Book A Brief Treatise on Geology Or Facts Suggestions and Inductions in That Science Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Brief Treatise on Geology Or Facts Suggestions and Inductions in That Science Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Biblicus Delvinus and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Treatise on Geology, or Facts, Suggestions, and Inductions in That Science, Vol. 2 Whoever enters deeply into the study of Natural Philosophy, with an unbiassed and devotional turn of mind, will perceive that there exists a remarkable connexion between the scriptural records of such philosophy, and the discoveries of modern science, especially in those relating to Geology. As in the prophetic declarations of the Bible, the truth of God's word has been demonstrated by clearer discoveries of the actual fulfilment of those prophecies, so science, if rightly applied will elucidate and become as it were the handmaid and illustrator of divine revelation, leading us to repose an implicit trust in the word of that Being, who in the beginning created all things, and pronounced them "very good." Still, we are able to reason correctly on this subject, for we have many sources of information and ample means of perusing the internal structure of our globe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology, Vol. 2: Contributions to the Palaeontology and Petrology of South Victoria Land The publication of the second volume of the Geology of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1907 - 1909 has been considerably delayed through several causes, chief among which are the departure of Sir Ernest Shackleton on his present Antarctic Expedition and above all the Great War. The latter has been such an obsession and has so wholly claimed the active services of both of us that it has been found to be quite impossible under the circumstances to summarize and modify many of the statements in Vol. I. We must therefore be content with touching on just a few salient points. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Revelation: Or the Ancient History of the Earth But, it may be asked, why should two such incongruous topics be set down for discussion side by side? To an swer this question is to explain the scope and design of the present work. We are not going to write a Manual of Geology; nor yet a Treatise on Revelation. Taken sepa rately, these two subjects have been handled with eminent skill and ability; the one by the votaries of Science, the other by the friends of Theology. It is our purpose to con sider them not so much in themselves as in their mutual relations to compare the conclusions of Geology with the truths of Revelation; and to inquire if it be possible to accept the one and yet not to abandon the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geological Facts, or the Crust of the Earth, What It Is, and What Are Its Uses I do not pretend to teach the Science of Geology; I aspire simply to give a taste for this noble and elevating physical study; and, im perfect as this little manual, written in the few hours of capricious leisure snatched from an incessant strain of engagements, must be, I shall only be too happy, if one and another lay aside my book, and go up higher to Lyell, Sedgwick, Buckland, Murchison, Ansted, Miller. Men of science, to render themselves worthy of the licence given them in what they communicate to the world, should carefully distinguish between truths which are definitely established by unquestion able proof, and ideas which are as yet mere problems or opinions. Book Contributions to Economic Geology 1908 Vol 2

Download or read book Contributions to Economic Geology 1908 Vol 2 written by Marius R. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-15 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Economic Geology, 1908, Vol. 2: Part II. Mineral FuelsThe first or dominant factor was the determination of the character and the valuation of the public land. These determinations were made wholly for the use of the Government itself in disposing of its mineral land. The second or general investigation of the mineral resources of the country was made for the benefit of the public at large and the results of this work are embraced in the series of reports of which this volume is one. The order in which the fields are exam ined depends entirely on the needs of the Government in disposing of its land now on the market, but in general the more important fields in the public-land States have been examined first. The work has been done under the general direction of the writer, who has been most ably assisted in the coal work by Cassius A. Fisher and all the men engaged in the work. It is impossible to enumerate the services performed by each man, but the success of the work has been due to the individual efforts of every member of the force and also to the hearty cooperative or team work without which it would have been impossible to carry on the work successfully. Although economic questions had to be given prominence, the writer wishes to congratulate each geologist on the amount of scientific data which have been accumulated and on the permanent value of the results and their bearing on the vexed question of the stratig raphy of the American Mesozoic and Tertiary rocks. The writer desires particularly to acknowledge his indebtedness to T. W. Stanton and F. H. Knowlton, who have so ably assisted in field and office in collecting and interpreting the fossils associated with the coal beds. This work has been invaluable, for without it the tangled problems of correlation and stratigraphy could not have been solved. For forty years the age of the coal-bearing rocks of the Rocky Mountain States has been in dispute, and while it can not be claimed that the question is settled, still the Survey's systematic examination of the coal fields during the last three years, in connection with the classification of the lands, has gradually brought order out of chaos. Now the end seems to be nearly in sight, and it is confidently believed that a few years' work will completely solve this perplexing problem.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illogical Geology: The Weakest Point in the Evolution Theory This book is not written especially for geologists or other scientists as such, though it deals with the question which it discusses from a purely scientfic standpoint, and presupposes a good general knowledge Of the rocks and of current theories. It is addressed rather to that large class of readers to whom geology is only an incident in larger problems, and who are not quite wholly satisfied with those explanations of the universe which are now commonly accepted on the testimony of biological science. I am free to say that my own conviction Of the higher value and surer truth Of other data outside of the biological sciences have always been given formative power in my own private Opinions, and that in this way I have long held that there must be something wrong with the Evolution Theory, and also that there must be a surer way of gauging the value of that Theory, even from the scientific standpoint, than the long devious processes connected with Darwinism and biology. Some years ago, when compelled to investigate the subject more fully than I had hitherto done, I discovered, somewhat to my own surprise, the phenomenal weakness of the geological argument. The results of that investigation have grown into the present work. Though mostly critical and analytic, it is not wholly so. But so far as it is constructive there is one virtue which can rightly be claimed for it. It is at least an honest effort to study the foundation facts of geology from the inductive standpoint, and whether or not I have succeeded in this, it is, so far as I know, the only work published in the English or any other language which does not treat the science of geology more or less as a cosmogony.
