This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the German Language With Five Books of the Nibelungenlied The increasing attention paid in this country to Teutonic Philology requires the publication of some handbook like the present to set forth the rise and progressive development of the German Language. The scholar will not be content with a knowledge of its present condition and capabilities, but will desire to trace back each of its characteristic qualities to its fountain head; and such a task, while satisfying the philologer, opens up a most instructive chapter of history and civilization. To guide and assist the student in prosecuting his researches in this field of literature is the design and object of this little work. The need of it is especially felt in the Royal University of Ireland, which has adopted the subject as a portion of its regular course in Arts, and requires from all students who take up German a competent acquaintance with Teutonic Philology. In the older Universities of the United Kingdom this subject is also claiming much attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the German Language If this volume contributes somewhat to the better knowledge of a language, which, in my opinion, embodies a larger number of excellencies than any other of ancient or modern times, except the Greek, I Shall feel that my labor has not been in vain. I am not unaware that we have a number of American scholars whose attainments in Germanic Philology are much superior to mine, and who are in position to pro duce a better book than this. As they have not, however, thus far undertaken the task, at least so far as the public is informed, I am led to put forth this modest work in the hope that it may, at least, prepare the way for something more excellent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of a History of the German Language It must further be pointed out that before an English reader can peruse it advantageously, he must possess some knowledge of German, otherwise many of the illustrations will be meaningless to him. It is intended, in the first instance, to be useful to teachers, who can fill up and amplify principles which space forbade the authors from illustrating more fully but it is hoped that advanced students may derive some aid from it. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sounds and History of the German Language No apology 18 needed for an attempt to write an intro duction to the Phonetics and History of the German Language that is simple enough to be intelligible to stu dents without linguistic erudition, and at the same time sufficiently comprehensive to meet to a reasonable degree the requirements of the teacher of German. Phonetics and historical grammar have at last come into their own as legitimate and indispensable elements of the training of foreign language teachers, but a text-book for these subjects adjusted to the complicated needs of our colleges has so far been a desideratum. Book The German Language

Download or read book The German Language written by Tobias Diekhoff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Language: Outlines of Its Development Language teachers recognize the injustice and prejudice in such condemnation. At the same time, we cannot close our eyes to the fact that more and more the study Of foreign languages is pursued not for its own inherent value, but for ulterior purposes, however legitimate they may be. I have long had the conviction that for the loss of pres tige suffered by language study during the last twenty years, the profession is not altogether without blame. In trying to meet the popular clamor for practical results, Often enough coming from sources whence it should be least expected, we have allowed our work to grow more or less superficial, giving more attention to a favorable appearance, to entertainment of the learner than to serious study with its sure and lasting reward. The best, if not the only way in which we may rehabilitate ourselves in the esteem of seriously minded students, is by laying surer and deeper foundations for our work. In this book I meant to put my efforts in this direction at the service Of all teachers and students who are interested in gaining an intelligent understanding of linguistic processes as they manifest themselves in the German language.
