Download or read book A History of France Classic Reprint written by Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of France It Often happens that those of us who live in great cities do not know our next door neighbors. In the great world it is very much the same and we know little or nothing about our neighbors. Hundreds of years ago a French writer called us his next neighbor. It was impossible, he said, to write about France without also writing about England. That is very true, for during hundreds of years the history of the two countries mixed and mingled. Yet in spite of that Jacques Bonhomme and John Bull have gone on liv ing side by side knowing little of each other's history, understanding little of each other's ways. For during hundreds of years France and England were deadly enemies, and Englishmen cared little about the history of France. They thought that they knew enough about Frenchmen when they knew how to fight them. But those days have long gone past, and now Jacques Bonhomme is not only our next neighbor, but our very good friend. That being so, British boys and girls are no longer con tent to know nothing about this friend, and several years ago I got a letter from a little English boy. I like that book, he said, and I wish you would write one just the same, only about France, because we can't find anything nice about France. Since then I have received many such letters both from British boys and girls and from their cousins in America. I promised them all that some day they should have the book they asked for. They were not very pleased with that promise, I think. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of the French Revolution of 1848 And never was so much work done, and well done, in so brief a space of time. The Three Days Of July, glorious as they were to the great-hearted victors, resulted in nothing more than a transposition of the established order of things; they shifted the parts in the political drama from one set of actors to another, but the play remained the same. The Three Days of February were days both of destruction and creation, and produced a fundamental change in the whole political and social system of the country. Between the ancient France Of Louis Philippe and the new-born Republic there lies the interval of a deluge. Book The French Revolution and Napoleon Classic Reprint

Download or read book The French Revolution and Napoleon Classic Reprint written by Charles Downer Hazen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution and Napoleon NO historian believes that history repeats itself. Yet, between different ages there are frequently striking analogies and resemblances. It is prob lems that repeat themselves, not the conditions which determine their solution. One of these problems, recurrent in European annals, is that of the maintenance of a certain balance of power among the various nations as essential to their freedom, the maintenance of a situation to which they are accustomed and which-they have found tolerable, a change in which would be prejudicial or dangerous to their peace and safety. Several times in modern history this balance has been threatened and Europe has purchased immunity from servitude by freely giving its life blood that life might remain and might be worth living. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 924 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 1 of 4 It is to be regretted that an author so well versed in the annals of his country as M. Thiers, has not thought it worth his while to enter more into detail on the subject of the numerous secondary causes which helped to bring about the French Revolution. It will be observed that, after a few brief introductory paragraphs, of a didactic rather than an historical character, he comes at once to his subject, as if he took for granted that all his readers were as well acquainted as himself with the remote, as well as with the immediate, origin of that memorable event His history may be said to commence with the derangement of the national finances after the death of Maurepas; but the seeds of the revolution were sown long before his time. The immediately pro pelling cause was no doubt financial, but the struggle had become ne cessary - it may almost be said from the day of the decease (if the Grand Monarque. Download or read book A Short History of French Literature Classic Reprint written by George Saintsbury and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of French Literature The fourth edition of this book (1892) was printed from third, with corrections, not inconsiderable in number, if individu ally of no great significance; but in view of a possible further demand it seemed, for more reasons than one, desirable to recast the book materially for the next issue. In the first place, the appearance, also at the Clarendon Press, of Mr. Toynbee's Specimens q/ 01d Franck, gave me an Opportunity of omitting the illustrative extracts in the first part of the present volume, and so gaining a substantial amount of space. These extracts had originally been included by me not so much out of predilection for them, as because, in the absence of any book in which English readers were presented with anything of the kind, they seemed indispensable. But they were something of an anomaly; and I took the first Opportunity of suggesting to the Delegates of the Clarendon Press that, as the need was now elsewhere and better supplied, my own makeshift had better go. I am much obliged to them for the promptitude with which they at once met my wishes as to recasting the book.
