Altmann and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This case study investigated a peer mediation program at William Fremd High School in Palatine, Illinois. Peer mediation offers an opportunity for students to solve their disputes with the assistance of a student mediator. The peer mediation program at Fremd High School helps to foster skills that allow students to become successful problem solvers. The school reported a significant decrease in discipline referrals, after the implementation of the peer mediation program, and it was noted that the school climate was more peaceful. The design and operation of the Fremd High School peer mediation program could serve as a model for similar schools seeking to implement such a program."--Author's abstract.

Book excerpt: "This study focused on the newly implemented Peer Mediation program at Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake, Illinois, regarding its impact on participants' communication and decision making skills. Students today need to be taught effective conflict resolution techniques aplicable both inside and outside of school, skills which can be learned through the peer mediation process. I investigated what the peer mediation process was; how understanding of this process was demonstrated by peer mediators; and whether or not the process could be applied to other conflicts. The findings parallel more longitudinal studies, which show that the negotiation process can be learned and may be applied to other situations. Improved interpersonal communication skills among the mediators as a result from being involved with the peer mediation program was the predominant discovery."--Author's abstract.

This book was released on 2007-09-16 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a must for those who, like me, believe passionately both in the power of peer mediation...and in the urgency of spreading good practice in a society like ours, which is desperately searching for ways to be inclusive and at peace with itself.” Tim Brighouse, former Commissioner for London Schools “As the challenges facing young people grow so do the array of support mechanisms to help them. During my time as a Member of Parliament and as a Minister I saw many of the ideas and initiatives which were tackling this issue. I am attracted to the idea of peer mediation mainly because it goes beyond the question of how can we protect and help children when they have a difficulty, and develops those increasingly important social and emotional skills in all children” Estelle Morris, Former Secretary of State, DfES Why use peer mediation? What are the factors that influence its failure or success? Peer mediation as a form of conflict resolution is growing in popularity and usage, particularly within education. The number of schools using this method has increased, with many schools in the UK now using mediation to settle disputes both in school, and in the wider community. Based on the author’s extensive work on peer mediation, the book provides a thorough account of theory and practice relating to an approach that can enable young people to resolve their own disputes – and those of their peers. The author shows how peer mediation can be embraced by schools to strengthen student voice, behaviour management, active citizenship and inclusion, as well as how it can be neglected and fail to achieve these aims. Drawing on case studies of peer mediation in schools, the book offers an analysis of the work that has been carried out in this area. It revisits key debates in education such as citizenship, social inclusion, student voice and behaviour management in order to begin to address the questions surrounding this method of conflict resolution. Peer Mediation is key reading for primary and secondary school teachers, educational professionals, academics, policy-makers and those with an interest in practical peace making.

Book excerpt: For more than ten years peer mediation programs have been springing up in schools. Although they are begun with the highest hopes and best intentions, many programs falter in their second or third year, then disappear. What makes a program effective enough to endure year after year and become part of a school's culture? Peer Mediation is the story of how one successful program started in an urban elementary school-how it was designed, implemented, and maintained. Teacher and mediator Judith Ferrara explains mediation, what it means to start up a program, watch it grow, change, and endure. At the heart of this book are the voices of the students who volunteered to become peer mediators, learned to understand the mediation process, and worked to help shape the program. Their thoughts and reactions to the peer mediation program, their tenacity, and, above all, their ethic of caring will leave a strong impression. Peer Mediation demonstrates the need to listen to students, observe their responses to the program, and work with them to revise it in order to maintain it. Peer Mediation includes:strategies that may be used to implement and maintain a peer mediation program;vignettes in each chapter selected and interpreted to demonstrate what it can mean to adults and students who are part of a peer mediation program;suggestions for handling the problems that arise and changes that occur when peer mediation programs "start up";forms, checklists, and standards for preparing and assessing peer mediation programs;an annotated bibliography of mediation theory and practice, conflict resolution curriculum, and program materials.Because Peer Mediation follows one program from implementation through its third year, it will be a useful resource for guidance counselors, teachers, and administrators who wish to start up a program, or gain insight into how to maintain an existing one.

Abstract: ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to look at the implementation of a peer mediation programme in a Hong Kong secondary school. This qualitative study involving 19 peer mediators who came Form four and Form six discipline prefects, two programme advisors, four class teachers and services users from F.1 and F.2 schoolmates in a Hong Kong secondary school investigated their perception of a peer mediation to developmental guidance and its practices. Schools implementing a peer mediation programme were considered to have a both preventive and developmental guidance focus and practices. The findings also identified a number of important factors which facilitated the implementation and development of the peer mediation programme. This study used qualitative methods to examine the implementation of a peer mediation programme in a Hong Kong Secondary School. The school and the social worker jointly organized and held a series of training activities to the peer mediators and the peer mediator could learn conflict resolution and mediation techniques from the School based Conflict Resolution Training manual which is modified and quoted from the Peer Mediation Programme - Peer Mediators Training Manual to be iii organized and published by Hong Kong Family Welfare Society and sponsored by The Hong Kong Bank Foundation. The main targets of receiving the peer mediation services were mainly From one and From two students. In order to achieve an efficient and effective peer mediation, selecting peer mediators, the content of the training programme and how different parties perceive the service were very important. The findings also identified a number of important factors including comprehensive peer mediation training in which had to enhance communication skills; various strategies of promoting the peer mediation service to students; giving students a right to seek help from peer mediators directly; making students and teachers have a deeper understanding of the rational and effectiveness of a peer mediation service which facilitated the implementation and development of the peer mediation in the particular secondary school. Significantly, the peer mediation programme was able to help clients' to solve their conflicts at particular levels and also provide good opportunities for peer mediators to have personal growth. Book The Peer Mediation Process in Secondary Schools

Download or read book The Peer Mediation Process in Secondary Schools written by Fae Ernestine Samuels and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the practice and the impact of peer mediation in eight secondary schools. This research is the first to investigate peer mediation in secondary schools. In doing so, it sought to give the peer mediators and other students a "voice." The students explained the peer mediation process, the effects on their personal lives, relationships, school climate and families. The thirty-three participants of the study include eight mediators, two disputants, two non-disputants, six students who refused mediation, seven teachers, one non-teacher and seven administrators. Three students refused to be interviewed. All student participants were eighteen years of age when interviewed. The method employed is qualitative. A personal interview was conducted with each mediator and disputant to investigate what happens during the mediation process, their satisfaction with the process and the impact it is having on them and the school community. Teachers, coordinators of the peer mediation programs and administrators were also interviewed individually to get their perception of the program's impact on the mediators, disputants, other students and the school climate. Data gathered were analysed in four stages. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and the categories and themes were identified and sorted. The findings indicate that peer mediation provides one of the best opportunities for creating peaceful schools. The study is significant because it verifies and brings to the forefront ten issues that are important to the field of peer mediation and conflict resolution. The issues are that: peer mediators can peacefully resolve conflicts and they are exemplary student leaders; peer mediation promotes ethics, transforms lives, teaches lifelong skills, provides leadership, fellowship, growth and provides an alternative to suspension; peers trust their peers to resolve their problems; school violence is on the increase and there is a lack of support for peer mediation. The findings of this study warrant further investigation in three areas: peer mediators and other students who are between 14 and 17 years of age; the training programs; and the real cost to implement a program in a secondary school.
