Book excerpt: At the start of book 2 in the Tales of Rome series, we find 13-year-old Bryn working a baker's shop in Rome but still dreaming of returning to his British homeland. Nero has been emperor for ten years and many fear him. Nero particularly dislikes Christians, who worship their own God instead of the emperor, and has had some arrested and killed. A great fire breaks out in the city, and Bryn and his friends escape to the outskirts, to the home of a rich slave-trader, Septimus. Bryn returns to the city to see the damage and finds a city in ruins. However, he also sees members of Nero's own Praetorian Guard setting fire to houses. Rumours fly that the Emperor has had the fire started deliberately in order to clear ground to build a grand new palace, but others blame the Christians. Bryn is amongst those arrested. Nero wants to round up a hundred Christians and have them set alight as a mighty spectacle. Will Bryn and his friends survive?

Book Slave Revolts in Antiquity

Download or read book Slave Revolts in Antiquity written by Theresa Urbainczyk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much has been written on Greek and Roman slavery, slave resistance has typically been dismissed as historically insignificant and those revolts that are documented are portrayed as wholly exceptional and resulting from peculiar historical circumstances that had little to do with the intrinsic views or organizational capabilities of the slaves themselves. In this book Theresa Urbainczyk challenges the current orthodoxy and argues that there were many more slave revolts than is usually assumed and they were far from insignificant historically. She carefully dissects ancient and modern interpretations to show that there was every reason for the writers who recorded and re-recorded the slave rebellions and wars to repress or to reconfigure any larger-scale slave resistance as something other than what it was. Further, she shows that we often have the accounts that we do because of the happenstance of certain ancient authors having been particularly interested in creating accounts of them for their own interests. Urbainczyk argues that we need to look beyond the canonical sources and episodes to see a bigger history of long-term resistance of slaves to their enslavement.

Book Indians of North America Miscellaneous Papers

Download or read book Indians of North America Miscellaneous Papers written by and published by . This book was released on 1620 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of miscellaneous papers concerning Indians of North America covers the period 1620 to 1895 and contains a folio volume of historical notes on the English and French settlement of North America, and the "state" of the Indian tribes of North America from 1620 to 1691. The manuscript was apparently written by a Mr. Burnet, who gave it to Thomas Jefferson in 1763, and includes chronological paragraph descriptions of historical events in three parallel columns. In 1982 Daniel Richter, a Daniels fellow at AAS, wrote the following about this folio volume: "The volume, in its broad outlines, presents an unexceptional chronicle of Euro-Indian relations in northeastern North America during the 17th century, which the anonymous author compiled largely from commonplace French and English published works and arranged--not very consistently--in three colums entitled 'English Discoveries & Settlements...'; 'French Discoveries & Settlements...'; and 'State of the Indian Tribes in North America.'"

Book excerpt: Spanning a thousand years, and following the shifting fortunes of two families though the ages, this is the epic saga of Rome, the city and its people. Weaving history, legend, and new archaeological discoveries into a spellbinding narrative, critically acclaimed novelist Steven Saylor gives new life to the drama of the city's first thousand years — from the founding of the city by the ill-fated twins Romulus and Remus, through Rome's astonishing ascent to become the capitol of the most powerful empire in history. Roma recounts the tragedy of the hero-traitor Coriolanus, the capture of the city by the Gauls, the invasion of Hannibal, the bitter political struggles of the patricians and plebeians, and the ultimate death of Rome's republic with the triumph, and assassination, of Julius Caesar. Witnessing this history, and sometimes playing key roles, are the descendents of two of Rome's first families, the Potitius and Pinarius clans: One is the confidant of Romulus. One is born a slave and tempts a Vestal virgin to break her vows. One becomes a mass murderer. And one becomes the heir of Julius Caesar. Linking the generations is a mysterious talisman as ancient as the city itself. Epic in every sense of the word, Roma is a panoramic historical saga and Saylor's finest achievement to date.

Book excerpt: Alara-a captive to a corrupt branch of the government-has found herself outside the walls of her prison, where she must learn to survive. Forced to navigate within a world she's never experienced, all while harnessing powers she can hardly control and barely understands just might be her ultimate test in life. When fate puts her within the path of Immortal beings with powers and senses unlike anything she's ever witnessed, Alara's mind, heart, and soul are challenged. Lines are drawn, lies are told, and truths are bottled up to protect the life she recently escaped and continues to run from. Romulus, leader of his species and king of the Eternal Guardians, has grown weary of his duties. For centuries, he and his people have fought for humanity in a war against a corrupt organization and the Rogue vampires they created. Their primary objective is to keep the humans safe, protected, and oblivious to the monsters that go bump in the night. Still, the repetitive nature of their position has caused Romulus to become somewhat resentful of the very humans he protects. Fate intervenes in the form of a woman who holds hope for his people. With powers that label her as a Kindred-someone capable of mating one of his kind-Rome attempts to teach and guide Alara, all while fighting an unholy attraction to her. What happens when their enemies catch up with them? And what happens when Romulus stops holding back from claiming the woman he senses as his fated mate? Will Alara have the heart to keep up her lies and half-truths from the man she's falling for? Or will she bear all and risk the future she could have? When secrets are revealed and people are pushed beyond their limits, will Rome and Alara stand together as one or allow the dark forces around them to win in the end?
