Abstract: ABSTRACT This research study provides an in-depth understanding on the implementation of Interactive Learning Network (ILN) in the Hong Kong Shue Yan College (SYC) for its first year adoption. It especially emphasizes on investigating the student adoption of this web-based learning platform and seeks to find out the determinants influencing student adoption. Web-enhanced courses become popular in higher education and a number of studies attempt to identify the factors affecting technology acceptance. Case study methodology is employed for the study, with both quantitative and qualitative data collected from different sources. Details of the empirical study are then presented. Findings indicate that the students' intention to use ILN validates the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) that perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness are the major determinants. Other factors have been revealed and discussed in the detail. Discussion and implications of the study are presented. The dissertation concludes with limitations of the study followed by the suggestions for further research. iv DOI: 10.5353/th_b3041266 Subjects: Web-based instruction - China - Hong Kong - Case studies Internet in education - China - Hong Kong - Case studies Education, Higher - Computer-assisted instruction College students - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes College teachers - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes

Book A Basic Web based Distance Education Model

Download or read book A Basic Web based Distance Education Model written by Dehan Turanlı and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the recent years, the rapid growth of the Web and multimedia technologies urged a shift of Computer-Based Educational Technology towards the Web. In the leading universities of the developed countries, studies on Web-Based Education have started and in an increasing manner are going strong. In the last few years, the leading universities of Turkey are also greatly interested in Web-Based Education and have started their re-structuring accordingly. The goal of this study is to design a basic model to be utilized by a university aiming to offer web-based distance education. In achieving this; by the use of system approach, a model comprising of three subsystems, namely system analysis, system design and evaluation&control, working in coordination with each other, has been tried to be proposed. There may be only one missing point of this study, that is; since preparing a lesson or program according to this model was not foreseen in this thesis, the effectiveness evaluations suggested in the evaluation&control subsystem could not be realized. It is recommended to realize such an evaluation in a further study to make it possible to reveal the effectiveness of web-based education by preparing a lesson or program according to this model. On the other hand, a survey has been conducted in Turkey in some of the universities either offering web-based education or are interested in studies in this field. The aim of this survey is to analyze from system design point of view the studies carried out in our universities on this matter and to get a picture of the existing situation. The directed questions aiming this were prepared by taking into consideration of the three stages of system design subsystem, i.e. administrative design, educational design, and technological design. It is intended for the result of this survey to shed light to the new-coming institutions in this field. As a matter of fact, each stage of this subsystem is a survey item itself and should be researched one by one in other studies.Furthermore, for individuals interested in distance education and web-based distance education and for people newly involved in this matter, this thesis is intended to be a reference material and to serve this purpose the sections are prepared containing the basic information accordingly. Nevertheless, since most of the information regarding system design are prepared without taking into consideration the disabled people, the relevant information are not complete. In another study, the offering of the web-based education to the disabled people, especially for deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, and blind students, has to be investigated. Finally, in this thesis the proposed model for the Web-Based Distance Education, as being a basic and conceptual model, has a flexible structure; i.e., suitable for all the institutions and establishments intending to offer the web-based education. What is important here, is to exploit the potential sources within the institution that will display the required systematic approach.

Book excerpt: Institutions of higher education are harnessing the communication ability of the Internet to offer classes and academic degree programs. This study investigated adult students during their first semester in a distance delivered doctoral program. The purpose of the study was to examine the use of web-based communication tools and their ability to establish a community of practice enabling the new students to share solutions related to distance doctoral study. This case study included the entire cohort of a distance delivered Ed. D. in Agricultural Education administered jointly by Texas Tech and Texas A & M Universities. Data collection methods included a semi-structured telephone interview, containing an adapted Sense of Community Index and postings on a Wiki (editable web page). Data analysis produced a participants' profile and their use of web-based communication tools. This study found that (a) a variety of web-based tools enabled the students to connect with their cohort on a routine basis, (b) it is possible to establish a community of practice using a variety of web-based communication tools, (c) after one semester the cohort is an embryonic community of practice (d) the students were able to assist each other with concerns that helped them acclimate to learning online and their doctoral program, (e) students appreciate the flexibility that distance education offers but some prefer a traditional education, (f) students were frustrated with the technology during the first few weeks of their program, (g) new doctoral students desire instruction in the use of the course management system, the online library, and scholarly writing, (h) the students feel a strong sense of community, (i) use of web-based communication tools are vital as they assist in the student's learning, (j) students felt isolated from their cohort until they participated in a group project even though they had the use of web-based communication tools at their disposal. The results of this study suggest that opportunities for students to engage socially with their peers should be built into the design of online classes and degree programs. Future research is recommended to examine the sustainability and desirability of virtual communities of practice.

Book Implementing Constructivist Approach Into Online Course Designs in Distance Education Institute at Eastern Mediterranean University

Download or read book Implementing Constructivist Approach Into Online Course Designs in Distance Education Institute at Eastern Mediterranean University written by Zehra A. Gazi and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change and development in work settings for better working practice through projects has become essential. And, in this context, learning through working practice is constructed by participatory action research. This work-based research has a significant role to contribute innovative practice of Distance Education Institute at Eastern Mediterranean University by EUA norms. The research aimed to investigate implementing constructivist approach into online course designs to develop learning and skills of the online students based on teamwork inspiration within the institute. Action research approach employed in this qualitative research in order to provide insights on how to prepare and design online courses based on constructivist approach. Training, in-depth interviews, documentary analysis, focus group, research diary and semi-structured interviews were employed as data collection techniques to gather large amount of data from online tutors, and members of institute in relation to their collaborative efforts within the process. Furthermore, triangulated data were analyzed based on content analysis in this inductive journey. The results revealed that members and the tutors had no prior knowledge and experience on team work culture and the principles of constructivist approach into online course designs. In this respect, collaborative efforts and synergy power of the tutors within participatory action research resulted in better working performance for change and development research actions. This research is significant for considering change and development in working practice in relation to implementing constructivist approach into online course designs as it is one of the critical success factor for the quality in online practices. In addition, the research opens an academic debate which work based projects through participatory action research need to function in working practices to propose change and development for the quality improvements within higher education institutions. Action Research Cycle is appended.
