Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Narrative of the Fourth Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, Wheeler's Corps, Army of Tennessee The rough board that perhaps a comrade placed at the head to direct the footsteps of inquiring friends has long since rotted down; and the little mound they spread above their soldier breast has been leveled by the plowshare or the long years that have passed since then. But there the wild flower sheds its sweetest perfume to the morning air, and the song bird warbles its lay to the setting sun, and at night the stars of heaven, as they climb the Milky Way, look down and grow brighter as they pass. Book excerpt: Of all the states in the Confederacy, Tennessee was the most sectionally divided. East Tennesseans opposed secession at the ballot box in 1861, petitioned unsuccessfully for separate statehood, resisted the Confederate government, enlisted in Union militias, elected U.S. congressmen, and fled as refugees into Kentucky. These refugees formed Tennessee's first Union cavalry regiments during early 1862, followed shortly thereafter by others organized in Union-occupied Middle and West Tennessee. In Homegrown Yankees, the first book-length study of Union cavalry from a Confederate state, James Alex Baggett tells the remarkable story of Tennessee's loyal mounted regiments. Fourteen mounted regiments that fought primarily within the boundaries of the state and eight local units made up Tennessee's Union cavalry. Young, nonslaveholding farmers who opposed secession, the Confederacy, and the war -- from isolated villages east of Knoxville, the Cumberland Mountains, or the Tennessee River counties in the west -- filled the ranks. Most Tennesseans denounced these local bluecoats as renegades, turncoats, and Tories; accused them of betraying their people, their section, and their race; and held them in greater contempt than soldiers from the North. Though these homegrown Yankees participated in many battles -- including those in the Stones River, Tullahoma, Chickamauga, East Tennessee, Nashville, and Atlanta campaigns -- their story provides rare insights into what occurred between the battles. For them, military action primarily meant almost endless skirmishing with partisans, guerrillas, and bushwackers, as well as with the Rebel raiders of John Hunt Morgan, Joseph Wheeler, and Nathan Bedford Forrest, who frequently recruited and supplied themselves from behind enemy lines. Tennessee's Union cavalry scouted and foraged the countryside, guarded outposts and railroads, acted as couriers, supported the flanks of infantry, and raided the enemy. On occasion, especially during the Nashville campaign, they provided rapid pursuit of Confederate forces. They also helped protect fellow unionists from an aggressive pro-Confederate insurgency after 1862. Baggett vividly describes the deprivation, sickness, and loneliness of cavalrymen living on the war's periphery and traces how circumstances beyond their control -- such as terrain, transport, equipage, weaponry, public sentiment, and military policy -- affected their lives. He also explores their well-earned reputation for plundering -- misdeeds motivated by revenge, resentment, a lack of discipline, and the hard-war policy of the Union army. In the never-before-told story of these cavalrymen, Homegrown Yankees offers new insights into an unexplored facet of southern Unionism and provides an exciting new perspective on the Civil War in Tennessee.

Book excerpt: The history of vital Confederate cavalry regiment This history of a famous and dashing cavalry regiment of the Confederate forces during the American Civil War was authored by a serving officer who became the regiment's adjutant. It concerns Baxter Smith's 4th Tennessee Cavalry as distinct from another-which bore the same number-under Colonel Stearn. Previously published as 'A Brief History' this account paints a vibrant picture of the regiment on campaign and on the battlefield in such detail as only one among its ranks could provide. We join the horsemen of the South at Chickamauga, on Wheelers Raid, in Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, South and North Carolina in several actions. Included within this book is an account of Bragg's Kentucky Campaign by Baxter Smith-the regiment's commander.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hancock's Diary, 1887: Or a History of the Second Tennessee Confederate Cavalry As I wrote, during the war, merely for my own future reference, not then expecting to ever have my Diary published in book form, I omitted many, many items which should have been mentioned; therefore, soon after I began to rewrite the work for publication, I had five hundred letters printed for distribution among my comrades, and besides I have sent out hundreds of manuscript letters to let my comrades know what I was doing and what I wanted them to do. I regret to say that my Diary is not what I wish it to be, from the fact that so few of my comrades gave the desired and asked-for aid. I hope that they will not complain of omissions which they should have furnished. I have endeavored to give a sketch of the movements of the different commands (whether regiment, brigade, division, corps, or army) with which the First Battalion and Second Tennessee Cavalry moved - from General Zollicoffer's first campaign into Kentucky in September and October, 1861, to the last campaign of General Forrest into Central Alabama in March and April, 1865. I highly appreciate the following Indorsement. "To Our Comrades of the Second Tennessee Cavalry, and Others: "We have examined with great interest the manuscript pages of our Brother Hancock's work. It is fraught with a peculiar originality, and is a consecutive story in his own way of stirring scenes of the war that will pass as a panorama before the minds of all who participated in them. Of course there are many things omitted; but whose fault is it? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
