Book A Brief History of Rockville Centre

Download or read book A Brief History of Rockville Centre written by Marilyn Nunes Devlin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The village of Rockville Centre is a suburban haven on Long Island. Beginning in the eighteenth century with families like the DeMotts, this small farming community quickly grew. Ship captains left their families here while they sailed, and the arrival of the South Shore Railroad brought the wealthy from New York City. Residents established churches, schools, restaurants, newspapers, hotels and shops. Some of these, like the English Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity and the Fortnightly Womens Club, are still part of Rockville Centres vibrant community. As the village continues to grow, the legacy of its past preserves its tight knit atmosphere. Local author Marilyn Devlin presents Rockville Centres unique history in these pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long Island has one of the most vibrant and largest Jewish communities in the nation. After World War II, hundreds of thousands of Jewish soldiers returned from war looking for a life in the suburbs and synagogues to join, but the demand exceeded the supply. In 1946, Rabbi Elias Solomon called a meeting of Conservative rabbis from Manhattan to map out a plan to build a synagogue at ever South Shore Long Island Railroad stop, from Valley Stream to Patchogue. Central Synagogue of Nassau County and Beth El in Great Neck both grew to more than 1000 families as Reform Judaism took hold, and the growth of the Chabad movement in recent decades as spurred an increase of Orthodox Judaism. Author Ira Poliakoff catalogues the history of synagogues and congregations that have shaped Long Island's past and present.

Book History of Rockville From 1823 to 1871

Download or read book History of Rockville From 1823 to 1871 written by Wm T. Cogswell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Rockville, From 1823 to 1871: Including Also a Brief Sketch of Facts Which Ante-Date the Incorporation of Vernon, and Bring Dates Up to the Time When This History Begins The first chapter was written in an idle hour, while the writer was meditating on the past and present condition of this once barren heath, and now the head center of business for Tolland County. The first number was passed through the Post Office, directed to the journal, Signed, with the initial 0. Contrary to expectation, inquiry was raised to find the author, and demand more of the same sort of Roc. Lle history. The Editor of the journal was consulted whether he would print more than the first number. The answer was, I will print all you'll write. Until I had written up to 1840 I had no expectation of having the articles printed in pamphlet form. From the absence of any record to assist, and often conflicting memories, - and from the death of nearly all who were familiar with the early history and settlement of Rockville, it is probable that events as narrated are somewhat imperfect. Each chapter was written for the last or finale; which, being the case, many repetitions occur in two or three chapters which would not, if I had preserved my manu script either written or printed. The first chapter introduced into this volume is from the pen of Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
