Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technical basis of the study reported here is time-series digital spatial data handling with special reference to the air photo archive. The merging of remote sensing, GIS and visualization techniques was applied to demonstrate the potential for realistic computer visualizations depicting the dynamic nature of forested environments and clearance patterns since 1947. Results of time series mapping and land cover change detection 1947-2004 shows that riparian canopy of any description has declined from an initially low cover; that forest plantation has come nowhere near compensating for land clearance; and that not only have the scientific studies ignored the scope for geograhical variation to be taken into account, but catchment management strategies seem also to have ignored the same thing. It is shown that the building of a time-series (1947-2004) digital spatial database with special reference to the aerial photos allows the nature and pattern of land-cover change in each of the eight sub-catchments of the Lang Lang catchment since 1947 to be documented as never before. Clearly the relative significance of the various determinants of stream condition will not be the same in every sub-catchment because the terrain attributes are not homogeneous, and nor is the history of land cover change, this latter being one of the factors mentioned most specifically by the latest studies made in search of explanation and path to mitigation. In terms of land cover change, data from the state and other air photo archives support change detection studies between 1947 and the present. It is shown that of the eight sub-catchments of the Lang-Lang (especially the Lang Lang (little) reach) has suffered more than others. Most of the study period land clearance took place before 1967. A steady trend for the whole study period was seen in riparian vegetation buffer clearance. As yet, the results of new land-cover restoration plans are barely discernable from image interpretation. This study not only offers quantification of explanatory value in water quality change studies, but also in scenario modelling for stakeholder consensus building. Such modelling will be useful as efforts are made to restore the riparian zones, and protect native vegetation in order to maintain Lang Lang water quality.

But the two objectives cannot be considered in isolation: they need to be jointly tackled through an integrated strategy. It examines the potential impact of climate change and climate policies on poverty reduction. It also provides guidance on how to create a “win-win†? situation so that climate change policies contribute to poverty reduction and poverty-reduction policies contribute to climate change mitigation and resilience building. The key finding of the report is that climate change represents a significant obstacle to the sustained eradication of poverty, but future impacts on poverty are determined by policy choices: rapid, inclusive, and climate-informed development can prevent most short-term impacts whereas immediate pro-poor, emissions-reduction policies can drastically limit long-term ones.

They trap sediment delivered from mountain source areas, and exert an important control on the delivery of sediment to downstream environments, to axial drainages and to sedimentary basins. Alluvial fan geomorphology and sedimentology reflect not only drainage basin size and geology, but change in response to tectonic, climatic and base-level controls. One of the challenges facing alluvial fan research is to resolve how these gross controls are reflected in alluvial fan dynamics and to apply the results of studies of modern fan processes and Quaternary fans to the understanding of sedimentary sequences in the rock record.
