman Academy impact the rigor, relevance, and relationships for both students and teachers during the ninth-grade year.

Book Exploring the Relationship Between the Freshman Academy Environment and Academic Achievement and Resilience

This book was released on 2016 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student success or failure during the transition to high school is an accurate predictor of student success beyond the ninth grade. In an attempt to support students during this transition, many schools across the nation have implemented small learning communities called freshman academies to bridge the apparent gap in achievement between middle and high school. Research has linked freshman academies and ninth grade success in terms of test scores (Styron & Peasant, 2010). There is, however, little empirical research that examines the success of freshman academy students in terms of promoting resilience and other factors during this time of risk. Therefore, this correlational study tested the resilience and stage-environment fit theories by exploring the relationship between student perceptions of the freshman academy environment and student resilience in terms of academic achievement (grade point average), socio-emotional adjustment, and school confidence. Each of the research hypotheses was analyzed using Spearman's rho to relate students' perceptions of the freshman academy to each of the criterion variables. The research failed to reject the first null hypothesis, as there was not a statistically significant correlation between school environment and academic achievement. However, the research rejected the last two null hypotheses, proving that there was in fact a statistically significant correlation between school environment and perceived socio-emotional adjustment and school confidence. The researcher concluded that freshman academy success is linked more to the social aspects of the high school transition than to the academic aspects.

Book Initial Classmate Acceptance Reduces Freshman Year Decline in Sense of School Belonging Among Urban High School Students

Download or read book Initial Classmate Acceptance Reduces Freshman Year Decline in Sense of School Belonging Among Urban High School Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although research has examined the positive outcomes associated with sense of school belonging, relatively little empirical attention has been given to identifying the variables that influence or contribute to sense of belonging. There is some evidence from cross-sectional studies of middle school students that academic performance correlates with sense of school belonging. Furthermore, perceived classmate acceptance explained a significant amount of the variance in sense of belonging in one sample of middle schoolers. It is not yet clear, however, if (1) these relationships generalize to older students, and (2) if one or both of those correlates prospectively predict sense of school belonging during the key freshman year transitional period. A further question worth examining is if academic performance and perceived classmate acceptance prospectively predict sense of school belonging better than the reverse temporal sequencing (e.g., beginning of the year sense of belonging as a predictor of end of the year academic performance and classmate acceptance). The current study examined these questions in a sample of Black and Latino urban high school freshmen. Consistent with past research with younger and older adolescents, sense of school belonging declined over the course of the year in our sample of high school freshmen. With regard to predictive relations, perceived classmate acceptance, but not academic performance, prospectively predicted end of year sense of school belonging, after controlling for initial levels of sense of belonging. Furthermore, when the reverse temporal sequencing of these variables was tested, sense of school belonging did not prospectively predict perceived classmate acceptance. These findings suggest that the positive relation between perceived classmate acceptance and sense of school belonging generalizes from younger adolescents (middle schoolers) to older adolescents (high school freshmen). Although no conclusions regarding causality can be drawn from our brief longitudinal study of Black and Latino high school freshmen, given that perceived classmate acceptance prospectively predicted end of year sense of school belonging, and the lack of support for the reverse temporal sequence, the role of perceived classmate acceptance in the development and/or maintenance of sense of school belonging during the key transition into high school warrants further empirical attention.

Book Students Perspectives on Belonging and Scholar Identity Development

Download or read book Students Perspectives on Belonging and Scholar Identity Development written by Caroline C. Church and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The TRIO Educational Talent Search is an educational opportunity program serving students in middle school through high school. It is meant to increase the number of students who are admitted to, enroll in, are retained by, and graduate from post-secondary degree programs. TRIO staff members provide voluntary enrichment activities for youth in their programs. Each program must identify the best practices that will motivate and prepare students to meet and reach difficult educational goals. This research study identifies best practices in fostering belonging and scholar identity among TRIO pre-college students. The data from this qualitative case study show separate but related results. The results focused on student relationships in their middle-school environment, as well as other characteristics of student scholar identities. The findings suggest that students seek a sense of belonging at school, but seeking this belonging can have negative repercussions. Furthermore, participant responses suggested that there are ways for educators to encourage student motivation to work on academics through concrete learning and choice. These findings lead to significant possible implications. Educators must address students' sense of belonging at school before they work to create a learning environment that fosters student motivation for academic learning. They can use tools such as experiential learning, choice, and real-world outcomes to foster student motivation for academic learning. If educators and programs work to address students' sense of belonging, and create learning environments that foster student motivation for academic learning, students will be better poised to develop a scholar identity.

Book excerpt: This book provides a guide for a long-overdue public dialogue about why and how we need to reinvent our nation's schools. How has the world changed for our children; what do all students need to know in light of these changes; how do we hold students and schools accountable for results; what do good schools look like; and what must leaders do to create more of these schools? These are some of the questions that drive this book. The answers emerging to these questions may surprise many. The most successful public schools of the 21st century look a lot more like our 19th century village schools than our current factory model of schooling. This book describes these "new village schools" that have been created in the last decade and suggests that they are a prototype for the schools of the future.

Download or read book Engaging Students written by Phillip C. Schlechty and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-04-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ENGAGING STUDENTS In Phillip Schlechty's best-selling book Working on the Work, he outlined a motivational framework for improving student performance by improving the quality of schools designed for students. Engaging Students offers a next-step resource in which Schlechty incorporates what he's learned from the field and from the hundreds of workshops he and the Schlechty Center staff have conducted since Working on the Work was first published. This innovative and practical book is focused on helping teachers become increasingly successful in designing engaging work for their students. Schlechty contends that rather than viewing schools as teaching platforms, schools must be viewed as learning platforms. Rather than seeing schools as knowledge distribution systems, schools must be seen as knowledge work systems. Rather than defining teachers as instructors, teachers must be defined as designers, leaders, and guides to instruction. Engaging Students also includes useful questionnaires that will facilitate discussion, analysis, and action planning at both school and classroom levels. Praise for Engaging Students "In Engaging Students, Schlechty boldly delineates why the focus on engaging students overrides the focus on test scores. Every teacher and administrator in my district will use this guide to transform our entire organization into one that is truly focused on student engagement." KIM REDMOND, superintendent, Canton Local Schools, Canton, Ohio "This insightful book reminds us that every decision made in schools should ultimately benefit students. You will find yourself referring to this book again and again as a guide to support you in your role as an educator." ALLENE MAGILL, executive director, Professional Association of Georgia Educators, Atlanta, Georgia "Here is a much-enriched framework for everything Dr. Schlechty advocates: well articulated curriculum standards, schools as a platform for learning, teachers as leaders and designers of engaging and meaningful work, and students becoming responsible for their learning." NYANA SIMS, K-12 literacy and induction facilitator, Goshen School District, Torrington, Wyoming "By understanding and implementing the principles so thoughtfully articulated in this book, schools can become centers of highly engaged learners and in that endeavor find again the joy of teaching and learning." JOHNNY VESELKA, executive director, Texas Association of School Administrators, Austin, Texas
