Book excerpt: The Byzantine period is one of the less known periods in the history of Palestine. On the one hand, there is a wealth of archaeological evidence, albeit not in a final form; while, on the other hand, there are few historical sources. There is evidence of prosperity, but also testimonies of economic and demographic deterioration. The book offers a comprehensive historical framework describing the period, based on all the available material. In the absence of historical sources, full use must be made of the archaeological data; until the present, however, chronological definitions have not been determined for "Byzantine" pottery vessels. The book makes use of a new methodological tool: quantitative numismatic data.

Book Byzantine Coins

Download or read book Byzantine Coins written by George Eugene Bates and published by Cambridge : Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1971 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the summers from 1958 through 1968 a Harvard-Cornell team of archeologists excavated the site of ancient Sardis, metropolis of Asia Minor and fabled capital of the Lydian Kingdom. Byzantine Coins is the first volume in a series of reports and monographs in which the results of these excavations will be published. George Bates provides a catalogue of 1,234 coins and one seal dating from A.D. 491 to 1282. His monograph meticulously describes each coin and contains sharply detailed reproductions of the 121 best preserved coins as well as maps of the area and notes which describe where each coin was found.

Book Yassi Ada

Download or read book Yassi Ada written by George Fletcher Bass and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book forms a final report on the underwater excavations I directed at Yassi Ada, Turkey, during the summers of 1961 through 1964 for the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania. The excavation was the first to have been completed on the floor of the Mediterranean of a wreck with substantial hull remains. This pioneering work required the ingenuity, effort, and generosity of many people and institutions. The seventh- century ship was chosen for primary excavation not only for its lesser depth, which allowed longer working dives, but also because Throckmorton had uncovered traces of its timbers just beneath the sand and because it was more intelligible from the outset: a stack of concreted iron anchors, lying across the cargo at its upper end, suggested the forward part of the ship pointing up the slope, toward Yassi Ada, while a mass of broken terra-cotta tiles and cooking ware suggested the galley--and, presumably, the stern--at the deeper end of the site.

Book excerpt: This book examines the remarkable Velestino hoard, found in Thessaly in the 1920s, and analyses the light that this collection of artifacts sheds on a poorly studied period of Byzantine history, and on largely neglected aspects of Byzantine civilization. Many collections of Byzantine gold- and silverware, such as Vrap and Seuso, have been surrounded by controversy. None, however, has been under more suspicion than the Velestino hoard, particularly with regards to its authenticity. The hoard contains no gold and no silver, and is in fact a collection of bronze and leaden plaques, some with human, and others with animal or geometric representations. The authors examine three distinct aspects of the hoard: the iconography of its components, the method of its production, and the function of those components. The conclusions that they reached provide valuable new insights into eighth-century Byzantine culture. The book explores the Byzantine cultural and political context of the Velestino hoard and will appeal to historians and art historians of early Byzantium, as well as archaeologists and historians of early medieval technologies.
