Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Text-Book of Logic and Mental Philosophy These pages are a modest contribution towards the accomplishment of an important purpose. They are written in compliance with an earnest desire repeatedly expressed in the solemn utterances of our venerated Supreme Pontiff Leo XIII. "The more active," he says, "the enemies of religion are to teach the unlearned, the young especially, what clouds their intellect and corrupts their morals, the more should you exert yourselves to establish not only a well-adapted and solid method of instruction, but a method in perfect conformity with the Catholic faith, especially as regards Mental Philosophy, on which the right teaching of all the other sciences in a great measure depends - a Philosophy which shall prepare the way for Divine Revelation instead of aiming at its overthrow." Thus spoke the Holy Father in his Encyclical "Inscrutabili" at the opening of his Pontificate. What this Philosophy should be, he soon after explained in a special Encyclical "On the Higher Studies." It should be the Philosophy of the Schoolmen, the system founded upon the teachings of Aristotle, which was carried to its perfection by St. Thomas in the thirteenth century, and which has held its place in most of the Catholic Colleges and Universities to the present day. It embodies a thorough course of Logic and Metaphysics, expressed in clear, concise language, and is printed with a care for those details- division of questions, diversity of type, accentuation of paragraphs, etc.- which go to make up a text-book, and cannot fail to arrest and fix the attention of the reader. Needless to say, the Encyclical of the Holy Father has been the inspiration of the learned author, and the philosophy of St. Thomas permeates the whole work. We feel assured it will meet with a hearty welcome in all our schools and colleges.- Ave Maria. Facsimile edition.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Philosophy: Including the Intellect, Sensibilities, and Will It is much easier to decide what a work on mental fiance ought to be, than to produce such a work. It should be comprehensive and complete, treating at all that properly pertains to Psychology, giving to every part its due proportion and development. It should treat the various topics presented, in a thorough and scientific manner. It should be conversant with the literature of the department, placing the student in' possession, not only of the true doctrines, but, to some extent also, of the history of those doctrines, showing laim what has been held and taught by others upon the points in question. In style it should be clear, perspicuous, concise, yet not so barren of ornament as to be destitute of interest to the reader. Download or read book The Human Mind written by Edward John Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward John Hamilton's "The Human Mind: A Treatise in Mental Philosophy" is one man's personal philosophy of a metaphysical system and human thought. Hamilton's work was written with the goal of being used as a philosophy textbook. "The Human Mind" is a massive volume that spans over 700 pages and deals with a wide range of topics. The book begins with Hamilton offering a definition of mental philosophy, which is an important place to start and helps to provide the reader with the necessary context from which to approach the subject. The author tackles a wide range of subjects throughout the book, mostly focused on the relationship between the mind and the physical body and human brain. Included chapters separately discuss human intellect, the objectivity of thought, human senses, association and suggestion, memory, the rational faculty, and probable reasoning, among many more topics. Each chapter is written so as to stand alone from the others, however the reader will likely find it necessary to read the complete work in order to truly grasp the author's philosophy. "The Human Mind" is an impressive work of modern philosophy. Hamilton is clearly a student of philosophy, as his work frequently references many of the great philosophical works of the past. Despite the size of the volume, Hamilton's style and the formatting of the book into short chapters make this an easily readable text. Readers interested in philosophy of mind will find "The Human Mind: A Treatise in Mental Philosophy" to be a pleasant read. While Edward Hamilton is not remembered as a great philosopher, the author has pieced together an interesting personal philosophy, and one that deserves to be read by students of modern philosophical writings. Book Elements of Mental Philosophy

Download or read book Elements of Mental Philosophy written by Thomas Cogswell Upham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Mental Philosophy: Abridged and Designed as a Text Book for Academies and High Schools It has been my desire and endeavor, ' to give a concise, but cor rect view of the prominent principles of Mental Philosophy, so far as they seemed at present to be settled. The statement of these principles is attended with a perspicuous summary of the facts and arguments, on which they are based; together with occasional re marks ou the objections, which have been made from time to time. In selecting facts in confirmation of the principles laid down, I have sought those, which not only had a relation to the point in hand, but which promised a degree of interest for young minds. Simplicity and uniformity of style has been aimed at, although in a few instan ces the statements of the writers referred to have been admitted with only slight variations, when it was thought they had been peculiarly happy in them. As my sole object was the good of young men, I did not feel at liberty to prejudice the general design, by rejecting the facts, arguments, and in some cases even the expressions of others. Book A Brief Text Book of Moral Philosophy

Download or read book A Brief Text Book of Moral Philosophy written by Charles Coppens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Text-Book of Moral Philosophy This "Brief Text-Book of Moral Philosophy" is a companion volume to the author's " Brief Text-Book of Logic and Mental Philosophy," lately published and already extensively used in Academies and other educational institutions. The author's aim is to present to students and readers - to such, especially, as arc unfamiliar with the Latin language - a brief yet clear outline of the system of Ethics taught in Catholic Colleges, Seminaries and Universities. This system is based on the philosophy of Aristotle. Questions of Ethics, which in former times were left to the close scientific treatment of specialists, are at the present day freely discussed among all classes of society - in newspapers and popular magazines, in the workshop and in the parlor. Extravagant notions of individual and social rights are circulated, while the rash speculations of so-called scientists are sapping in many minds the very foundations of morality. Never before has there been a more urgent call on the part of the people for the lucid exposition and the correct application of sound moral principles. In this sad confusion of thought, no small utility will be found in a clear, simple, systematic explanation of the ethical doctrines taught by the greatest minds of the past ages, and lately most highly recommended by our Supreme Pontiff, the illustrious Leo. XIII. Such an exposition the author has endeavored to present in this little volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Mental Philosophy, Vol. 2 of 2: In Two Parts The attempt made in the following pages to determine the meaning of some of the principal terms employed in Philosophy, may, to some, appear an ambitious undertaking; while, to others, it may seem merely a verbal affair. If to emulate the Great of old he ambition, to that the author must plead guilty; for Aristotle himself composed a Philosophical Vocabulary; and, on the other hand, that the object of such a work is useful and dignified, will be allowed by those who are best acquainted with the difficulties of Philosophy. I may mention in particular two distinguished philosophers of the present day, who have thus expressed themselves.
