It arose, probably, as a Saxon settlement, many years before the Norman Conquest and first saw the light of day in records as an entry in the Domesday survey of 1087. For centuries it remained a remote and obscure agricultural hamlet. As the medieval period progressed, it acquired and lost great landowners, some of them in dramatic circumstances. William Peverel was probably the mightiest, but there were others, including the Duke of Rutland, Lord Melbourne, and the Earls of Essex. By about 1800, the system of large, open fields, cultivated communally in 'strips', had all but disappeared; the turnpike road of 1763 occupied the valley bottom and transport had started to improve. The age of railways was yet to dawn, but the Nottingham Canal had reached the fringes of the area, and mining had taken its first steps towards operations on an industrial scale. Kimberley had arrived at the beginning of a broad industrial awakening which would change its face forever - the Industrial Revolution. Mining, canals, lace, brick making, religion, beer and railways, all made heavy inroads into the landscape, and all left their social footprints on its history. The population mushroomed, poverty and early death were rife, fortunes were made and lost. Kimberley, despite its small size, acquired two competing railways, two competing railway stations, a famously dangerous tramway, a legendary number of beerhouses, many vociferous churches and two large breweries. This is the paperback version of a booklet which was considerably updated and revised in 2013. It contains a good deal of recent research and additional material. It also includes material previously not covered, notably a brief consideration of Babbington.

Book excerpt: The second book in the epic Ballantyne series Zouga was left alone, as alone in spirit as he had ever been in any of his wanderings across the vast African continent. He had spent almost the last penny he owned on these few square feet of yellow earth at the bottom of this hot and dusty pit. He had no men to help him work it, no experience, no capital.' A tribal battle. An Empire's war. Zouga Ballantyne has in his blood a fanatic's need to find diamonds, one that will take him to Southern Africa's most punishing places. Losing his wife to one of the many sicknesses that haunt the diamond mine camp, Zouga and his sons must find another way through the country, helping to build the British Empire, and developing their own form of civilisation in the face of tribal opposition. But the Ballantyne family success comes at a price -the sacrifice of the local Matabele tribe, who have tried to live alongside the colonists, but are slowly losing everything. In the face of exploitation, violence and greed, who will triumph in the land of ruthless men?

Book War What Is It Good For

Download or read book War What Is It Good For written by Kimberley Phillips Boehm and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2012-01-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans' long campaign for "the right to fight" forced Harry Truman to issue his 1948 executive order calling for equality of treatment and opportunity in the armed forces. In War! What Is It Good For?, Kimberley Phillips examines how blacks' participation in the nation's wars after Truman's order and their protracted struggles for equal citizenship galvanized a vibrant antiwar activism that reshaped their struggles for freedom. Using an array of sources--from newspapers and government documents to literature, music, and film--and tracing the period from World War II to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, Phillips considers how federal policies that desegregated the military also maintained racial, gender, and economic inequalities. Since 1945, the nation's need for military labor, blacks' unequal access to employment, and discriminatory draft policies have forced black men into the military at disproportionate rates. While mainstream civil rights leaders considered the integration of the military to be a civil rights success, many black soldiers, veterans, and antiwar activists perceived war as inimical to their struggles for economic and racial justice and sought to reshape the civil rights movement into an antiwar black freedom movement. Since the Vietnam War, Phillips argues, many African Americans have questioned linking militarism and war to their concepts of citizenship, equality, and freedom.

Arthur Bilt, Brewer and Head Brewer, has toiled for his entire adult life within the labyrinthine decrepitude of the City Brewery in London. For the best part of half a century he has given it his best. The City Brewery used to be independent, but it is now owned by a sprawling hotel and leisure conglomerate with tentacles in every corner of the globe. That in its turn has been swallowed by a teetering, globalised, financial mega structure of epic proportion. Deep in the bowels of the brewery, vengeful, dark forces are at work - a monstrous seeping presence has arrived which threatens to engulf and ruin the entire shambolic imperium. Can Bilt, aided by his clever but industrially challenged assistant, rescue the situation from the brink of Apocalypse? Can they keep their cool against the shadowy forces ranged against them? What are the dark and sinister secrets encoded within Miss Millipond's archive? Can Crasker keep them all employed for long enough to emerge triumphant, or at least reach retirement age? Can senior managers re-apportion blame fast enough to retain their suits? Will Sir Richard's great career ever attain the explosive climax demanded by his soaring ambitions? Bilt decides upon a final assault of desperate proportion but it could all go horribly wrong.
