Book excerpt: In 1662, Amy Denny and Rose Cullender were accused of witchcraft, and, in one of the most important of such cases in England, stood trial and were hanged in Bury St Edmunds. A Trial of Witches is a complete account of this sensational trial and an analysis of the court procedures, and the larger social, cultural and political concerns of the period. In a critique of the official process, the book details how the erroneous conclusions of the trial were achieved. The authors consider the key participants in the case, including the judge and medical witness, their institutional importance, their part in the fate of the women and their future careers. Through detailed research of primary sources, the authors explore the important implications of this case for the understanding of hysteria, group mentality, social forces and the witchcraft phenomenon as a whole.

Book Narratives of the Witchcraft Cases 1648 1706

Download or read book Narratives of the Witchcraft Cases 1648 1706 written by George Lincoln Burr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narratives of the Witchcraft Cases, 1648-1706 The first of the illustrations is a facsimile of the first page of the original manuscript of Cotton Mather's narrative of the case of Mercy Short, A Brand pluck'd out of the Burning. For the privilege of printing both the facsimile and the text we are indebted to the American Antiquarian Society, in whose library at Worcester the manuscript is preserved, and to Mr. Clarence S. Brigham, librarian of the society. The facsimile is slightly reduced. The second plate is intended to elucidate the question whether More Wonders of the Invisible World was written by Robert Calef the elder or by his son Robert Calef the younger. Most writers hitherto have attributed it to the younger Calef; Professor Burr may be regarded as having settled the question (pp. 291-295) in favor of the elder. The plate shows facsimiles of the following:(1) from the Mather-Calef paper of 1694-1695 (see p. 306, note 1), the last three or four lines of Mather's text, with the marginalia of Robert Calef at the side, and the first three or four lines of Calef's marginalia beneath - lines unquestionably penned by the author of More Wonders;(2) from the letter written to Lord Bellomont by that author, accompanying a copy of the book (see p. 292, note 1, below), the first three lines and the last, with signature;(3) from the appraisers' report of 1693 (ibid.), the signature;(4) from the coroner's verdict of 1696, the signature;(5) from the arbitrators' report of 1697, the first three or four lines and the signature - all these of the elder Robert;(6) from the selectman's report of 1717 (?), the lines showing it the elder Robert's as a selectman of Roxbury, with the lines at the end and the signature;(7) signature of Robert Calef the younger, 1708; (8)signature of Robert the younger, 1719, with the words adjoining it in the receipt. Book In Defense of Witches

Download or read book In Defense of Witches written by Mona Chollet and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mona Chollet's In Defense of Witches is a “brilliant, well-documented” celebration (Le Monde) by an acclaimed French feminist of the witch as a symbol of female rebellion and independence in the face of misogyny and persecution. Centuries after the infamous witch hunts that swept through Europe and America, witches continue to hold a unique fascination for many: as fairy tale villains, practitioners of pagan religion, as well as feminist icons. Witches are both the ultimate victim and the stubborn, elusive rebel. But who were the women who were accused and often killed for witchcraft? What types of women have centuries of terror censored, eliminated, and repressed? Celebrated feminist writer Mona Chollet explores three types of women who were accused of witchcraft and persecuted: the independent woman, since widows and celibates were particularly targeted; the childless woman, since the time of the hunts marked the end of tolerance for those who claimed to control their fertility; and the elderly woman, who has always been an object of at best, pity, and at worst, horror. Examining modern society, Chollet concludes that these women continue to be harrassed and oppressed. Rather than being a brief moment in history, the persecution of witches is an example of society’s seemingly eternal misogyny, while women today are direct descendants to those who were hunted down and killed for their thoughts and actions. With fiery prose and arguments that range from the scholarly to the cultural, In Defense of Witches seeks to unite the mythic image of the witch with modern women who live their lives on their own terms.

Book The Case That Foiled Fabian

Download or read book The Case That Foiled Fabian written by Simon Read and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Wednesday 14 February 1945, the body of Charles Walton was discovered on the lower slopes of Meon Hill near the sleepy Warwickshire village of Lower Quinton, his torso pinned to the ground by a pitchfork. Myths and rumours soon swirled about the crime. Accounts claim Walton, a retired labourer and a lifelong resident of Lower Quinton, was believed by many to be a clairvoyant who could talk to birds and exercise control over animals. It has even been reported that many villagers attributed Walton's death to ritual witchcraft. But what is fact and what is fiction? The most famous police officer in Britain, Chief Inspector Robert Fabian, was promptly dispatched by Scotland Yard to solve this increasingly peculiar and foreboding mystery. 'Fabian of the Yard' was not a man prone to superstition and had dealt with some of the most notorious killers of his time – but there was something strange about the Walton murder. Did the clues point to ritual witchcraft as the modus operandi, or was the black magic angle merely a ruse? With the villagers unable – or unwilling – to shed light on the matter, Fabian faced, for the only time in his glittering career, the daunting prospect of failure. The Case That Foiled Fabian lays out for the first time what actually happened and distills the truth from the many myths about this case that are today mistaken for facts.
