This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Campaign With the Turks in Asia, Vol. 2 of 2 Women were running wildly from house to house, striving to comfort each other, whilst the men actually laid aside their pipes, and meditated a grand retreat on Erzeroum. In my quarter of the town, which, being nearest to the plain, would have been the first menaced by the enemy, the excite ment was immense. A few families packed up their bedding, and, loading their children and valuables on the backs of donkeys and oxen, took their departure for the neighbouring villages. The heads of the army were in a pitiable condition, and on that day General Guyon was, for once, permitted to take the supreme direction of matters in Kars. Troops were ordered to man the fortifications on the Kara-dagh and the heights above the town, whilst fresh entrenchments were commenced along the plain. The soldiers obeyed with alacrity, and awaited the approach of the Russians with confi dence from behind their tabias or earthworks. For an hour the most ludicrous terror reigned in the upper ranks of the army, and naturally amongst the townspeople and the civil employés of the war administration. The inhabitants of a town threatened with an assault are not expected to present a very cheerful appearance, and the good people of Kars took no pains to conceal their real sentiments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The City of the Sultan, Vol. 1 of 2: And Domestic Manners of the Turks, in 1836 These are the briars which beset the way-side of the stranger in Turkey. He has not only to contend with the unaccustomed language and manners of the natives - to fling from him his European prejudices - and to learn to look can didly and dispassionately on a state of society, differing so widely from that which he has left - but when the wearied spirit would fain fall back, and repose itself for a while among more familiar and congenial habits, it has previously to undergo an ordeal as unexpected as it is irritating; and from which it requires no incon siderable portion of moral courage to escape unshackled. Book Russian Soviet Unconventional Wars in the Caucasus Central Asia and Afghanistan Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Russian Soviet Unconventional Wars in the Caucasus Central Asia and Afghanistan Illustrated Edition written by Dr. Robert F. Baumann and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Includes 12 maps and 4 tables] In recent years, the U.S. Army has paid increasing attention to the conduct of unconventional warfare. However, the base of historical experience available for study has been largely American and overwhelmingly Western. In Russian-Soviet Unconventional Wars in the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Afghanistan, Dr. Robert F. Baumann makes a significant contribution to the expansion of that base with a well-researched analysis of four important episodes from the Russian-Soviet experience with unconventional wars. Primarily employing Russian sources, including important archival documents only recently declassified and made available to Western scholars, Dr. Baumann provides an insightful look at the Russian conquest of the Caucasian mountaineers (1801-59), the subjugation of Central Asia (1839-81), the reconquest of Central Asia by the Red Army (1918-33), and the Soviet war in Afghanistan (1979-89). The history of these wars—especially as it relates to the battle tactics, force structure, and strategy employed in them—offers important new perspectives on elements of continuity and change in combat over two centuries. This is the first study to provide an in-depth examination of the evolution of the Russian and Soviet unconventional experience on the predominantly Muslim southern periphery of the former empire. There, the Russians encountered fierce resistance by peoples whose cultures and views of war differed sharply from their own. Consequently, this Leavenworth Paper addresses not only issues germane to combat but to a wide spectrum of civic and propaganda operations as well.

Book Migration Histories of the Medieval Afroeurasian Transition Zone

The present volume for the first time systematically covers migration histories of the regions between the Mediterranean and Central Asia and between Eastern Europe and the Indian Ocean in the centuries from Late Antiquity up to the early modern era. Within this framework, specialists from Byzantine, Islamic, Medieval and African history provide detailed analyses of specific regions and groups of migrants, both elites and non-elites as well as voluntary and involuntary. Thereby, also current debates of migration studies are enriched with a new dimension of deep historical time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1683, an Ottoman army that stretched from horizon to horizon set out to seize the "Golden Apple," as Turks referred to Vienna. The ensuing siege pitted battle-hardened Janissaries wielding seventeenth-century grenades against Habsburg armies, widely feared for their savagery. The walls of Vienna bristled with guns as the besieging Ottoman host launched bombs, fired cannons, and showered the populace with arrows during the battle for Christianity's bulwark. Each side was sustained by the hatred of its age-old enemy, certain that victory would be won by the grace of God. The Great Siege of Vienna is the centerpiece for historian Andrew Wheatcroft's richly drawn portrait of the centuries-long rivalry between the Ottoman and Habsburg empires for control of the European continent. A gripping work by a master historian, The Enemy at the Gate offers a timely examination of an epic clash of civilizations.
