Book A Bug s Eye View of the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Bug s Eye View of the War Classic Reprint written by Charles G. Macarthur and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bug's-Eye View of the War The writer of this rather botchy yarn had a grandfather who served in the Civil War. It was the custom of the old gentleman to relate, with some show of pride, incidents of that conflict in which he usually figured as a principal. So breathless was his recital of heroism that it nearly landed him in Congress at one time, although certain of his political opponents circulated a report at the time of his candidacy that grandpa broke his shin on the way to the concentration camp and never shouldered anything more murderous than a borrowed umbrella. While these base insinuations never prevailed against the old boy's sterling reputation in the community, how idle would they have been had he kept a diary and had it printed and passed around! Lest it be forgotten, here is your record, set up in imperishable type - alms for oblivion. Changing points of view and lack of contemporaneous records have made it imperfect in many ways; but Memory has been a friend. I aim to suggest, rather than narrate, and perhaps the incidents that have been omitted will be recalled by their associations in these pages. It is called a bug's-eye view of the war because in reality that was our viewpoint. Food and sleep and work were our chief concerns, Mr. Wilson's speeches to the contrary, notwithstanding. If at any time we were crusaders, our objective was a ration dump; and nearly all of us felt that our obligations to Old Man La Fayette were discharged along with our food on the transport going over. Communiques and the progress of war loans seldom excited our interest, if at all. This is not an indictment of our patriotism, for we decided upon the purposes of the war long before we enlisted. No attempt, therefore, has been made to tell the story of the war. Only when it has been necessary has reference to it been made at all. This is only a simple tale of the smiles and tears and schoolboy scraps the bloomin' war occasioned in a little group of men banded together for its duration. Histories of what the millions did are already on sale, and reference to the war's larger events would be tiresome repetition here. Book Dictionary of Midwestern Literature Volume 1

Download or read book Dictionary of Midwestern Literature Volume 1 written by Philip A. Greasley and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-30 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Midwestern Literature, Volume One, surveys the lives and writings of nearly 400 Midwestern authors and identifies some of the most important criticism of their writings. The Dictionary is based on the belief that the literature of any region simultaneously captures the experience and influences the worldview of its people, reflecting as well as shaping the evolving sense of individual and collective identity, meaning, and values. Volume One presents individual lives and literary orientations and offers a broad survey of the Midwestern experience as expressed by its many diverse peoples over time.Philip A. Greasley's introduction fills in background information and describes the philosophy, focus, methodology, content, and layout of entries, as well as criteria for their inclusion. An extended lead-essay, "The Origins and Development of the Literature of the Midwest," by David D. Anderson, provides a historical, cultural, and literary context in which the lives and writings of individual authors can be considered. This volume is the first of an ambitious three-volume series sponsored by the Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature and created by its members. Volume Two will provide similar coverage of non-author entries, such as sites, centers, movements, influences, themes, and genres. Volume Three will be a literary history of the Midwest. One goal of the series is to build understanding of the nature, importance, and influence of Midwestern writers and literature. Another is to provide information on writers from the early years of the Midwestern experience, as well as those now emerging, who are typically absent from existing reference works.

Download or read book Tommy French written by Julian Walker and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2021-05-12 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Napoo’, ‘compray’, ‘san fairy ann’, ‘toot sweet’ are anglicized French phrases that came into use on the Western Front during the First World War as British troops struggled to communicate in French. Over four years of war they created an extraordinary slang which reflects the period and brings the conflict to mind whenever it is heard today. Julian Walker, in this original and meticulously researched book, explores the subject in fascinating detail. In the process he gives us an insight into the British soldiers’ experience in France during the war and the special language they invented in order to cope with their situation. He shows how French place-names were anglicized as were words for food and drink, and he looks at what these slang terms tell us about the soldiers’ perception of France, their relationship with the French and their ideas of home. He traces the spread of ‘Tommy French’ back to the Home Front, where it was popularized in songs and on postcards, and looks at the French reaction to the anglicization of their language.
