Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis a parametric study of various broadband microstrip patch antennas and a dual band patch antenna is investigated. The broadband patch antennas studied in this thesis are: a rectangular microstrip patch antenna with a U-shaped slot, a rectangular microstrip patch antenna with a circular arc slot, a circular patch antenna with a circular arc slot and a circular patch antenna with a circular arc slot and L-shaped probe. The feed for these antennas is a coaxial probe feed. Different parameters such as probe radius, probe location, substrate height, width of the slot and location of the slot are considered in the parametric study. The resonance behavior of a rectangular patch a tenna with a U-slot and a rectangular patch antenna with a circular arc slot is also investigated. The radiation patterns, gain patterns and the return loss of the broadband antennas are also discussed. For dual band operation, a new coaxially-fed microstrip patch antenna with two asymmetric U-shaped slots is discussed in this thesis. Two approximate equations for the resonant frequencies based on the surface current distribution are presented. The simulation results of the radiation patterns, gain patterns and the return loss of the antenna are presented. In addition, a single U-slot patch antenna, a rectangular microstrip patch antenna with a circular arc slot, and dual U-slots patch antenna are fabricated and tested in the Antenna Laboratory at the University of Manitoba. The simulation and experimental results are then compared.

The development of MPA enters its prosperous era after the debut of the first practical microstrip antenna in 1970s. Since then, microstrip patch antennas have been widely employed in modern wireless communication systems. It is because microstrip patch antennas have many advantages of low profile, light weight, easy fabrication, conformal and easy integration with integrated circuits. However, conventional patch antennas suffer from narrow bandwidth and large size. Along with the rising demand for wider bandwidth and smaller size, wide-band and compact patch antennas have been developed extensively. A technique of broad banding by slot loading is preferred. By means, slots are cut into rectangular patch antenna in order to cut the current flow lines, so that higher frequency modes can be perturbed and ratio of two frequencies can be adjusted by adjusting the slot size. Then to reduce the size of the antenna the loading of shorting pins was introduced. This type of antenna is often known as PIFA. Due to its compact size, PIFA is used in mobile and wireless communication.

Book excerpt: Due to the recent interest in broadband antennas a microstrip patch antenna was developed to meet the need for a cheap, low profile, broadband antenna. This antenna could be used in a wide range of applications such as in the communications industry for cell phones or satellite communication. Particle Swarm Optimization was used to design the dual-linear polarization broadband microstrip antenna and impedance matching network. This optimization method greatly reduced the time needed to find viable antenna parameters. A dual input patch antenna with over 30% bandwidth in the X-band was simulated using Ansoft's High Frequency Structural Simulator (HFSS) in conjunction with Particle Swarm Optimization. A single input and a dual input antenna was then fabricated. The fabricated antennas were composed of stacked microstrip patches over a set of bowtie apertures in the ground plane that were perpendicular to one another. A dual offset microstrip feedline was used to feed the aperture. Two different layers were used for the microstrip feedline of each polarization. The resulting measured impedance bandwidth was even wider than predicted. The antenna pattern was measured at several frequencies over the antenna bandwidth and was found to have good gain, consistent antenna patterns and low cross polarization.
