Book Language Contact Continuity and Change in the Genesis of Modern Hebrew

Download or read book Language Contact Continuity and Change in the Genesis of Modern Hebrew written by Edit Doron and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of Modern Hebrew as a spoken language constitutes a unique event in modern history: a language which for generations only existed in the written mode underwent a process popularly called “revival”, acquiring native speakers and becoming a language spoken for everyday use. Despite the attention it has drawn, this particular case of language-shift, which differs from the better-documented cases of creoles and mixed languages, has not been discussed within the framework of the literature on contact-induced change. The linguistic properties of the process have not been systematically studied, and the status of the emergent language as a (dis)continuous stage of its historical sources has not been evaluated in the context of other known cases of language shift. The present collection presents detailed case studies of the syntactic evolution of Modern Hebrew, alongside general theoretical discussion, with the aim of bringing the case of Hebrew to the attention of language-contact scholars, while bringing the insights of the literature on language contact to help shed light on the case of Hebrew.

Download or read book Continuity Theory written by Louis Nel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed, self-contained theory of continuous mappings. It is mainly addressed to students who have already studied these mappings in the setting of metric spaces, as well as multidimensional differential calculus. The needed background facts about sets, metric spaces and linear algebra are developed in detail, so as to provide a seamless transition between students' previous studies and new material. In view of its many novel features, this book will be of interest also to mature readers who have studied continuous mappings from the subject's classical texts and wish to become acquainted with a new approach. The theory of continuous mappings serves as infrastructure for more specialized mathematical theories like differential equations, integral equations, operator theory, dynamical systems, global analysis, topological groups, topological rings and many more. In light of the centrality of the topic, a book of this kind fits a variety of applications, especially those that contribute to a better understanding of functional analysis, towards establishing an efficient setting for its pursuit.

Book Problems in Mathematical Analysis Continuity and differentiation

Download or read book Problems in Mathematical Analysis Continuity and differentiation written by Wiesława J. Kaczor and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We learn by doing. We learn mathematics by doing problems. And we learn more mathematics by doing more problems. This is the sequel to Problems in Mathematical Analysis I (Volume 4 in the Student Mathematical Library series). If you want to hone your understanding of continuous and differentiable functions, this book contains hundreds of problems to help you do so. The emphasis here is on real functions of a single variable. The book is mainly geared toward students studying the basic principles of analysis. However, given its selection of problems, organization, and level, it would be an ideal choice for tutorial or problem-solving seminars, particularly those geared toward the Putnam exam. It is also suitable for self-study. The presentation of the material is designed to help student comprehension, to encourage them to ask their own questions, and to start research. The collection of problems will also help teachers who wish to incorporate problems into their lectures. The problems are grouped into sections according to the methods of solution. Solutions for the problems are provided.

Book Revolutions and Continuity in Greek Mathematics

Download or read book Revolutions and Continuity in Greek Mathematics written by Michalis Sialaros and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a number of leading scholars working in the field of ancient Greek mathematics to present their latest research. In their respective area of specialization, all contributors offer stimulating approaches to questions of historical and historiographical ‘revolutions’ and ‘continuity’. Taken together, they provide a powerful lens for evaluating the applicability of Thomas Kuhn’s ideas on ‘scientific revolutions’ to the discipline of ancient Greek mathematics. Besides the latest historiographical studies on ‘geometrical algebra’ and ‘premodern algebra’, the reader will find here some papers which offer new insights into the controversial relationship between Greek and pre-Hellenic mathematical practices. Some other contributions place emphasis on the other edge of the historical spectrum, by exploring historical lines of ‘continuity’ between ancient Greek, Byzantine and post-Hellenic mathematics. The terminology employed by Greek mathematicians, along with various non-textual and material elements, is another topic which some of the essays in the volume explore. Finally, the last three articles focus on a traditionally rich source on ancient Greek mathematics; namely the works of Plato and Aristotle.

Book Leibniz Representation Continuity and the Spatiotemporal

Download or read book Leibniz Representation Continuity and the Spatiotemporal written by D.A. Anapolitanos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anapolitanos critically examines and evaluates three basic characteristics of the Leibnizian metaphysical system: Leibniz's version of representation; the principle of continuity; and space, time, and the phenomenally spatio-temporal. Chapter I discusses representation, especially as it refers to the connection between the real and the phenomenal levels of Leibniz's system. Chapter II examines the principle of continuity, including continuity as a general feature of every level of Leibniz's metaphysics. The position adopted is that the problem of the composition of the continuum played a central role on the development of Leibniz's non-spatial and non-temporal monadic metaphysics. The machinery developed is then used to offer a new interpretation of Leibniz' metaphysics of space and time. The notion of indirect representation is used to construct appropriate models that clarify the nature of the correspondence between the real and the phenomenal levels in the case of the relations `spatially between' and `temporally between', as well as in the cases of spatial and temporal density. Finally, Leibniz's solution to the problem of the continuum is discussed, arguing that it is not entirely satisfactory. A non-anachronistic alternative is proposed, compatible with Leibniz's metaphysics of substance.

Book Separate and Joint Continuity

Download or read book Separate and Joint Continuity written by Jiling Cao and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Separate and Joint Continuity presents and summarises the main ideas and theorems that have been developed on this topic, which lies at the interface between General Topology and Functional Analysis (and the geometry of Banach spaces in particular). The book offers detailed, self-contained proofs of many of the key results. Although the development of this area has now slowed to a point where an authoritative book can be written, many important and significant problems remain open, and it is hoped that this book may serve as a springboard for future and emerging researchers into this area. Furthermore, it is the strong belief of the authors that this area of research is ripe for exploitation. That is to say, it is their belief that many of the results contained in this monograph can, and should be, applied to other areas of mathematics. It is hoped that this monograph may provide an easily accessible entry point to the main results on separate and joint continuity for mathematicians who are not directly working in this field, but who may be able to exploit some of the deep results that have been developed over the past 125 years. Features Provides detailed, self-contained proofs of many of the key results in the area Suitable for researchers and postgraduates in topology and functional analysis Is the first book to offer a detailed and up-to-date summary of the main ideas and theorems on this topic

Book Continuity Integration and Fourier Theory

Download or read book Continuity Integration and Fourier Theory written by Adriaan C. Zaanen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a textbook for graduate or advanced undergraduate students in mathematics and (or) mathematical physics. It is not primarily aimed, therefore, at specialists (or those who wish to become specialists) in integra tion theory, Fourier theory and harmonic analysis, although even for these there might be some points of interest in the book (such as for example the simple remarks in Section 15). At many universities the students do not yet get acquainted with Lebesgue integration in their first and second year (or sometimes only with the first principles of integration on the real line ). The Lebesgue integral, however, is indispensable for obtaining a familiarity with Fourier series and Fourier transforms on a higher level; more so than by us ing only the Riemann integral. Therefore, we have included a discussion of integration theory - brief but with complete proofs - for Lebesgue measure in Euclidean space as well as for abstract measures. We give some emphasis to subjects of which an understanding is necessary for the Fourier theory in the later chapters. In view of the emphasis in modern mathematics curric ula on abstract subjects (algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, algebraic number theory) on the one hand and computer science on the other, it may be useful to have a textbook available (not too elementary and not too spe cialized) on the subjects - classical but still important to-day - which are mentioned in the title of this book.
