Download or read book Paulo Freire written by Walter Omar Kohan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paulo Freire (1921-1997) is one of the most widely read and studied educational thinkers of our time. His seminal works, including Pedagogy of the Oppressed, sparked the global social and philosophical movement of critical pedagogy and his ideas about the close ties between education and social justice and politics are as relevant today as they ever were. In this book, Walter Omar Kohan interweaves philosophical, educational, and biographical elements of Freire's life which prompt us to reflect on what we thought we knew about Freire, and also on the relationship between education and politics more broadly. It offers a new and timely reading of Freire's work and life. The book is structured around five key themes that provide a new perspective on Freire's work: life, equality, love, errantry and childhood. It includes a contextualization of Freire's work within the past and current political terrain in Brazil, and encourages educators to put themselves and their educational work into question by highlighting some of Freire's lesser known thoughts on time. The book also includes a conversation with Lutgardes Costa Freire, Paulo's Freire's youngest son, a dialogue with the co-founder of the Latin American Philosophy of Education Society, Jason Wozniak (West Chester University, USA), and a foreword by the renowned Freirean scholar and activist Antonia Darder (Loyola Marymount University, USA).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UNSOLVED HIJACKING OF FLIGHT 305/ How Justice Was Denied is a work of fiction wrapped around an actual event: the hijacking of Flight 305 between Portland, OR, and Sea-Tac Airport near Seattle, WA, November 24, 1971, by a man who came to be known as D. B. Cooper. This is the only unsolved case of air piracy in United States history. This is the story of a love so strong as to cause the compromise of principles and morals and to overcome the fear of death by jumping from an airplane into the freezing darkness. Our character, Dan Wilson, is backed into a corner when he discovers that Melita, the love of his life, will die without a costly liver transplant. He decides the only way to get a large sum of money fast is to hijack an airliner and demand a $200K ransom. After collecting the ransom money and surviving the jump, he struggles through the wilderness to his means of escape and makes it to Mexico only to lose all the money in a fiery crash. Still in a corner, he makes a deal with the devil. Will Melita, the love of Dannys life, be saved? Can Danny find redemption for his deeds? Will the drug lord, Luis Esperanza, be brought to justice? Who was this Dan Cooper? What really caused him to risk his life for $200K? Did he die in the wilderness, as many in the F.B.I. believe? If he did survive, where did he go? What happened to the bulk of the money? Many questions.few answers. If you like a tale of love and adventure, this book is for you. This is a plausible story and I hope for you, an enjoyable read! Burt H. Slaughter
Download or read book 1984 Nineteen Eighty four written by George Orwell and published by Landmark. This book was released on 2022-04-27 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book The Last Supper of Chicano Heroes written by José Antonio Burciaga and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely considered one of the most important voices in the Chicano literary canon, José Antonio Burciaga was a pioneer who exposed inequities and cultural difficulties through humor, art, and deceptively simple prose. In this anthology and tribute, Mimi R. Gladstein and Daniel Chacón bring together dozens of remarkable examples of Burciaga’s work. His work never demonstrates machismo or sexism, as he believed strongly that all Chicano voices are equally valuable. Best known for his books Weedee Peepo, Drink Cultura, and Undocumented Love, Burciaga was also a poet, cartoonist, founding member of the comedy troupe Cultura Clash, and a talented muralist whose well-known work The Last Supper of Chicano Heroes became almost more famous than the man. This first and only collection of Burciaga’s work features thirty-eight illustrations and incorporates previously unpublished essays and drawings, including selections from his manuscript “The Temple Gang,” a memoir he was writing at the time of his death. In addition, Gladstein and Chacón address Burciaga’s importance to Chicano letters. A joy to read, this rich compendium is an important contribution not only to Chicano literature but also to the preservation of the creative, spiritual, and political voice of a talented and passionate man.
